About this book:
Everything We Left in Darkness

Nora Blake returns to her hometown of Ashburn following the suspicious death of her sister, Emma. While the authorities and her mother, Margaret, label the death a tragic accident involving prescription pills, Nora’s journalistic instincts uncover a trail of burned documents and coded messages. She discovers that Emma was conducting a dangerous investigation into a 1998 industrial accident at the local mill, an event that helped consolidate the power of the current Mayor, Richard Calloway.

Nora unearths a web of corruption involving the Mayor, the town doctor, and a silent enforcer. She learns that the mill explosion was not an accident but criminal negligence, and that the doctor murdered a key witness in the hospital to protect the Calloway family. Emma’s investigation reveals that their own family was directly impacted; Nora’s aunt Clara was forced into exile after her husband, the mill foreman, was killed. Most shockingly, Nora discovers that the Mayor’s son, Henry—who was Emma’s secret lover—is actually Clara’s biological son, hidden away to ensure the family's silence.

As the Calloway machine attempts to silence Nora through a brutal smear campaign and physical intimidation, Nora utilizes Emma’s meticulously planned "dead man’s switch" to broadcast a recorded confession of the Mayor’s crimes to the entire town. This public unmasking breaks the decades-long cycle of fear and leads to the arrest of the town's elite. In a final act of justice, Nora thwarts the Mayor’s attempt to flee the country by deciphering Emma’s ultimate "map" to his escape plan.

In the aftermath, the town of Ashburn begins a painful process of reconciliation. Clara is reunited with her son and her sister, while the true story of the 1998 tragedy is finally documented. Having fulfilled Emma’s mission to bring the truth into the light, Nora decides to remain in Ashburn to help rebuild the community’s integrity, transforming her sister's tragic sacrifice into a lasting legacy of honesty.
