About this book:

The Vanishing Code In a quiet university archive, forensic linguist Lena Archer stumbles upon a baffling pattern: a subtle typographic marker—a thin dash, a double space, and the initials "PV"—reappears across decades of obituaries in the same local newspaper. When she investigates, she finds the digital records have been altered, replacing local funeral homes with a corporate firm called Pinnacle Services. This chilling discovery, which disproportionately affects those with no immediate family, leads her to believe a conspiracy is systematically erasing people from history.

Her investigation connects her with Marcus Hale, an investigative journalist already tracking Pinnacle, a data aggregation firm that buys public records contracts. Together, they uncover that Pinnacle is not just standardizing data, but actively altering it as part of a clandestine program. After a break-in at a data center confirms their suspicions, they are targeted by unseen forces and learn that Lena’s own name has been flagged for erasure.

Fleeing their pursuers, Lena and Marcus are contacted by Dr. Tomas Vitale, a reclusive historian and one of the original architects of the program, now known as "Project Vanishing." Vitale reveals that the program, initially a tool for historical curation, was weaponized for control and has been operating for decades. He provides them with a physical ledger from a secret monastery, which contains the names of the program's first victims and serves as a key to its history.

As Kade’s forces close in, Lena discovers the true purpose of the typographic markers: they are a complex code, embedding hidden data like coordinates within the kerning of the text. After a harrowing escape, they learn the program's source code—a "master key" that could destroy it—is stored on a physical CD, not a network. They retrieve it from a hidden vault in Boston, but are cornered by Kade. Using a manual fire suppression system, Lena creates a diversion, allowing her to access the program's core at the data center. Just as she is about to be captured by Kade, she executes the kill switch, typing Kade’s own name as the authorization. The entire global network goes dark.

In the aftermath, Kade is arrested, but the physical record of Project Vanishing still exists. Vitale’s true final ledger, the original list of erased names, is discovered in a small, forgotten local archive. Lena chooses to leave the world of academia behind. Instead, she dedicates herself to the painstaking work of restoration, using her skills to research the lives that were stolen and write new, true obituaries, returning one name at a time to the light.
