The Lighthouse Keeper's Last Signal
MTA
A Coastal Mystery of Lost Secrets and Dangerous Lies
2nd Edition
Claire Avery, an investigative journalist, returns to her isolated hometown of Gull’s Head Point to bury her father, Henry, a meticulous lighthouse keeper who reportedly died in an accidental fall. Her suspicion is immediately aroused by the fact that the lighthouse beacon was mysteriously dark the night he died. Upon discovering a singed logbook page and hearing a coded digital signal broadcasting from the tower at midnight, Claire teams up with her childhood friend Jonah, a fisheries officer, and Sam, a tech-savvy teenager, to uncover the truth behind her father’s death and the town’s growing wall of silence.
The investigation reveals that Henry was part of a decades-old "Agreement" with the corrupt Mayor Evelyn Kitteridge and wealthy developer Marcus Hale. They used the lighthouse as a secret relay station for a clandestine surveillance network built into the wreckage of the *Osprey*, a ship intentionally scuttled years earlier. Claire discovers that her mother, who she believed had abandoned her, was actually a covert federal operative forced into hiding to protect her family. As the trio unearths the conspiracy, they are hunted by Hale’s enforcers, leading to a series of violent confrontations along the treacherous Maine cliffs.
In a climactic struggle at the lighthouse, Evelyn murders Hale to silence him and attempts to frame Claire’s mother for the conspiracy. However, Claire discovers her father’s ultimate redundancy: a hidden analog recording of the night the *Osprey* sank, proving Evelyn's direct role in the maritime murders. Though Evelyn sets the lighthouse ablaze to destroy the evidence, Claire successfully broadcasts the truth to the world via an emergency frequency.
In the aftermath, the federal government dismantles the criminal network, and Evelyn dies attempting to flee. While the physical lighthouse is destroyed, Claire’s family name is cleared. Reunited with her mother and having exposed the rot within Gull’s Head, Claire decides to stay in the community to document its recovery, finally embracing her legacy as the keeper of the town’s truth.
