Humana began in 1961 when lawyers David A. Jones Sr. and Wendell Cherry founded a nursing home company in Louisville, Kentucky. Early success in the nursing home sector, fueled by the introduction of Medicare and Medicaid, allowed the firmâfirst as Extendicare and later as Humanaâto become the nationâs largest nursing home operator by 1968. Recognizing changing market dynamics, the company shifted its focus to hospitals, acquiring numerous facilities and eventually purchasing American Medicorp in 1978 to become the largest hospital company in the world. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Humana navigated regulatory challenges, embraced operational innovations like the doubleâcorridor hospital design, and began to feel pressure from rising costs and the emergence of managed care.
In response to a lost HMO contract in 1983, Humana launched its own health insurance division, Humana Health Care Plans, aiming to vertically integrate hospital services with insurance. After an initial period of underpriced premiums and financial losses, the health plan division turned profitable by 1989. The 1990s saw Humana fully embrace managed care, culminating in the 1993 spinâoff of its hospital business into Galen Health Care, allowing the company to concentrate exclusively on health benefits. Through a series of strategic acquisitionsâsuch as Physician Corporation of America, ChoiceCare, and later Medicare Advantage plans like Arcadian Management ServicesâHumana expanded its membership base and geographic reach, while divesting nonâcore assets to sharpen its focus on insurance and managed care.
Entering the 21st century, Humana capitalized on the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 to become a leader in Medicare Advantage, offering comprehensive benefits that included dental, vision, fitness, and homeâbased care. The acquisition of Kindred at Home in 2021 gave Humana a major foothold in direct, inâhome services, reinforcing its shift toward valueâbased care, preventive health, and the integration of social determinants of health. The company invested heavily in technology, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and digital member engagement to personalize care, improve outcomes, and support valueâbased partnerships with providers. Humana also weathered economic downturns, healthcare reforms such as the Affordable Care Act, and public health crises like COVIDâ19 by leveraging its diversified portfolio, disciplined financial management, and commitment to community engagement and social responsibility.
Today, as an S&P 500 company, Humanaâs legacy is defined by its pioneering role in managed care, its dominance in the Medicare Advantage market, its push toward homeâbased and integrated care delivery, and its dataâdriven, patientâcentered approach. Leadership across decadesâfrom founders Jones and Cherry to executives Michael B. McCallister and Bruce Broussardâhas continually adapted the firmâs strategy to evolving market, regulatory, and technological landscapes. Looking forward, Humana envisions a future of highly personalized, proactive, and coordinated health management, empowered by AI, expanded home and communityâbased services, and relentless focus on health equity, valueâbased care, and innovative partnerships that extend health into membersâ everyday lives.
This book is ideal for business historians, healthcare executives, investors, and students of corporate strategy who want to understand how a company transformed from a regional nursing home operator into an S&P 500 health and wellâbeing leader. It also appeals to readers interested in the evolution of American healthcare, managed care, Medicare Advantage, and the role of technology and leadership in sustaining longâterm growth. Professionals seeking insights into strategic pivots, regulatory navigation, and valueâbased care will find valuable lessons throughout Humanaâs sixâdecade journey.
