In the basement of Wonder-Tone Pictures, Arthur Pendelton draws the frames no one is meant to see. It’s 1941, and as an inbetweener, his job is to fill the gaps between star animator Julian Vance’s keyframes—drawings 2, 3, and 4—until the illusion of motion is seamless. If he does his job perfectly, the audience never knows he exists.
But when Arthur finds microscopic text buried beneath Vance’s graphite—shifting coordinates, a hidden sequence, and the hyper-realistic image of a man in a dark overcoat reaching out from a bank window—he realizes the studio is concealing something far more dangerous than wartime secrets. Between Frame 1 and Frame 5 lies a message etched in pencil lead and nitrate film, meant only for the spaces between seconds.
At twenty-four frames per second, reality flickers. Now Arthur must finish the in-betweens before the camera rolls, knowing that every line he draws could expose a hidden world—or pull him into it.
