London, 1882. The London Necropolis Railway runs one way only: twenty-five miles from Waterloo to Brookwood Cemetery, carrying the city's dead in mahogany and pine, segregated by class even in the grave. Arthur Pym has spent three years hauling coffins onto the funeral train, inured to the smell of sawdust, carbolic, and coal smoke—until the night he feels a dead woman's coffin shift, and hears something that sounds impossibly like a fingernail dragging against silk.
When a second aristocratic corpse arrives sealed in rosewood with screws turned in haste, Arthur's veteran partner Silas warns him off: porters carry, they don't question. But the thump from inside the casket as it locks into the hearse-van isn't settling gas. It's weight moving. As *The Charon* pulls out into the yellow fog, Arthur makes a choice that will cost him his livelihood—and perhaps his life—boarding the next train to Surrey to exhume a secret the Mayfair elite buried with their daughter.
Atmospheric, claustrophobic, and steeped in Victorian dread, *The London Necropolis Railway* descends into the tunnels beneath London's Undertaking, where the dead don't always stay buried, and the living will kill to keep them there.
