The Lady and the Lhasa
Alexandra David-Néel's Forbidden Journey to Tibet

About this book:

In 1924, the "Forbidden City" of Lhasa remained the ultimate prize for explorers—a place where trespass meant death and the Himalayas themselves seemed determined to keep the world out. Into this crucible stepped Alexandra David-Néel: a Buddhist scholar, anarchist, former opera singer, and a woman who refused to be confined by the expectations of her era. Disguised as a beggar pilgrim, her face blackened with soot and yak butter, she embarked on a perilous, months-long trek through frozen passes and bandit territory, armed only with an indomitable will and a young lama named Yongden.

"The Lady and the Lhasa" plunges you into the heart of one of history’s most audacious adventures. Experience the visceral danger of crossing the Tang La in a blizzard, the tension of bluffing through military checkpoints, and the profound intimacy of a friendship forged in the shadow of the Potala Palace. This is not merely a tale of geographical conquest, but a pilgrimage of the spirit, offering a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the vanished world of old Tibet—its hidden monasteries, vibrant rituals, and the deep spirituality that sustained a civilization on the roof of the world.

More than a travelogue, this is the story of a polymath who shattered every boundary placed before her. From the salons of Paris to the frozen silence of the Tibetan plateau, Alexandra David-Néel charted a path defined by intellectual courage and spiritual hunger. Her forbidden journey didn't just put Lhasa on the map; it revealed the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit. Prepare to be transported to a realm of breathtaking beauty and mortal peril, where one woman's impossible dream became an enduring legend.
