A History of Duke Energy
MTA
The Story of a Global Company
Duke Energy traces its roots to the fragmented electric utilities of the Carolinas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where James B. Duke leveraged his tobacco fortune to consolidate hydroelectric potential along the Catawba River. The formal creation of Duke Power Company in 1917 unified generation, transmission, and distribution, enabling rapid electrification that powered the regionâs textile boom and rural communities. Through the 1920s and 1930s, the company expanded with steamâelectric plants and weathered the Great Depression by maintaining infrastructure and supporting customers, then proved vital to the World War II effort as wartime industry surged demand for electricity.
The postâwar boom triggered massive growth in residential and industrial load, prompting Duke Power to add coalâfired steam stations, further extend its grid, and begin diversifying into nuclear power. Starting with the experimental Parr reactor in the early 1960s, the company built three major nuclear stationsâOconee, McGuire, and Catawbaâproviding substantial carbonâfree baseload capacity. Concurrently, rising environmental awareness brought regulations such as NEPA and the Clean Air Act, prompting investments in pollution controls and sparking a broader reckoning with ecological impacts. In the 1980s and 1990s, PURPA and deregulation nudged Duke Power toward independent power production, natural gas ventures, and the transformative 1997 merger with PanEnergy, which created Duke Energy Corporation and launched a sustained period of domestic and international mergers and acquisitions.
International expansion initially focused on Latin America, where Duke Energy acquired hydroelectric and thermal assets in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, navigating political volatility, currency risk, regulatory heterogeneity, and complex cultural and logistical challenges. The company built a global footprint while confronting crises such as the 2014 Dan River coal ash spill and weatherârelated outages, refining its emergency response, cybersecurity, and environmental remediation practices. Throughout, Duke Energy emphasized workforce evolution, safety, diversity, and corporate social responsibility, embedding ethical governance, community engagement, and transparent sustainability reporting into its worldwide operations.
Today, Duke Energy operates a regulated utility core serving millions across six states while aggressively pivoting to a lowâcarbon future: retiring older coal plants, expanding utilityâscale wind and solar, deploying battery storage, advancing smartâgrid technologies, and exploring hydrogen, small modular reactors, and carbon capture. Its strategy balances reliability and affordability with an ambitious netâzeroâŻbyâŻ2050 goal, guided by ongoing policy advocacy, technological innovation, and a disciplined financial approach that leverages its stable regulated earnings to fund growth in clean energy and grid modernization. The companyâs vision centers on a resilient, intelligent grid, expanded renewable integration, and continued global engagement focused on valueâcreating, riskâmanaged investments.
This book is ideal for business students, energy sector professionals, and corporate strategists seeking to understand how a major utility evolved from a regional provider to a global leader. It will particularly benefit readers interested in corporate history, strategic decision-making in regulated industries, and the energy transition. Investors analyzing long-term corporate performance and sustainability professionals studying ESG evolution in large corporations will also find valuable insights. Additionally, anyone fascinated by American industrial history or the technological transformation of infrastructure will appreciate this comprehensive account.
