A History of SAP
MTA
The Story of a Global Company
SAP originated in 1972 when five IBM engineers left to found the company in Walldorf, Germany, driven by a vision for real-time, integrated business applications. Their early work focused on overcoming batch processing limitations, leading to the development of the RF financial module and eventually the R/2 system, which dominated mainframe enterprise computing throughout the 1970s and 1980s by offering comprehensive, standardized software that integrated finance, logistics, and production processes in real time. This era established SAP’s core principles of technical excellence, customer focus, and configurability, enabling rapid growth and a strong foothold in German industry before expanding internationally.
The 1990s brought the client-server revolution with R/3, which rearchitected SAP’s suite for graphical interfaces and distributed computing, solidifying its leadership amid fierce competition from Oracle, PeopleSoft, and others. SAP pursued global expansion through localized subsidiaries and partnerships, adapting its software for diverse markets while maintaining a unified core. The late 1990s internet boom prompted SAP’s e-business strategy via mySAP.com, extending ERP capabilities to CRM, SCM, and SRM. The 2000s saw a major acquisition spree, notably the purchase of Business Objects, which bolstered SAP’s analytics and BI offerings, followed by cloud-focused purchases of SuccessFactors, Ariba, and Concur, marking SAP’s entry into the SaaS market and beginning a fundamental shift in its business model.
Building on in-memory innovation with HANA—launched in 2010—SAP introduced S/4HANA as a simplified, intelligent core ERP that combined transactional and analytical processing on a single platform, accompanied by the Fiori user experience to improve usability. Continued expansion included industry-specific solutions, a vast partner ecosystem, and strategic moves into AI and ML, highlighted by the Qualtrics acquisition to merge operational and experience data. SAP also deepened its commitment to social responsibility and sustainability, targeting net-zero emissions by 2030 and leveraging its technology to enable customer sustainability. Today, SAP serves over 400,000 customers globally, leads in cloud ERP with S/4HANA Cloud, invests heavily in AI through its Business AI unit and Sapphire Ventures, and positions itself as the platform for the Intelligent Enterprise, continuously evolving amid competition from hyperscalers and niche cloud vendors while maintaining a legacy of innovation that has shaped modern business operations for over five decades.
This book is ideal for IT professionals, enterprise architects, business leaders, and SAP consultants who want to understand the technological and strategic evolution of one of the world’s largest enterprise software companies. It also serves students and scholars of technology history seeking a detailed case study of innovation, global expansion, and corporate culture in the software industry. Executives navigating digital transformation will find valuable insights into how SAP’s past decisions shape its current cloud, AI, and sustainability roadmap.
