Summer in Charlotte MTA
A Love Story

About this book:

Clara, a meticulous architect from Boston, relocates to Charlotte for the summer, seeking to escape the stagnation of her life and find new inspiration. Staying with her sister Sarah, she explores the city’s diverse neighborhoods—from the artsy NoDa district to the historic Duke Mansion and the revitalized South End—discovering a blend of old and new that contrasts sharply with her structured, career-driven past. Through each chapter, Clara’s architectural sensibilities are awakened as she encounters Charlotte’s vibrant landscapes, community spaces, and adaptive reuse projects, which profoundly influence her vision for a historic mill renovation in South End. Her journey is marked by spontaneous purchases, deepened relationships, and a gradual shedding of her Boston persona, revealing a more open, creative, and connected version of herself.

Her professional aspirations intertwine with personal growth as she meets Julian, a landscape designer whose passion for nature and design complements her own. Their connection deepens through shared explorations of Charlotte’s hidden gems, from Freedom Park’s serene gardens to the Music Factory’s industrial charm and the tranquil Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. Their dates—ranging from a rooftop dinner in Uptown to a midnight stroll on Tryon Street—culminate in a proposal under the stars, solidifying their bond. Meanwhile, Clara’s growing confidence leads to a successful presentation of her South End mill design to developer Mark, who embraces her vision of integrating green spaces and community-focused architecture, securing her professional future in the city.

Sarah’s unwavering support and Charlotte’s warm, community-driven ethos catalyze Clara’s transformation, helping her heal from the loneliness and creative stagnation of her past. The city becomes a metaphor for renewal, with its humidity, thunderstorms, and golden-hour light symbolizing the organic, resilient foundation Clara builds for her life. By summer’s end, Clara is no longer the isolated Boston architect but a vibrant, integrated member of Charlotte’s fabric, in love with both the city and Julian, ready to commit to her new life. The narrative closes with their engagement, set against a panoramic Charlotte skyline, underscoring themes of home, belonging, and the magic of unexpected connections. Through Clara’s journey, the book celebrates the power of place, love, and the courage to embrace change, culminating in a heartfelt affirmation of the Queen City’s transformative charm.
