About this book:

The Silk Road Widow After the death of her husband, Kamran, a prominent merchant of Samarkand, Soraya inherits a legacy of heavy debt and a fractured caravan. Defying cultural expectations and the predatory schemes of her husband’s cousin, Bahram, she assumes control of the household's trade. Armed with Kamran’s ledger and a bone *paizi* (passport) recovered from his grave, she leads a diminished caravan across the treacherous Silk Road to settle outstanding obligations and restore her family’s solvency. Her journey takes her through major hubs like Bukhara, Merv, and Kashgar, where she must navigate volatile markets, steep imperial tolls, and shifting alliances with dyers, salt lords, and steppe nomads.

The journey serves as a baptism by fire as Soraya faces environmental perils—including sandstorms in the Dasht-e Kavir and a blizzard in the Pamir Mountains—alongside human threats such as Uyghur raiders and Mongol military scrutiny. Throughout the expedition, Soraya uncovers a shadow network of intelligence operated by regional keepers and rival trading houses like Suyur-Khodja. The discovery of a "secret ledger" reveals that Kamran was part of a deep-rooted information exchange and that Bahram’s accusations of insolvency were part of a coordinated effort to sabotage the house of Razi for private gain.

The climax occurs in the imperial capital of Karakorum, where Soraya stands before the Darughachi’s court to defend her estate. By presenting a meticulously kept chronicle of her journey and using the sensitive information in the secret ledger as strategic leverage, she exposes the corruption of her accusers and the infiltration of the imperial relay system. Exonerated and her debts fully settled through shrewd trading in indigo and silk, Soraya returns to Samarkand not as a grieving widow, but as a respected merchant in her own right. The story concludes with her preparing a new caravan, signaling her permanent claim to a place among the elite traders of the Silk Road.
