About this book:

The Scribe's Secret In "The Scribe's Secret," Aelis, a novice scribe at the isolated Abbey of Saint-Hilaire-en-Marais, uncovers a deep-seated conspiracy woven into the very fabric of the monastery's most revered manuscript: an unfinished gospel. Initially drawn to the text by its unusual script and anachronistic elements, Aelis meticulously applies her paleographic skills, discovering that the gospel is a forgery. Her investigation reveals hidden marginal notes and coded messages left by earlier scribes and illuminators, hinting at a truth suppressed for centuries.

Aelis learns that the forged gospel was commissioned by the powerful Châtellerault family in the 12th century to legitimize a fraudulent claim to the lucrative Saltwater Marshes, a key source of their wealth. Her inquiries expose the disappearance of the original scribe, Anselmus, and the illuminator, Giles, both of whom seemingly vanished after working on the contentious manuscript. Further evidence, painstakingly unearthed from forgotten archives and the monastery's cellar by Aelis and Sister Brigid, a pragmatic nun, along with the astute observations of Brother Odo, the abbey's lay brother and record-keeper, reveals a confession from the original Lord Hugo de Châtellerault, admitting to the fraud.

The conspiracy escalates when the current Lady Marguerite de Châtellerault, alerted to the abbey's discoveries, aggressively demands the return of the documents and eventually orders the burning of the abbey's library to destroy all evidence. However, Aelis, aided by Brother Anselm (who reveals himself to be Anselmus, the original forger living under a new identity, now seeking redemption), Brother Odo, and Sister Brigid, manages to save crucial evidence, including the original royal grant of 743 that proves the abbey's rightful ownership of the lands, and the exemplar text from which the false gospel was copied.

The climax sees Aelis, along with Abbot Radulf, Anselmus, and Odo, presenting their irrefutable case before the Bishop’s court. Anselmus confesses his role in the forgery, and Aelis’s paleographic expertise dismantles the Châtellerault’s claims. The Bishop, compelled by the overwhelming evidence, rules in favor of the abbey, restoring its rightful lands and exposing the centuries-old deception. The book concludes with Aelis, now appointed the abbey's archivist, embarking on the task of meticulously cataloguing the monastery's collection, ensuring that truth, meticulously documented and carefully preserved, will endure.
