The Smoking Mirror of John Dee
From Aztec Ritual to Elizabethan Magic

About this book:

A polished disc of black obsidian sits in the British Museum, silent and dark—yet its surface holds the turbulent reflections of two empires. *The Smoking Mirror of John Dee* traces the extraordinary biography of this single artifact from its volcanic birth in Mesoamerica to the candlelit chambers of Elizabethan London, where the queen’s own astrologer, John Dee, and his enigmatic scryer Edward Kelley used it to breach the veil between worlds. Here, Aztec priests once gazed into the smoking mirror of Tezacatlipoca, Lord of the Smoking Mirror, to divine the will of gods; centuries later, Dee sought the language of angels, risking accusations of necromancy to unlock the architecture of the cosmos.

Spanning continents and centuries, this is a story of collision and transformation: the conquistador’s plunder becomes the magus’s portal; a sacred instrument of fate becomes a curio of the Enlightenment. Meticulously researched and vividly told, the narrative moves from the metaphysics of Tenochtitlan to the perilous politics of the Tudor court, revealing how a shard of volcanic glass became the pivot point for Renaissance magic, imperial ambition, and the enduring human obsession with seeing the unseen.

By the final page, the mirror rests in its vitrine—but the questions it raises remain startlingly alive. What happens when cultures project their deepest desires onto the same mysterious object? Where does science end and sorcery begin? *The Smoking Mirror of John Dee* is a spellbinding journey through the shadow history of the West, inviting you to look into the obsidian and discover what stares back.
