The path to the garden winds through a stand of coconut palms, their fronds clicking in the wind. Beyond them, the land rises in green tiers: jackfruit trees heavy with spiked fruit, a middle canopy of mangosteen and avocado, then a tangle of pepper vines climbing trunks like living ropes. At ground level, turmeric and ginger push through mulch while gotukola creeps between stones. No straight rows, no bare earth. Every vertical inch produces something β food, medicine, timber, spice β and the system has run this way for generations.
A Design Older Than the Word Permaculture
In the mid-country wetlands around Kandy, homegardens known as Kandyan Forest Gardens have persisted for at least two thousand years. Archaeological and textual evidence suggests the practice began with early Sinhalese settlements, evolving alongside the island's ancient tank irrigation civilization. By the time the Kandyan Kingdom resisted Portuguese and Dutch incursions in the 16th and 17th centuries, these gardens were already mature, feeding populations through sieges and seasonal shortages.
Each garden typically occupies half a hectare or less, yet hosts over a hundred species. The structure mimics a natural rainforest: emergent timber trees such as hora and keena pierce the canopy at forty metres; below them, coconut, jackfruit, and mango form a productive roof; the mid-layer holds banana, papaya, and clove; the understory shelters coffee, cardamom, and nutmeg; the forest floor yields taro, yams, and leafy greens. Pepper vines stitch the layers together, scaling trunks to reach light. Nothing is monocropped. Nothing is wasted.
Stacking Functions in a Single Plot
What makes the system extraordinary is not just diversity but multiplicity. A single gliricidia tree fixes nitrogen, provides mulch when lopped, shades young cinnamon, and feeds goats. Coconut palms yield nuts, toddy, thatch, coir, and timber while their open crowns let light filter to shade-tolerant taro below. Jackfruit offers carbohydrate-rich fruit, durable hardwood, and a microclimate for pepper. Even weeds are managed: mukunuwenna and gotukola, both nutritious greens, are encouraged as living groundcover that suppresses less useful volunteers.
Families rarely buy fertiliser or pesticide. Leaf litter, animal manure, and kitchen waste cycle through compost pits. Pest control emerges from complexity β birds, lizards, and predatory insects keep outbreaks in check. During the 1980s, when synthetic inputs were heavily subsidised, many farmers experimented with chemical regimens. Yields rose briefly, then collapsed as soil biology died and pest resistance spiked. Those who reverted to traditional management recovered faster.
Knowledge Carried in Hands, Not Manuals
Design decisions are not drawn on paper. They are negotiated at the garden's edge, where an elder points to a gap in the canopy and names the species that will thrive there: "Plant nutmeg here; the mango's shade will hold until it fruits." Seed selection is equally precise. Families maintain their own lines of jackfruit, selecting for early bearing, low latex, or particular flesh texture. Cinnamon peelers β a hereditary caste β judge shoot maturity by the colour of the bark and the snap of the stem, skills no textbook captures.
This knowledge survived colonial plantation economies that replaced diverse gardens with tea and rubber monocultures. It survived the Green Revolution's push for high-yielding rice varieties. It survives now because it works. A 2018 survey of two hundred Kandyan gardens found average household food self-sufficiency at seventy percent, with cash income from surplus spices and fruit covering most non-food needs. Soil organic carbon in these plots measured two to three times higher than adjacent tea estates.
Pressure at the Margins
Yet the gardens are shrinking. Land fragmentation β inheritance splitting plots among sons β has reduced average size below the threshold where the full canopy structure functions. Younger family members migrate to Colombo or the Middle East, leaving aging parents to manage alone. Tea smallholdings, backed by government extension and guaranteed prices, encroach on garden margins. Climate shifts bring longer dry spells that stress even deep-rooted perennials.
Some communities respond by formalising knowledge transfer. In the village of Doluwa, a farmers' collective runs a nursery supplying grafted fruit trees and cinnamon seedlings selected from the best mother plants. They host school visits where children learn to identify fifty useful species before age twelve. The Forest Department, once focused only on timber reserves, now recognises Kandyan gardens as "agro-biodiversity heritage sites" and offers technical support for boundary demarcation and organic certification.
On a misty morning above the Mahaweli River, a gardener named Bandara cuts a ripe jackfruit, its aroma sweet and heavy. He splits the bulb, offers a segment, and wipes latex from his knife on a gliricidia leaf. "My grandfather planted the mango," he says. "I planted the avocado. My son will decide what comes next." The garden does not belong to any single generation. It is a covenant between the living, the dead, and the unborn β rooted in the same red-yellow podzolic soil that has fed this ridge for millennia.
