The Underground Nursery
In a quiet corner of a garden, a half-dozen oak logs stand upright like buried standing stones, their tops flush with the soil. To a passerby it looks like a rustic sculpture, perhaps a modern art installation. In reality, it is a nursery for one of the most spectacular insects in the temperate world: the stag beetle. The practice, known as a stumpery, exploits a simple ecological truth β the larvae of this giant beetle require deep, decaying broadleaved wood to survive their long development, and they cannot find it in tidy, cleared landscapes.
A Beetle's Long Childhood
The stag beetle spends the vast majority of its life out of sight. After mating, the female seeks out rotting broadleaved wood β ideally oak β and lays her eggs deep in the decaying heartwood. The larvae that hatch are fat, C-shaped grubs with powerful mandibles. They will tunnel through the wet, fungus-softened wood for several years, growing slowly on a diet of cellulose and microbes. Only after this prolonged subterranean adolescence do they pupate and emerge as the imposing, antler-mandibled adults that live for just a few weeks in summer.
This extended larval stage makes the species acutely vulnerable to habitat loss. In many regions, the removal of dead and dying trees for safety or aesthetics has stripped the landscape of the only substrate the larvae can use. A stumpery addresses this directly by creating an artificial, concentrated supply of the exact resource they need: vertical logs of broadleaved wood, partially buried to maintain the cool, damp, stable conditions that mimic a natural fallen trunk sinking into the forest floor.
Building the Stumpery
The construction is straightforward but precise. A hole roughly fifty centimeters deep β about twenty inches, or the length of a forearm β is dug. Logs, preferably oak or other broadleaved species, are stood upright in the hole, side by side, with gaps between them. The excavated soil is then backfilled around the logs, firming them in place. The tops of the logs remain exposed at ground level, while the lower halves sit in the dark, moisture-retentive earth.
Variation in log diameter and length adds structural complexity, creating a range of microhabitats within the cluster. For stability, the largest logs go at the bottom. As the wood slowly decays, fungal mycelium spreads through the grain, softening it for the jaws of future larvae. The buried portion stays wet even in drought, a critical buffer against the desiccation that kills many grubs in shallow logs. Above ground, the cut ends weather to a silvery grey, supporting mosses, lichens, and a different suite of invertebrates that prefer drier, aerated wood. Filling some of the gaps with dry leaves makes the interior even more inviting for overwintering creatures.
A Multi-Tenant Building
While the stag beetle is the flagship beneficiary, a stumpery functions as a multi-tenant building. The decaying wood feeds woodlice, centipedes, millipedes, and the larvae of countless other beetles and flies. These invertebrates become a vital food source for larger wildlife: hedgehogs, toads, mice, and birds such as robins, blackbirds, and wrens forage among the logs for the insects they harbor. Amphibians shelter in the damp crevices at the base during the day. If some logs are placed in a sunny spot rather than shade, the drier wood attracts solitary bees and wasps that burrow into old beetle holes or harvest wood fibers for their nests. The stumpery thus anchors a small but complete food web, all powered by the slow release of energy stored in the lignin and cellulose of the buried timber.
Sourcing the Wood
The logs must be broadleaved β conifers lack the right decay ecology for stag beetles β and they should never be taken from established wild areas. Removing dead wood from ancient woodlands or hedgerows simply shifts the habitat deficit elsewhere. The ethical gardener uses logs from tree surgery on their own property, from neighbors' pruning, or from municipal green waste. This constraint turns the stumpery into a hyper-local project: the wood comes from the neighborhood, stays in the neighborhood, and feeds the neighborhood's wildlife.
The Long View
For the gardener, the reward is deferred and largely invisible. There is no bloom to admire, no immediate flurry of wings. The success of a stumpery is measured in years, revealed only when a male stag beetle crashes into a porch light on a June night, or when a grub is accidentally uncovered during a later planting. It is an act of faith in the slow rhythms of decomposition and regeneration. By burying a few logs, the gardener inserts a missing piece into the local ecosystem β a piece that may outlast their own tenure of the land, feeding generations of beetles they will never see.
