The headlamps cut cones of white through the February darkness. On the frozen surface of Lake Saimaa, a line of figures moves slowly across the ice, shovels in hand, pulling sleds loaded with snow. They are not clearing a path. They are building one — a maternity ward for an animal that exists nowhere else on Earth.
The Saimaa ringed seal, Pusa hispida saimensis, numbers roughly 500 individuals. Isolated in this Finnish lake system since the last Ice Age, when rising land cut off their ancestors from the Baltic Sea, the seals have adapted to fresh water with larger eyes and sensitive whiskers for hunting in murky depths. But they cannot adapt fast enough to winters that no longer bring enough snow.
A Species on the Edge
By late February, pregnant females need deep snowdrifts along the shorelines of small islands. They excavate lairs inside these drifts — subnivean chambers accessed through a breathing hole in the ice — where they give birth to a single pup. The snow roof insulates the newborn against temperatures that can drop to -30°C and hides it from predators. Without sufficient snow, the lairs collapse or never form. Pups freeze or are taken by foxes and birds of prey.
Milder winters have become the norm. In southern and western Finland, the number of snow-covered days could halve within a century; average snow mass may shrink by 80 to 90 percent. For the Saimaa ringed seal, already listed as endangered, the loss of nesting habitat is existential.
An Improvisation Becomes a Lifeline
The idea of building artificial snowdrifts began as a desperate experiment. Researchers and volunteers from WWF Finland, Metsähallitus (the state forest enterprise), and the University of Eastern Finland started piling snow on the ice in key breeding areas. They used snow pushers and shovels, compacting drifts to mimic the natural wind-formed banks that seals prefer.
Each drift must be large enough — at least a meter high and several meters wide — to hold a lair that won't collapse. The work is done in January and February, before the females arrive to scout sites. Volunteers often operate in darkness, guided by GPS coordinates of traditional pupping areas. The snow is sourced from the lake surface itself or hauled from shore.
It is grueling, cold labor. A single drift can take an hour to build. In a season, hundreds are constructed across the Saimaa basin, concentrated in Linnansaari and Kolovesi National Parks.
Proof on the Ice
The seals accepted the offer. In recent years, a significant proportion of all documented pups have been born in these man-made drifts. Researchers monitor the sites with trail cameras and, when conditions allow, by peering into lairs through the breathing holes. They count pups, check condition, and tag a few for long-term tracking.
The success is measurable but fragile. A single warm spell in March can melt the drifts before pups are weaned. The volunteers return each year because the climate trend does not reverse.
Beyond the Snowdrifts
Snow is not the only threat. Fishing bycatch kills young pups that wander into nets set for vendace and perch. Seasonal restrictions now close certain areas to net fishing during the breeding season. Seal-safe traps — modified fyke nets with rigid entrance funnels that allow fish in but exclude seals — have been developed. Workshops teach local fishermen to build them; some conservation groups distribute the traps free to anyone who pledges not to use traditional nets in seal zones.
These measures require cooperation from communities that have fished these waters for generations. The transition is not frictionless, but the alternative — a lake without its signature species — is unacceptable to most.
A Winter Ritual Reimagined
On a clear night, the headlamps of the snowdrift builders look like a constellation fallen to the ice. They are park rangers, biology students, retirees, and local residents. Some have done this for a decade. They know the islands by heart: the south-facing shores where drifts form naturally, the spots where currents keep ice thin, the routes that avoid open water.
When the last drift is shaped and the sleds turn for home, the lake returns to silence. Weeks later, a female seal will crawl from a breathing hole into a dark chamber beneath a pile of human-shoveled snow. She will give birth. The pup will nurse on milk that is 40 percent fat, doubling its weight in three weeks. By the time the ice rots in May, it will be ready to swim.
The volunteers will not see it happen. They build the nurseries and leave, trusting the seals to do the rest. It is a quiet compact between a species that has nowhere else to go and a species that refuses to let it vanish.
