The Ministry of After
MTA
A faith-based speculative novel examining religion, ritual, and prophecy in post-zombie society
2nd Edition
The *Ministry of After* is a faith-based speculative novel that explores the reconstruction of social order, religious ritual, and communal ethics in a post-zombie society. Set within the Middleton Community Health and Sanctuary Complex, the story follows Chaplain Thomas Morrow, a man forced to trade traditional theology for a "Gospel of Chlorine." As the leader of a burgeoning ministry, Morrow must navigate the tension between biosecurity and the human soul, establishing "Quarantine Liturgies" that honor the dead and the living through strict protocols, handwashing songs, and a "Doctrine of Distance" that redefines touch as a dangerous transgression.
As the community grows to include a refugee depot and an outer perimeter of desperate pilgrims, Morrow establishes a "Plague Court" to maintain transparency and justice. However, his authority is challenged by two competing spiritual forces: Renata, a woman whose "prophecies" in the local stadium involve speaking the names of the dead, and Corwin, a radical engineer who advocates for a "living altar" of human bones to bypass the sterile safety of the Ministry’s protocols. These internal fractures threaten the compound's stability even more than the "drifters" beyond the walls, forcing the leadership to decide whether faith should be a tool for control or a space for collective grieving.
The novel culminates in the creation of the "Covenant of After," a communal agreement that braids together scientific rigor and spiritual grace. By acknowledging that safety is a matter of "arithmetic" while hope is a matter of "presence," Morrow eventually transitions from a figure of absolute authority to a witness for the community. The story concludes not with a miraculous cure or a reclaimed world, but with the quiet, defiant persistence of human ritual—exemplified by the burial of the dead, the sharing of bread, and the stubborn insistence on asking questions in a world that offers no easy answers.
