The Anthropocene Ark

A climate-fiction epic where an experimental ark preserves Earth's last ecosystems
*The Anthropocene Ark* is a climate-fiction epic that chronicles humanity’s desperate attempt to preserve Earth’s biological heritage within a vast network of experimental habitats. As the outside world succumbs to ecological collapse and rising tides, the caretakers of the Ark—a constellation of mountain vaults, pelagic gates, and sky-tethered arrays—grapple with the brutal "arithmetic of mercy." Led by Dr. Maren Okonkwo and a team of specialized scientists, the program must navigate the impossible ethics of triage, deciding which species to maintain in a living state and which to reduce to genetic code. These decisions are complicated by the Shadow Lobby, a corporate entity seeking to privatize the planet’s remaining biological assets for future industrial use.
The narrative follows several key figures as they face the fraying of the Ark’s internal and external systems. Dr. Aris Thorne manages the legal and meteorological minefield of "Storm Rights," where weather modification is used to protect biomes at the cost of human populations outside. Meanwhile, stewards like Kaelen Vance discover that the mountain vaults are vulnerable to the shifting permafrost, and ecologists like Dr. Linnea Karlsson fight a losing battle to preserve the behavioral integrity of apex predators. Tensions reach a breaking point during the "Betrayal at Pelagic Gate," where corporate theft and internal sabotage nearly destroy the program's most successful marine ecosystems, forcing the Ark to become a defensive regulator rather than a passive sanctuary.
In the final act, the Ark is forced to open its doors prematurely as its internal resources fail. The "Seedfall" protocol begins a transition from preservation to rewilding, as drones and adapted wildlife disperse engineered seeds across the barren, volcanic landscape of a post-collapse Earth. The book concludes with a hard-won truce between the Ark and its corporate rivals, establishing a "Grammar of After"—a future defined by a messy, compromised, yet resilient partnership between human technology and the stubborn, unchosen persistence of the natural world. Together, they begin the millenary task of stitching a new ecology into the ruins of the old.
