The Secret Spire That Stole the Sky
The night sky over Manhattan had never seen anything like it. On October 23, 1929, a 125-foot steel needle, assembled in secret inside the crown of the Chrysler Building, was hoisted through the roof and bolted into place in ninety minutes. When the sun rose, the building stood 1,046 feet tall β nineteen feet higher than 40 Wall Street, the rival tower downtown that had just claimed the title of world's tallest. The architect, William Van Alen, had kept the spire hidden from everyone, including the building's owner, Walter P. Chrysler, until the moment it flew.
The Rivalry That Redefined the Skyline
The race began as a duel between two former partners. Van Alen and H. Craig Severance had split acrimoniously after designing several buildings together. Each now had a commission for a speculative office tower in the late-1920s boom: Van Alen for Chrysler at 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, Severance for the Bank of Manhattan Trust at 40 Wall Street. Both men knew the prestige β and the rental premiums β that came with the "world's tallest" crown.
Severance moved first. In April 1929, he revised his plans, adding two extra floors and a lantern that pushed 40 Wall Street to 925 feet. He leaked the figure to the press, all but declaring victory. The New York Times ran a front-page story: "Bank of Manhattan Building to Be World's Highest." Van Alen, watching from his drafting table, said nothing. He had already designed his counterstroke.
The Needle in the Crown
Van Alen's spire was not an afterthought. Its seven concentric arches, clad in Nirosta stainless steel, were engineered as a single unit: 185 feet long, weighing 27 tons, fabricated in four sections at a shop in Brooklyn. The sections were delivered to the site in ordinary trucks, hoisted to the 65th floor, and assembled inside the building's hollow crown, concealed behind a temporary canvas screen. Workers riveted the pieces together in silence, under threat of instant dismissal if they spoke to reporters.
On the evening of October 23, a derrick on the 68th floor engaged the completed spire. In the glare of floodlights, the needle rose through the open roof hatch, pivoted vertical, and settled into its sockets. By midnight, the first rivets were driven. The next morning, pedestrians on Lexington Avenue craned their necks at a silhouette that had not existed the day before. Severance, informed by telephone, refused to comment. His building remained the tallest by occupied floor β a distinction that mattered to no one but engineers.
The Automobile as Architecture
Van Alen's triumph was as much theatrical as structural. Walter Chrysler had commissioned the building as a monument to his automobile empire, and the architect littered the facade with machine-age ornament: stainless-steel eagle gargoyles modeled on Chrysler hood ornaments, hubcap medallions, and a frieze of stylized racing cars. The crown's sunburst pattern, lit from within at night, turned the tower into a beacon visible from New Jersey. Critics called it vulgar; the public called it magnificent. The building leased rapidly, and Chrysler himself took the top two floors as a personal aerie, complete with a gymnasium and a private dining room.
A Reign of Eleven Months
The glory was brief. Even as the Chrysler spire glittered, a third contender was rising thirty blocks south. The Empire State Building, backed by a syndicate headed by former governor Al Smith, had been designed from the start to exceed 1,200 feet. Its architects, Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, used a ruthless efficiency: 60,000 tons of steel delivered just-in-time from Pennsylvania mills, a workforce of 3,400 men, and a construction pace of four and a half stories per week. On May 1, 1931, President Hoover pressed a button in Washington that lit the tower's floodlights. At 1,250 feet β 204 feet above Chrysler's needle β the new champion stood complete in one year and forty-five days.
Van Alen never designed another major building. The Depression dried up commissions, and his flamboyant style fell out of fashion. Severance died in 1941. Chrysler sold the building in 1953. But the spire remains, still sheathed in the same stainless steel that has never needed polishing, a testament to a night when an architect outwitted a rival with a secret kept in plain sight.
The Race That Changed the Rules
The 1929β31 contest forced a reckoning in building codes and engineering practice. The 1916 zoning law had mandated setbacks to preserve light and air; the Chrysler and Empire State towers proved that setbacks could be aesthetic assets, their stepped profiles becoming the signature of the Art Deco skyscraper. The speed of the Empire State's erection β steel frame rising at a rate previously thought impossible β rewrote the economics of high-rise development. And the very definition of "height" was contested: did a flagpole count? A spire? An antenna? The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, founded decades later, still debates the question.
Today, the Chrysler Building ranks far down the list of the world's tallest. Supertalls in Dubai, Shanghai, and Seoul dwarf it by hundreds of feet. But no later tower was ever born from a sharper act of gamesmanship. The spire that Van Alen hid in the crown remains the only one ever installed by surprise, in darkness, to win a title that lasted less than a year β and became the most famous footnote in the history of the skyline.
