This innovative method involved sending sound waves into the ground and measuring their reflections to create maps of underground rock formations, a significant leap forward from the rudimentary methods of the time.

Karcher, an American geophysicist, had been instrumental in developing the reflection seismograph, even applying for patents as early as 1919.
