Silas reached the top of the platform and swung himself into the operator's chair. He grabbed the metal ladder and began to climb down to the vault floor.

"Silas, wait!" Miller yelled from the blast-shield wall. "Corporate protocol says if we hit unidentified artificial structures, we hold position and notify Sector Operations immediately! We're supposed to lock down the area!"

Silas reached the ground, his heavy boots squelching in the black mud. He didn't look back at Miller. He didn't check his Slate pad, which was currently blinking red with automated telemetry warnings, alerting the local hub that the drill head had encountered anomalous resistance.

He walked past the idling treads of the Leviathan, his eyes locked on the black seam exposed in the rock.

He reached out his gloved hand. He paused three inches from the surface, feeling no heat coming from it—no cold either. It was absolute neutral.

Slowly, Silas pulled his right glove off, dropping the heavy insulated leather into the mud at his feet.

He pressed his bare palm against the dark, unblemished surface.
