By the mid-1990s, search engines like WebCrawler (1994), Lycos (1994), Excite (1995), Infoseek (1995), and AltaVista (1995) had entered the scene. WebCrawler was notable for being the first to index the full text of web pages, making every word searchable and significantly improving relevancy. AltaVista, launched by Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) in 1995, quickly became a dominant player, known for its speed and comprehensive indexing of millions of documents.

Despite these advancements, the existing search engines often delivered messy, irrelevant, or even spam-filled results. Many ranked pages based on how many times a search term appeared, a method easily manipulated and often yielding frustratingly unhelpful outcomes. The quality of search results was a significant pain point for early internet users, highlighting a clear need for a more intelligent and effective approach.

It was into this environment of burgeoning information and imperfect search that Larry Page, a Ph.D. student in computer science at Stanford, began to formulate a revolutionary idea in 1995. Page was considering topics for his doctoral thesis and became captivated by the mathematical properties of the World Wide Web, specifically its link structure. He envisioned understanding the web as a massive graph, where the connections between pages could reveal their importance and relevance.

The research project was initially christened "BackRub." The name was a nod to the algorithm's innovative approach: analyzing the "back links" to a website to determine its importance and credibility. Working from their dorm rooms at Stanford, Page and Brin began to build a search engine that implemented this groundbreaking concept.

Their initial server setup was a testament to their ingenuity and limited resources, reportedly made from LEGO bricks. They maxed out credit cards to acquire the necessary storage, piecing together a network of affordable, used, and borrowed PCs to run their ambitious project.
