CHAPTER ONE: The Lay of the Land: Geography of the Amazon Basin

This is the Amazon Basin, a geographical marvel stretching across approximately 6.3 to 7 million square kilometers, making it roughly 35.5 percent of the South American continent. This immense region is defined by the mighty Amazon River and its countless tributaries, forming a sprawling drainage system that is unparalleled globally. Elevations can vary from sea level at the Atlantic coast to over 6,000 meters (about 19,685 feet) in the Andean headwaters where the Amazon River originates. Yet, for the most part, the basin is a vast, gently sloping plain, with an average elevation of less than 100 meters (328 feet) above sea level.

The journey of the Amazon River itself is a testament to the basin’s colossal scale. Millions of years ago, the river flowed westward, emptying into the Pacific Ocean. But the dramatic uplift of the Andes Mountains, a slow-motion collision of tectonic plates, gradually blocked this flow. The climate of the Amazon Basin is largely tropical, characterized by consistent warmth and high humidity throughout the year. Temperatures typically hover between 25°C (77°F) and 30°C (86°F), although they can fluctuate. Humidity levels are consistently high, ranging on average from 77% in the "drier" periods to 88% in the wetter months. This constant humidity is crucial for the survival and flourishing of the rainforest's myriad plant species.

While the Amazon doesn't experience the distinct four seasons of temperate zones, it does have two main periods: a wet season and a dry season. However, it’s important to understand that "dry" is a relative term in the Amazon; rain falls year-round. The wet season, generally from December to May (or November to May in some areas), brings significantly increased rainfall, causing river levels to rise dramatically—sometimes by as much as 7 meters (23 feet). This inundation transforms the landscape, creating new waterways and allowing access to areas that are otherwise unreachable.

The dry season, typically from June to December, sees lighter rainfall, allowing floodwaters to recede and revealing walking trails. Even during this period, however, rain is a frequent occurrence. The shift between these two seasons dictates many of the daily activities and migration patterns of the region's diverse animal species. For instance, the wet season often coincides with increased fruit production, leading to more active periods for many fruit-eating animals, while the dry season can offer better visibility for wildlife spotting as animals concentrate around remaining water sources.
