It also recognizes the collective efforts of its employees, whose dedication to a patient-centric approach has been instrumental in shaping ResMed's corporate culture and driving its mission to improve lives. The book will explore how this unique culture fostered innovation and resilience, allowing the company to overcome obstacles and maintain its trajectory of growth.

Ultimately, this book offers valuable insights not only for those interested in the history of medical technology and corporate growth but also for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of an S&P 500 company. It is a story of how a company, driven by a profound purpose, can achieve extraordinary success while making a tangible difference in the world. As we delve into ResMed’s past, we will also cast an eye towards its future, examining its ongoing commitment to emerging technologies, sustained innovation, and its enduring legacy in the ever-evolving landscape of sleep and respiratory care.

CHAPTER ONE: The Genesis of an Idea: ResMed's Origins

The story of ResMed, like many pioneering ventures, begins not with a grand corporate strategy, but with a scientific breakthrough and the visionary individuals determined to bring it to the world. To understand ResMed's genesis, we must first travel back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, to a time when sleep apnea was a largely unrecognized and profoundly debilitating condition. Its symptoms were often misdiagnosed, dismissed, or attributed to other ailments, leaving millions to suffer in silence.

Before the advent of effective treatments, the medical community struggled with how to address the severe breathing interruptions experienced by individuals with sleep apnea. The condition, characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, could lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, cardiovascular problems, and a significantly reduced quality of life. In some severe cases, radical surgical procedures, such as a tracheotomy, were even considered.

Enter Professor Colin Sullivan, an Australian physician and professor at the University of Sydney. Sullivan had a keen interest in the upper respiratory airway and its role in various conditions, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). His research into sleep-disordered breathing during the late 1970s laid the groundwork for a revolutionary treatment.

In 1981, Professor Sullivan and his colleagues made a groundbreaking discovery: continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). This innovative, non-invasive treatment involved delivering a continuous stream of air pressure through a mask worn over the nose (or nose and mouth) during sleep. The positive pressure acted as a pneumatic splint, keeping the upper airway open and preventing the collapses that characterized obstructive sleep apnea.

The successful results of Sullivan's initial work were published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet in April 1981, a publication that immediately garnered significant attention within the medical research community. The paper, titled "Reversal of obstructive sleep apnoea by continuous positive airway pressure applied through the nares," detailed the effective treatment of five obstructive sleep apnea patients. This marked a pivotal moment in the history of sleep medicine, offering a promising alternative to more invasive interventions.

The impact of Sullivan's invention cannot be overstated. Prior to CPAP, there was no truly effective and non-surgical treatment for sleep apnea. While the scale of the sleep apnea epidemic was not yet fully understood, Sullivan's work provided the critical first step towards addressing what would later be recognized as a widespread global health issue. The simplicity and effectiveness of the CPAP concept were truly revolutionary.

Sullivan, recognizing the immense potential of his invention, took the crucial step of patenting the technology. This foresight ensured that his intellectual property was protected and provided a foundation for the commercialization of the CPAP device. Initially, he sought assistance from his university's Business Liaison Office for patent protection, but this request was declined. Undeterred, Sullivan financed the patent himself, securing Australian Patent AU 560,360 for a "Device for treating snoring sickness."

However, inventing a life-changing medical device is one thing; bringing it to the masses is another entirely. Sullivan needed a partner with the business acumen and resources to transform his prototype into a scalable, commercially viable product. This is where the paths of Colin Sullivan and Dr. Peter Farrell began to converge.

Dr. Peter Farrell, who would become the founder and long-term CEO of ResMed, was a highly accomplished individual with a strong background in chemical engineering and bioengineering. He held degrees from the University of Sydney, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Washington, Seattle, and a D.Sc. from the University of New South Wales for his research in artificial kidney treatment. Farrell's career included serving as the Foundation Director of the Graduate School for Biomedical Engineering at the University of New South Wales from 1978 to 1989. Simultaneously, from 1984 to 1989, he held the position of Vice President of Research and Development at various subsidiaries of Baxter Healthcare and was also the Managing Director of the Baxter Center for Medical Research Pty Ltd.

In 1986, seeking a commercial partner, Professor Sullivan approached Chris Lynch, who was the Managing Director of the Baxter Centre for Medical Research and Vice President of R&D for Baxter Healthcare. Lynch, in turn, connected Sullivan with his colleague, Dr. Peter Farrell. This introduction proved to be a pivotal moment.

In 1987, Farrell, acting on behalf of Baxter, recognized the profound potential of Sullivan's CPAP technology. Baxter then invested in Sullivan's invention to further develop the CPAP prototype and conduct crucial clinical trials on patients suffering from severe sleep apnea. This collaboration was instrumental in refining the device and gathering further evidence of its effectiveness.

However, despite the promising results and the clear medical need, Baxter Healthcare ultimately decided not to enter the sleep apnea market. The reasons for this decision are varied, but it created an unexpected opportunity. Seeing the immense potential and unwilling to let this life-changing technology languish, Farrell took a bold step.

In June 1989, Dr. Peter Farrell founded ResMed. The name ResMed, short for "Respiratory Medicine," clearly articulated the company's focus. Farrell's vision was to acquire Sullivan's sleep technology from Baxter and, crucially, to commercialize the CPAP device on a global scale. His goal was to make CPAP therapy widely available, allowing millions around the world to benefit from this revolutionary treatment.

The founding of ResMed in Australia marked the true genesis of the company as an independent entity dedicated to sleep and respiratory care. From these origins, fueled by a groundbreaking invention and the entrepreneurial spirit of Dr. Peter Farrell, ResMed began its journey to become a global leader and an S&P 500 company. The initial team was small, numbering only nine individuals, but their ambition was anything but. They were driven by the profound potential of CPAP to transform lives, a commitment that would define ResMed's trajectory for decades to come.
