The Plague Cart
MTA
A first-person chronicle of a traveling apothecary during the 14th-century pandemic
"The Plague Cart" is a first-person chronicle of Nicholas, an apothecary’s apprentice in 14th-century Bristol, who is tasked with delivering medical remedies and "forbidden" pamphlets of practical hygiene across a pandemic-stricken England. Accompanied later by Mara, a courageous scribe, Nicholas travels through major hubs like Bath, Gloucester, and Oxford. Along the way, he transitions from a mere herbalist to a vital link in a "conspiracy of the observant"—a secret network of scholars, physicians, and village healers who prioritize empirical observation and social distancing over the ineffective religious dogmas and superstitions of the era.
As the duo navigates a landscape defined by quarantine marks, military cordons, and the hostile oversight of the Church, they carry "The Physician’s Ledger," a collection of data proving that the plague follows predictable patterns of human contact. The narrative reaches a climax as they evade the Bishop’s men to rescue a midwife from prison and eventually flee across the Channel to the Low Countries. In cities like Sluis and Antwerp, they find a more pragmatic society that embraces their "ordinances" as official policy, leading to the mass printing of their survival guides.
The book concludes with Nicholas and Mara returning to England, no longer as fugitives, but as emboldened emissaries of a new era of reason. They transform their "Testament of Ash"—a record of death and survival—into an international movement for public health. By documenting the effectiveness of measures like the "Rule of Seven" and the "mercy of the boundary," they successfully challenge the prevailing chaos, offering a blueprint for rebuilding a world shattered by the Black Death through the power of the written word and scientific inquiry.
