A historical fiction novel about maps, memory, and the lost trade routes of the 17th century
*The Cartographer’s Wife* is a historical fiction novel set in the 17th century that follows Lysbeth van der Zee, a woman who takes up the mantle of investigator after her husband, Adriaen, a disgraced Dutch cartographer, vanishes from their Amsterdam studio. Adriaen’s reputation was ruined by a maritime disaster blamed on his allegedly inaccurate charts, but Lysbeth discovers he was actually on the trail of a conspiracy involving "The Meridians"—a shadowy consortium of international merchants who manipulate global maps to protect secret trade routes, hidden harbors, and illegal wealth.
To find the truth and clear her husband’s name, Lysbeth travels from the docks of Amsterdam to the dangerous counting houses of Lisbon and eventually to the volcanic archipelago of the Azores. Carrying an unfinished atlas with a missing heart, she aligns with a mercenary Portuguese pilot and a Jesuit mathematician. She eventually discovers that Adriaen has been imprisoned in a convent in Lisbon because he found the "Western Ridge," a hidden maritime highway that allows the Meridians to bypass official trade taxes and monopolize the spice and silver markets.
After a daring rescue and a perilous naval confrontation in a secret "Phoenician Harbor," Lysbeth and Adriaen retrieve a ledger of "invisible ports" that proves the consortium’s corruption. Returning to Amsterdam, they bypass the Dutch East India Company’s attempts to suppress the information by printing the "Portolan Unbound"—a public atlas that exposes the secret routes to the world. Their act of cartographic defiance shatters the Meridians' monopoly and restores Adriaen’s honor.
Ultimately, the novel is an exploration of the power of information and the intimate "longitude" of marriage. By making the secret geography of the 17th century public, Lysbeth and Adriaen transition from being victims of a lie to the architects of a more transparent world. The book concludes with the couple back in their Amsterdam workshop, having replaced a world of salted secrets with a map built on the unwavering light of honesty.
