Improvements in road construction, pioneered by figures like John McAdam and Thomas Telford, led to smoother surfaces and faster average speeds. Coach design saw incremental improvements in comfort and capacity. Schedules became tighter, and the network expanded. Yet, the fundamental limitations remained: dependence on animal power, the constraints of road conditions, relatively low capacity, and high operating costs. The fastest coaches might average 8-10 miles per hour, including stops, meaning a journey of a few hundred miles could take several days.
While ferries addressed water crossings and stagecoaches connected towns, the movement of people within growing urban centres presented its own set of challenges. Before the 19th century, cities were largely "walking cities." Their scale was constrained by the distance a person could reasonably cover on foot to conduct daily business. Wealthier citizens might own private carriages or ride horses, but options for the general public were limited and often informal.
One early form of urban public hire was the sedan chair. In cities built on waterways, water taxis provided an essential service. As mentioned, London's Thames wherries were a vital part of the city's transport network for centuries, offering point-to-point travel along and across the river. Venice's gondolas served a similar function, navigating the intricate canal system. These water-based services could be efficient for certain journeys but were obviously limited by the geography of the city's waterways.
Attempts at organised land-based urban transit were rare and often short-lived before the 19th century. One notable early experiment occurred in Paris in the 1660s. The philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal, along with associates, conceived and launched the "Carrosses à cinq sols" (Five-penny coaches). These were large, horse-drawn carriages running along fixed routes within Paris according to a schedule, charging a flat fare. This system bore remarkable similarities to the later omnibus, offering regular, shared transport accessible to a broader public than private hire carriages. However, despite initial interest, the venture faced challenges, including restrictions preventing soldiers, servants, and other lower-status individuals from using the service, which limited its potential ridership. Internal disagreements and possibly insufficient patronage led to its demise after only a few years. It remained an intriguing but ultimately isolated precursor.
For most city dwellers without private means, getting around involved walking or occasionally hiring a ride on an informal basis, perhaps from a carter heading in the same direction.
