Introduction

Liaoning occupies a singular place in the long and layered history of China. Situated at the northeastern edge of the Central Plains world, it has been at once a frontier and a heartland, a borderland of empires and a cradle of dynasties. From Neolithic villages along the Liao River to the steel mills of Anshan and the port cranes of Dalian, the region has repeatedly found itself at the intersection of agrarian China, steppe powers, and maritime forces from beyond the sea. CHAPTER ONE: Early Settlements and Neolithic Cultures

Long before the rise of empires or the clang of steel in Liaoning’s modern factories, the region’s story began with the quiet hum of river valleys and the steady hands of early farmers. The Liao River, which carves through the heart of present-day Liaoning, was once a cradle of human activity, its fertile banks drawing the first permanent settlements. These communities, emerging around 8000 BCE, were part of a broader revolution in human society: the shift from nomadic hunting and gathering to settled agricultural life. Archaeological evidence suggests that early inhabitants domesticated millet, rice, and pigs here, relying on fertile alluvial soils and seasonal flooding to sustain their crops. The transition was gradual but transformative, setting the stage for the region’s eventual integration into the cultural and political frameworks of ancient China.

One of the earliest known cultures in Liaoning is the Dingcheng Culture, dating back to roughly 7000–5500 BCE. Discovered near the modern city of Shenyang, these early settlements were modest in scale but sophisticated in their adaptation to the environment. The people of Dingcheng constructed semi-subterranean dwellings, likely to insulate against harsh winters, and developed pottery techniques that would influence later cultures. Their tools, made from stone and bone, included polished axes and sickles, indicating a focus on both farming and forest clearing. Curiously, some of their pottery bears geometric patterns that may hint at symbolic expression, a precursor to the more elaborate art seen in later Neolithic societies. These early communities were small but stable, laying the groundwork for the social stratification that would emerge millennia later.

Further east, along the Bohai and Yellow Seas, another distinct culture arose: the Hongshan Culture (4700–2900 BCE). Though centered in what is now Inner Mongolia, their influence extended into Liaoning’s coastal areas. Hongshan towns were larger than their Dingcheng counterparts, with populations reaching several thousand. Their people excelled in jade carving, producing intricate ritual objects like the famous “Hongshan Jade Pig,” which may have symbolized prosperity or spiritual beliefs. These artisans also crafted elaborate burial goods, suggesting a society where ancestry and social hierarchy mattered deeply. Archaeologists have found Hongshan sites rich in pigments, mica, and shells, indicating trade networks that stretched to distant regions. The culture’s emphasis on jade-working would later become a hallmark of northeastern Chinese craftsmanship, a legacy that would persist through the ages.

In the eastern part of Liaoning, the Xinle Culture (4800–3200 BCE) flourished along the middle reaches of the Liao River. Xinle settlements were fortified with wooden palisades, a sign that communal living came with risks—perhaps from rival groups or raiders. Their pottery, often painted with black and red motifs, reflects a keen aesthetic sensibility. Most remarkably, the Xinle people practiced advanced agriculture, cultivating soybeans, barley, and hemp in addition to millet. This diversity of crops suggests they were adapting to local conditions and experimenting with new techniques. Burial practices were elaborate, with bodies interred in wooden coffins alongside weapons, pottery, and even musical instruments. The presence of drums and flutes hints at a spiritual life that valued rhythm and ritual, a theme that would echo through the region’s later religious traditions.

The Beifudi Culture (5000–2500 BCE), located near the Yalu River close to the Korean border, represents another thread in Liaoning’s Neolithic tapestry. These settlements thrived in a region where the Liaodong Peninsula narrows into the Korean Peninsula, a geographic crossroads that would prove pivotal in later centuries. Beifudi people were skilled in pottery and stone tool production, creating implements that were both functional and artistic. Their villages were organized around central plazas, possibly used for communal gatherings or ceremonies. Excavations have revealed evidence of fishhooks and net sinkers, indicating that fishing played a significant role in their subsistence strategy. The discovery of bone needles and woven textiles suggests that textile production was also well-developed, a skill that would become vital as settlements grew more complex and trade expanded.

As these cultures evolved, so too did their interactions with one another and their environment. The climate during the Neolithic period was generally warmer and wetter than today, allowing for lush vegetation that sustained growing populations. However, periodic droughts and temperature fluctuations forced communities to adapt, leading to innovations in irrigation and crop storage. By 3000 BCE, the Liao River basin had become a patchwork of competing settlements, each seeking to control the best farmland and water sources. Conflicts likely arose over resources, but cooperation was equally important. Shared religious practices and trade of luxury goods like jade and shells suggest that these early societies understood the value of alliances, even as they guarded their own interests.

The Neolithic period also saw the emergence of early symbolic systems. These objects were too heavy and brittle for practical use, leading archaeologists to conclude they served ceremonial roles. Similarly, the use of pigments in Xinle burials hints at beliefs about the afterlife. Such practices suggest that these communities were not merely focused on survival but were grappling with questions of identity, power, and the unknown. These themes would become central to the region’s later political and religious institutions, from the Goguryeo kings to the Buddhist temples of the Tang era.

By the late Neolithic era, the foundations of social hierarchy were becoming apparent. Larger settlements like those of Hongshan and Xinle had leaders who could command labor for constructing fortifications or organizing agricultural work. Burial goods varied significantly, with some graves containing dozens of jade objects while others held only simple tools. This disparity suggests that wealth and status were already becoming markers of social rank. Yet these hierarchies remained relatively fluid; leadership roles might have been tied to ritual expertise or military prowess rather than hereditary privilege. These early patterns of governance would evolve into the more formalized structures of the Bronze Age, as communities sought to manage growing populations and complex economies.

The transition from Neolithic to Bronze Age in Liaoning was not abrupt but gradual, marked by technological advances that enabled greater productivity and specialization. The introduction of metalworking, likely through contact with Central Asian steppe peoples, revolutionized tool production. Bronze axes and sickles allowed for more efficient farming, while weapons like daggers and spears transformed warfare. This period, which would be the focus of the next chapter, saw the rise of the Yan State and its predecessors. However, the groundwork for these developments was laid by Neolithic societies that learned to harness their environment, trade with neighbors, and organize themselves into cohesive communities. Without their innovations, the later political entities of Liaoning might never have taken root.

Among the most enigmatic Neolithic sites in Liaoning is the ancient city of Huludao, located on the Bohai coast. Excavations here have uncovered evidence of large-scale salt production, a rare find in prehistoric contexts. The people of Huludao boiled seawater in clay vessels to extract salt, which they then traded inland. This industry, likely managed by skilled craft specialists, hints at a nascent economy based on resource exploitation and exchange. Salt was a crucial commodity in ancient China, used not only for flavoring food but also for preserving meat and maintaining health. The ability to produce it on an industrial scale would have given Huludao a strategic advantage, attracting merchants and settlers from surrounding regions.

The maritime orientation of Huludao and other coastal settlements reflects Liaoning’s geographic versatility. While the interior focused on agriculture, the coastal areas developed fishing and salt-making industries that connected them to broader networks. Shell middens, or heaps of discarded shells, dot the landscape along the Bohai coast, testifying to millennia of human interaction with marine resources. Some of these shell deposits are enormous, containing millions of mollusk shells, which suggests sustained exploitation of coastal ecosystems. Yet this relationship was not one-sided; the people of these communities may have also managed their resources carefully, moving between seasonal camps to avoid overharvesting. Their adaptability would prove essential as Liaoning’s later rulers sought to control both land and sea trade routes.

Inland, Neolithic communities developed distinct strategies for dealing with the region’s temperate climate. Pottery kilns, found at sites like those of the Longshan Culture in neighboring Shanxi, were likely adopted by Liaoning’s inhabitants to store grain and cook food. These kilns required precise temperature control, suggesting that Neolithic potters possessed advanced technical knowledge. The uniformity of pottery styles across different settlements also indicates that cultural exchange was common, even across considerable distances. This interconnectedness would later facilitate the rapid spread of ideas and technologies during the Bronze Age, as Liaoning’s communities found themselves increasingly drawn into larger political and economic systems.

One of the more intriguing aspects of Liaoning’s Neolithic period is the evidence of early writing systems. While full-fledged scripts like Chinese oracle bone script emerged later, symbols on pottery and jade objects suggest that these communities had developed symbolic means of communication. These symbols might have represented ownership, ritual significance, or clan identities. Their simplicity implies that they were not yet used for complex record-keeping but served more immediate social functions. The later adoption of Chinese characters in Liaoning’s Bronze Age sites, such as those of the Yan State, can be seen as a continuation of this symbolic tradition, albeit one adapted to new political realities.

The decline of Neolithic cultures in Liaoning around 2000 BCE is still a subject of debate among archaeologists. Some argue that climate change, particularly a shift toward drier conditions, made agriculture less viable. Others suggest that increased competition from emerging Bronze Age societies disrupted existing trade and settlement patterns. Whatever the cause, the transition was not total. Many Neolithic practices, such as jade-working and certain agricultural techniques, persisted into the Bronze Age. This continuity underscores the resilience of local traditions, even as external influences reshaped the region’s cultural and political landscape. The people of Liaoning were not passive recipients of change but active participants in their own evolution.

As we prepare to move into the Bronze Age, it is worth reflecting on the Neolithic legacy that underpins Liaoning’s later history. These early settlements established patterns of settlement along major rivers, cultivated crops and livestock that would feed future populations, and developed craft traditions that connected the region to broader cultural currents. Their innovations in agriculture, trade, and social organization provided the scaffolding for the complex societies that would emerge in subsequent millennia. In many ways, the story of Liaoning’s Neolithic peoples is the story of how humans learned to thrive in a challenging environment, turning rivers, seas, and forests into sources of prosperity and identity. Without this groundwork, the region might have remained a periphery forever. Instead, it became a heartland of its own making.
