With every massive wave that hit the platform’s eastern legs, the entire bunk room shifted slightly, swinging through a fraction of a degree before settling back with a deep, groaning shudder that vibrated through Maren’s skull.
She raised her left arm, holding her wrist-link close to her face in the dark.
She tapped the cracked liquid-crystal screen, navigating past the daily work orders, the yield statistics, and the caloric tracking logs until she reached her personal file. It was a standard, low-level worker entry, stripped of almost all personal history.

Maren frowned. Standard age-transition files were low-level administrative data. Any deck technician had access to their own baseline physical logs—it was how they tracked muscle fatigue, lung capacity drops, and joint wear over time so they could adjust their work routines. There was no reason for a junior maintenance worker’s transition file to be locked behind Level Four clearance. Level Four was reserved for core system diagnostics, fuel reserve ledgers, and structural integrity limits.
She tapped the screen once more, trying a basic system query that Dax had taught her years ago—a simple bypass command used by maintenance crews to check pipe pressure logs when the local data nodes were offline.
The screen flickered. For a fraction of a second, the grey restriction box vanished, replaced by a single line of raw system code that had been cached in her link’s temporary buffer during the workshop sync:

Maren pulled her hand down and stared up at the dark fiberglass ceiling of her bunk, six inches above her nose. The smell of salt, grease, and chlorine filled her nose as she listened to the platform groan against the Atlantic tide.
Her wrist-link flickered in the dark, a tiny green light pulsing silently against her skin, counting down the minutes until the start of the three-hundred watch.
