"Use the pick, Caspian. Twelve seconds."
Caspian pulled a three-cornered scraper from his vest, jammed it into the copper thread, and cleared the grit with three vicious, scraping strokes that set her teeth on edge. He slammed the second lead ball home, spun the nut until it squealed, and yanked his hands clear.
For three seconds, nothing happened. The lead balls bobbed slightly in the dark water, their mass mimicking the hydraulic load of sixty barrels of runoff pressing against the drainage weir.
Deep in the stone, a second valve cleared its throat.
With a heavy, wet suck of displaced water, the culvert gate gave a convulsive shudder and rose all the way. It moved smoothly now, disappearing eighteen inches into the granite arch, leaving an opening two feet high—just enough for a human being to crawl through, provided they took off their coat and dragged their kit behind them on a rope.
"Silas, kill the bellows," Maren whispered.
Silas let the leather handles collapse, his shoulders dropping two inches in relief. He quickly capped the acoustic horn with a greased leather plug to prevent back-drafting and began strapping the rig back onto his frame with quick, jerky pulls of the webbing.
"How long is the sluice cycle?" he asked, wiping mud from his chin with his sleeve.
"Eight minutes," Caspian said, his eyes on the silver hunter-case watch. "Unless the Abbot runs an internal balance check. If it compares the outflow at the lower weir against the reservoir sensors on the roof, it’ll realize forty gallons of water are missing from the equation. Then it closes the gate and flushes the line with steam."
"Then we don't spend seven minutes in the pipe," Maren said.
She went in first, flat on her stomach, her elbows digging into the gravel lining the floor of the culvert. The water was six inches deep, fast-moving and cold enough to make her temples ache with a sharp, blinding migraine. She pulled her pack behind her by a three-foot length of tarred hemp line tied to her right ankle.
The culvert was twenty yards long, built of heavy, square-hewn granite blocks that had been pointed with hydraulic lime that had turned hard as flint over the centuries. There were no lights, no inspection ports, and no handholds. The air was thick and dead, compressed by the weight of the mountain above and tainted with the oily, sweet smell of steam-cylinder lubricants.
Behind her, she heard the rhythmic, wet scraping of Caspian and Silas dragging their bodies through the conduit. Caspian was counting under his breath—not in seconds, but in links of the drive chain that controlled the upper sluice: "One-and-twenty, one-and-twenty-two, one-and-twenty-three..."
The culvert ended at an iron hatch set into the ceiling of the conduit: an emergency access trunk for maintenance crews that had not existed for two hundred years. The hatch was round, two feet across, secured from below by four bronze dogs that were black with age and tallow.
Maren rolled onto her back in the freezing water, her nose three inches from the granite roof. She reached up, her hands finding the first dog. It was cold, cold as ice, and the grease on the threads had turned into a hard, waxy resin that bit into the palms of her hands.
"Silas," she croaked, the water lapping at the corners of her mouth. "The wrench. The eight-inch dog-leg."
Silas’s hand appeared out of the dark behind her shoulder, holding a flat piece of case-hardened iron shaped like an elongated S. Maren took it, set the socket over the square head of the first bronze dog, and threw the whole weight of her upper body into the leverage.
The iron creaked. A shower of dried tallow and rust flakes fell into her eyes, stinging like pepper. She blinked them clear with tears, shifted her grip, and hauled again.
With a sharp, dry snap that sounded like an iron rod breaking under tension, the first dog gave two inches.
She moved to the second. It turned more easily, the threads stripping away their ancient wax with a tearing sound. The third was loose enough to spin by hand.
The fourth dog was not bronze.
Maren’s fingers froze against the metal. It was cold, but it didn't have the greasy, soft texture of bronze or the pitted crust of wrought iron. It was glass-smooth, perfectly cylindrical, and made of high-nickel steel. From its center, a thin tube of braided copper ran straight up into the rim of the hatch frame, vanishing into the masonry.
"Cas," she whispered, her voice barely a breath against the iron plate. "We have a tell-tale."
Caspian slithered up beside her, his face gray in the gloom of the pipe. He reached past her shoulder, his long, delicate fingers tracing the contour of the steel cylinder without putting an ounce of pressure on the shaft.
"Pneumatic micro-switch," he said, his voice flat with despair. "It’s not electrical. It’s a differential air-line. The Abbot keeps the switch closed with three pounds of air pressure from a line running down from the upper cloisters. If we back the dog off, the valve vents half an ounce of air into the culvert. The pressure drop travels up the line at the speed of sound. The core registers the pressure drop forty yards before the dog even clears the thread."
"Can we bypass it?" Maren asked.
Silas was shivering behind them, his teeth chattering with an audible, rhythmic click that sounded like an old telegraph. "We have three minutes before the sluice cycle ends, Maren. If that gate drops while we’re in this pipe, we’re drowned rats in an iron trap."
"We can’t bypass the line," Caspian said, his fingers moving frantically over his kit bag, pulling out small brass couplings and short lengths of vulcanized rubber tubing. "I don't have the tap for this diameter. It’s three-eighths inch, European standard. Everything I brought is quarter-inch imperial."
"Then what does the switch do if the pressure drops?" Maren asked.
"It doesn't ring a bell," Caspian said. "The Abbot doesn't waste time making noise. It interprets a pressure drop on an access hatch as a gasket failure. It routes ten pounds of boiler steam to the access trunk to seal the leak with condensate."
"How long before the steam hits?"
"Six seconds from the drop," Caspian said. "Maybe seven if the line is cold."
Maren stared at the round iron plate above her. The water in the culvert was rising now, climbing past her ribs, lapping at the lower edge of her jaw. The lead weights at the mouth of the tunnel were beginning to slip in the current; she could hear the bronze balance arm chattering against its stop twenty yards behind them.
"Silas," she said.
"Yeah?"
"Get the grease gun."
Silas didn't ask what she was doing. He reached into his belt pouch and handed her the heavy brass syringe filled with tallow and powdered mica—the thick, high-temperature packing grease used to seal steam-engine pistons.
Maren jammed the nozzle of the grease gun straight into the exhaust port of the pneumatic switch, right where the nickel cylinder met the bronze rim of the hatch. She slammed the wooden plunger down with the heel of her palm, forcing half a pound of tallow deep into the air channel, packing it until the grease blew out around the nozzle in thick, yellow curls.
"It won't hold five pounds of air," Caspian whispered, his eyes wide.
"It doesn't have to hold five pounds," Maren said, dropping the wrench and grabbing the fourth dog with both hands. "It just has to hold three pounds for six seconds while we lift the plate."
She wrenched the nickel dog to the left.
The switch gave a faint, wet pop as the thread broke free, followed by a tiny hiss of escaping air that died instantly as the thick tallow plugged the orifice. For one second, two seconds, three seconds, the grease held against the pressure from the central line.
"Up," Maren grunted.
She and Silas put their shoulders against the circular iron plate and shoved.
The hatch was monstrously heavy, three hundred pounds of cast iron and lead lining, but the hydraulic grease in the rim had kept the seat from welding shut. It lifted with a heavy, sucking groan, swinging back on a massive counterbalanced hinge into the black space above.
Maren scrambled through the opening like an eel, her wet wool coat dragging across the granite sill. Silas shoved Caspian up through the hole by his boots, then lunged upward himself just as the first sluice gate twenty yards down the pipe slammed shut with the force of an artillery piece.
A wall of black water, backed by three hundred feet of head-pressure from the mountain reservoir, hit the culvert like a solid piston. A spray of foam shot up through the open hatch, drenching their boots before Silas slammed the iron cover back into its rim and spun the three bronze dogs shut with his heels.
They lay on their bellies on a floor of dry, cold flagstones, their chests heaving, their clothes pouring foul-smelling swamp water into the cracks between the stones.
The silence here was different from the silence of the valley. It was not the natural quiet of trees and stone, but the dead, pressurized stillness of a sealed tomb. The air was bone-dry, ten degrees warmer than the culvert, and carried the faint, rhythmic vibration of heavy machinery turning five floors below their heads.
Maren sat up, wiping the slime from her eyes.
They were in a long, low gallery built of dressed granite, roofed with ribbed stone vaulting that vanished into the darkness forty yards ahead. Down the center of the floor ran a set of dual iron rails, six inches wide, their surfaces polished to a bright, greasy silver by the passage of heavy iron wheels.
Every ten feet, mounted to the walls at eye level, were heavy brass brackets holding oil lamps that had long since burned dry. But below the lamps, bolted directly into the sixteenth-century stone, were long runs of heavy copper conduit, thick as a man's wrist, leading toward a set of massive, double-leaf iron doors at the far end of the hall.
Caspian pulled his pocket watch from his vest. The hunter case was wet, but the interior seal had held. He clicked it open.
"We’re two minutes behind the tape," he whispered, his voice trembling with exhaustion.
"We’re inside," Silas said, resting his forehead against the dry stone floor.
"No," Maren said, rising to a crouch and checking the leather seals on her paper-tape reader. Her eyes were fixed on the polished iron rails running down the center of the gallery. "We’re in the intake track. Caspian, check the rail temperature."
Caspian reached out and laid his bare palm against the iron rail. He pulled his hand back instantly, his skin white where it had touched the metal.
"It’s hot," he whispered. "The rail is eighty degrees."
"Something’s moving on this line," Maren said, reaching for the short-barreled iron pry-bar strapped to her frame. "And it isn't carrying a watch."
