Finch did not move. He did not raise his hand or shout. He simply stood there, illuminated by the yellow glow of the paraffin lamp, looking at Arthur as if he were a specimen of some particularly unpleasant parasite found beneath a flat stone.
"Cooked data," Finch repeated very softly.
"I... I mean to say," Arthur stammered, his courage faltering slightly beneath the weight of that icy glare, "it is an improper adjustment of the apparatus. Finch picked up his own lamp, turned his back on Arthur, and ducked out of the room, his heavy footfalls echoing down the wooden corridor until they were swallowed by the murmur of the stove room.
Arthur stood alone in the dark corner of the instrument room, his hand still clutching the tiny brass screwdriver in his pocket. His heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
