The Grand Canyon crash shocked the nation and shattered the comfortable illusion that the existing regulatory apparatus was sufficient for the jet age. Congress realized that air traffic control could no longer be managed piecemeal by an underfunded bureau. In response, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal Aviation Act of 1958.
