To bridge this gap, Socrates introduces a third ingredient: a "rational account" or logos. True judgment accompanied by a rational account, he suggests, constitutes knowledge. While Plato himself ends the Theaetetus on a somewhat inconclusive, aporetic note—debating what exactly a logos entails—the core idea stuck. Over the ensuing centuries, Western philosophers refined this three-legged stool. By the twentieth century, the consensus had settled into a neat formula composed of three individually necessary and jointly sufficient conditions. To say that a person, let us call her S, knows a proposition, let us call it P, is to state three distinct facts: P is true, S believes P, and S is justified in believing P.

The first condition of the tripartite account is the Truth Condition. It asserts that you cannot know something that is false. This seems almost absurdly obvious, yet it is a non-negotiable anchor of cognitive discourse. Knowledge is an relation between a conscious mind and reality. If a proposition does not align with reality, it cannot be known. A person might firmly insist that the earth is flat, but they cannot be said to know that the earth is flat, simply because the earth is not flat. They may believe it, they may assert it, and they may even spend their life writing manifestos about it, but their cognitive state falls short of knowledge due to a total mismatch with reality.

It is worth noting the linguistic nuance here. We often hear people say things like, "Five hundred years ago, everyone knew the sun revolved around the earth." But from a strict epistemological perspective, this is a colloquial misnomer. What people five hundred years ago actually possessed was a justified belief that the sun revolved around the earth. They did not know it, because it was not true. Truth is objective and external to the mind of the knower. If a belief is false, it fails the first criterion of knowledge immediately, regardless of how passionately it is held or how brilliant the mind holding it happens to be.

The second condition is the Belief Condition. Knowledge requires a subjective mental state; it demands an internal commitment from the agent. You cannot possess knowledge about a state of affairs while entirely lacking any mental representation or acceptance of that state of affairs. If someone asks you whether Canberra is the capital of Australia, and you genuinely have no idea, having never entertained the thought or learned the fact, you do not know that Canberra is the capital of Australia. Even if the statement "Canberra is the capital of Australia" is indisputably true, it has not taken root in your mental framework.

The belief condition establishes that knowledge is a property of thinking agents, not an abstract property of facts existing in a vacuum. A encyclopedia resting on a bookshelf contains true statements, but the book itself does not know anything because it lacks mental states, subjective awareness, and beliefs. To know P, an individual must genuinely assent to P. They must hold P to be true. While some philosophers have debated whether belief and knowledge are mutually exclusive—arguing that once you know something, you no longer merely believe it—the standard tripartite view treats belief as the foundational mental container into which truth and justification must be added.

If knowledge were merely true belief, however, our cognitive lives would be dominated by absurdities. This brings us to the third and most complex component: the Justification Condition. Imagine a man named Arthur who is chronically paranoid. Arthur wakes up every morning convinced that there is a blue Chevrolet parked outside his house. He has no evidence for this belief; he has not looked out the window, no one has told him about a car, and his neighborhood is usually devoid of traffic. He simply holds an irrational, obsessive conviction. Now, suppose that on one particular Tuesday, purely by coincidence, a driver whose blue Chevrolet broke down happens to park outside Arthur’s house five minutes before Arthur wakes up.

When Arthur asserts, "There is a blue Chevrolet outside my house," his assertion satisfies the first two conditions. The proposition is true: there is indeed a blue Chevrolet outside. Arthur believes it: he holds the conviction with total confidence. Yet, does Arthur know that the car is outside? Virtually everyone’s intuition rebels at the suggestion. Arthur’s belief is a blind guess, a fluke born of delusion that just happened to align with reality. He hit an intellectual bullseye while blindfolded.

The justification condition was designed specifically to exclude cases of epistemic luck like Arthur’s. To count as knowledge, a true belief must be anchored by appropriate ground. The agent must possess good reasons, evidence, perceptual data, logical arguments, or reliable testimonies that warrant holding that specific belief. Justification is the glue that binds the mind’s internal beliefs to the external structure of truth in a non-accidental way. It is the requirement that transforms a wild guess that turns out to be right into a legitimate cognitive achievement.

Throughout the history of philosophy, the exact nature of this third condition sparked immense debate, even while the overall tripartite framework remained intact. What counts as sufficient justification? Rationalists emphasized logical deduction and self-evident axioms, arguing that true justification comes from the clear and distinct operations of reason. Empiricists countered that justification must ultimately trace back to sensory experience—sight, sound, touch, and empirical observation.

Despite these internal disagreements about the source of evidence, the core structural model of the Tripartite Account remained remarkably durable. It provided an appealingly symmetrical definition:

Knowledge = Belief + Truth + Justification

Under this conceptual blueprint, these three conditions were understood to be individually necessary and jointly sufficient. To say they are individually necessary means that if you remove any single one of them, knowledge vanishes. Remove truth, and you have error or delusion. Remove belief, and you have an external fact that has not been apprehended by the mind. Remove justification, and you have a lucky guess or irrational hunch. To say they are jointly sufficient means that whenever a situation features all three conditions combined, knowledge is guaranteed to exist. No fourth ingredient, philosophers believed, was required.

This tripartite analysis offered an elegant, systematic foundation for epistemologists. It allowed them to frame their investigations with precision. Instead of asking the vague question "What is knowledge?", they could analyze the specific criteria for evidence, the reliability of human perception, the validity of memory, and the mechanics of logical inference. The framework stood as an intellectual triumph, surviving centuries of philosophical skepticism, rationalist-empiricist rivalries, and major shifts in scientific paradigms.

By the mid-twentieth century, this standard definition was routinely taught in university classrooms as an established axiom of conceptual analysis.
