Introduction

For over two thousand years, Western philosophy rested on a comfortable, seemingly unassailable definition of knowledge. He did not write a dense, book-length treatise dismantling centuries of thought. He did not introduce complex mathematical logic or recondite metaphysics. Instead, he presented two simple, brilliantly constructed thought experiments—scenarios involving job applicants, coins in pockets, and owned cars—that proved a devastating point: a person can have a belief that is entirely true, supported by flawless justification, and yet still clearly lack knowledge.

Gettier’s paper acted as a philosophical earthquake. By demonstrating that one could stumble into a justified true belief through sheer epistemic luck, he shattered the classical consensus overnight. If justified true belief was not enough to constitute knowledge, then what was? CHAPTER ONE: The Tripartite Theory: Plato and the Justified True Belief Model

What does it actually mean to say that you know something? On any given day, we throw around the word "know" with comfortable casualness. You know that your keys are on the kitchen counter. You know that Paris is the capital of France. You know that water freezes at zero degrees Celsius, and you know that your best friend was upset with you yesterday. Yet, if pushed to define the exact boundary where mere opinion ends and genuine knowledge begins, most people find themselves reaching for concepts that seem self-evident: reality, certainty, and reasonable evidence.

Long before modern philosophers began debating edge cases and thought experiments, ancient thinkers recognized that knowledge required a precise structure to distinguish it from wild guesses or ungrounded assumptions. The foundational framework that emerged from this ancient inquiry came to be known as the Tripartite Theory of Knowledge, or the Justified True Belief (JTB) model. For the vast majority of Western intellectual history, this model provided the standard working definition of what it takes for a mind to grasp a fact about reality.

To understand why this model was so dominant for thousands of years, one must return to classical Athens, specifically to the work of Plato. In his dialogue, the Theaetetus, Plato sets out to answer a deceptively simple question posed by Socrates to a bright young mathematician named Theaetetus: What is knowledge?

The dialogue progresses through several attempts at a definition. First, Theaetetus suggests that knowledge is simply perception—what we see, hear, or feel. Socrates quickly dismantles this by showing that perceptions are subjective and fleeting; what feels cold to a sick person might feel warm to a healthy person, yet the air itself hasn't changed. Knowledge cannot merely be a sensory reaction. Next, Theaetetus proposes that knowledge is "true judgment" or true belief. But Socrates points out that a person can arrive at a true belief entirely by accident or through persuasion. A silver-tongued lawyer, for instance, might convince a jury that an accused man is innocent. Even if the man truly happens to be innocent, the jury does not possess true knowledge; they merely hold a correct opinion that was coaxed out of them by rhetoric rather than evidence.

This brings the dialogue to its crucial third proposal: knowledge is true belief accompanied by an "account" or logos. In modern philosophical terminology, this logos is translated as justification. To know something, it is not enough to hold a belief that happens to align with reality; you must also be able to explain why it is true, grounding your belief in sound reasoning, evidence, or demonstration.

Though Plato himself raises subtle complications at the end of the Theaetetus regarding what, precisely, constitutes a satisfactory logos, the core structure he outlined stuck. This structure consists of three distinct, necessary conditions that together were thought to be sufficient for knowledge. If a proposition—let us call it P—is to count as knowledge for a person, three criteria must be satisfied simultaneously:

First, the belief condition. A person cannot be said to know P if they do not actually believe P. Belief is the psychological requirement. It represents the internal mental state of an individual taking a proposition to be true. If you claim to "know" that the Earth orbits the Sun, but deep down you harbor genuine doubts and think it is actually stationary, you do not truly know it; you are merely mouthing the words. Knowledge requires an authentic internal cognitive commitment.

Second, the truth condition. A person cannot know P if P is false. Truth is the objective requirement. It anchors the mental state of the believer to external reality. No matter how passionately, sincerely, or deeply someone believes that the Earth is flat, they cannot know that the Earth is flat, because it simply isn't flat. You can hold a false belief, you can be convinced of a falsehood, and you can harbor a profound delusion, but you cannot have false knowledge. Knowledge must correspond to the way the world actually is.

Third, the justification condition. A person cannot be said to know P merely because they hold a true belief in P; that belief must be supported by adequate grounds. Justification is the normative or epistemic requirement. It is what separates genuine intellectual achievement from lucky guesses, superstition, or random hunches.

Consider a simple illustration of why all three components were historically thought to be indispensable. Imagine a gambler standing at a roulette table in Las Vegas. Before the wheel is spun, he experiences a sudden, vivid emotional flash and announces, "I know the ball is going to land on green seventeen." The wheel spins, the ball bounces, and against all odds, it drops neatly into the green seventeen slot.

Did the gambler know that the ball would land on green seventeen? Common sense, as well as classical philosophy, answers with an emphatic no. The gambler certainly believed the proposition, and the proposition turned out to be completely true. Thus, he possessed a true belief. What he lacked was justification. His belief was driven by a blind hunch, an ungrounded feeling, or perhaps a superstitious impulse. He had no rational evidence, no reliable data, and no mathematical reason to expect that specific outcome over any other. The truth of his belief was a matter of raw, unearned luck. Epistemologists have long agreed that lucky guesses do not constitute knowledge.

Now flip the scenario. Suppose an astronomer spends decades studying orbital mechanics, analyzing telemetry data from radio telescopes, and checking complex mathematical calculations. Based on this mountain of rigorous evidence, she concludes that a previously undiscovered comet will pass near Earth in the year 2030. She believes it firmly, and her justification is ironclad, rooted in the best scientific methods available. However, unbeknownst to her, a tiny mathematical error slipped into her code, and the comet will actually miss Earth entirely.

Does the astronomer know the comet will pass near Earth? Again, the answer is no. She has a belief, and she has justification, but her belief lacks truth. Without truth, the chain breaks, and the status of "knowledge" is denied.

For centuries, this three-part standard appeared airtight. It neatly mapped onto our deepest intuitions about human thought and the external world. It balanced the subjective side of cognition—what goes on inside our minds via belief and justification—with the objective state of the world via truth.

The elegance of the JTB model lies in its logical simplicity. Epistemologists represented it using standard symbolic logic:

An agent S knows a proposition P if and only if:

  1. P is true,
  2. S believes that P, and
  3. S is justified in believing that P.

Under this conceptualization, each condition is individually necessary. Take away the truth, and you have delusion or error. Take away the belief, and you have indifference or disbelief. Take away the justification, and you have a blind guess or arbitrary opinion. Conversely, when all three conditions are present, they were believed to be jointly sufficient. In other words, if you satisfy all three criteria, there is no further test you need to pass. You have achieved knowledge.

This formalization gave philosophers a clean, powerful tool for analyzing claims across every domain of human thought. Whether dealing with historical claims, scientific theories, mathematical proofs, or everyday observations, the JTB model provided a universal checklist. To evaluate whether someone truly possessed knowledge, one simply had to audit their belief, verify the objective facts, and evaluate the strength of their reasons.

Throughout antiquity and into the modern era, variations of this basic structure were refined, debated, and re-asserted. While thinkers differed on what constituted legitimate justification—some favoring pure logical deduction, others emphasizing empirical observation or divine revelation—the fundamental triad of Belief, Truth, and Justification remained the standard architecture of epistemology. It was the intellectual bedrock upon which theories of mind, science, and logic were systematically erected, standing untroubled for generation after generation.
