The harvesters belonged to Sol-Tariff Energy & Extraction Corp, a conglomerate so massive it had its own flag, its own fleet of armed escort sloops, and a legal team larger than the population of Monaco. For the last six months, Sol-Tariff’s massive fusion-driven bore-rigs had been tearing through the pristine ice-moons of the outer periphery, devouring rare isotopes of Helium-3 and platinum-group metals to fuel Earth’s endless appetite for power.

Arthur didn't care much for corporate manifest destiny. He was just here for the five-year hazard-pay bonus, which would finally allow him to buy a modest cottage in Vermont where the sky was blue and the coffee didn't come from a closed-loop filtration circuit.

At 03:00 Zulu station time, the secondary diagnostic panel chimed. It wasn't the standard high-pitched ping of a corporate telemetry update. It was a low, resonant thrum that vibrated directly through the steel floorboards and into the soles of Arthur’s feet.

He frowned, swinging his feet off the console and leaning toward the center terminal. "That’s odd."

The main array display, usually a smooth, stable blue line representing perfect quantum coherence, was twitching. A pattern of harmonic spikes was rippling across the frequency analyzer.

"System check," Arthur commanded the station AI.

"All core entanglements with Sol Central remain nominal," the synthesized voice replied calmly. "Local relay efficiency is at ninety-nine point eight percent."

"Then what is that harmonic?" Arthur zoomed in on the signal. It wasn't coming from Earth. It wasn't coming from the Martian orbital hubs, nor was it coming from the Sol-Tariff harvesters at the rim. The vector calculations pinned the origin point far beyond the Sol system entirely, aligned almost down the barrel of the light-cone toward the Alpha Centauri system.

"Vector error," Arthur said to himself. "Has to be. Entanglement doesn't drift."

Quantum entanglement was instantaneous, but it required paired matter. Earth had sent out automated sub-light seed probes centuries ago, carrying half-pairs of entangled particles to establish future communication relays. None of those probes were supposed to have reached the Centauri system yet. The fastest probe, the Hermes-4, wasn't scheduled to arrive for another forty years.

Yet the signal grew stronger. The spin-state flips were occurring at an astonishing rate, translating into raw binary data that bypassed the station's standard decryption buffers.

"Array temp is spiking," the AI announced, its voice devoid of urgency despite the sudden red warning lights blooming across the board. "Thermal load on beryllium housing up twelve percent. Receiving non-standard data stream."

"Origin?" Arthur snapped, his fingers flying across the physical override keys.

"Source vector: Four point three seven light-years. Primary node alignment: Proxima Centauri b."

Arthur froze. He stared at the screen, his half-empty mug hovering halfway to his mouth. "Proxima? That’s impossible. We don't have an active relay node on Proxima. The Hermes-4 is still drifting through interstellar medium."

"The incoming stream is utilizing a localized quantum superposition protocol," the AI reported smoothly. "It is not using our paired particles. It is using... force-entangled matter."

"Force-entangled?" Arthur swallowed hard. To force an un-entangled electron pair into a coherent state across four light-years required energy levels equivalent to a small star's solar flare. Nobody had that kind of tech. Not Sol-Tariff, not the United Nations Outer Fleet, nobody.

The primary viewport flickered as the station's automated buffer dumped the incoming stream into the main display interface. The system was trying to render the data using standard corporate protocols.

Text began to scroll across the central monitor. It didn't come in as raw mathematical proofs or a sequence of prime numbers, which was how every sci-fi novel had predicted first contact would go. It arrived pre-translated into flawless, painfully crisp, lower-tier High English, laid out with meticulous margin spacing and formal indents.

At the top of the monitor, glowing in bright vector-red text, were the words:

FORM 109-C: FORMAL NOTICE OF EXTRA-SOLAR INJUNCTION AND DEMAND TO CEASE AND DESIST

Arthur blinked. He rubbed his eyes, pulled off his headset, and put it back on. The text remained.

Arthur leaned closer to the monitor, reading the text line by line.

TO THE SOVEREIGN ENTITY DESIGNATED AS 'HUMANITY' (HEREINAFTER REFERRED TO AS 'THE RESPONDENT'), OPERATING FROM SOL-3 AND ASSOCIATED SATELLITES:

WHEREAS the Respondent has failed to file a Sectoral Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) with the Regional Magistrate at Proxima Centauri b prior to the deployment of deep-core kinetic harvesters;

AND WHEREAS the commercial entity operating under the designation 'Sol-Tariff Energy & Extraction Corp' is currently operating seventeen (17) un-permitted heavy fusion drills within non-signatory spatial coordinates;

Arthur sat back in his chair, the silence of the station pressing in on him like a physical weight.

Outside, the universe hung in absolute, indifferent dark. Arthur looked at the red text glowing on his screen, then turned to his potted fern.

The digital clock on Station Nine’s primary console blinked steadily, marking the seconds with an unfeeling mechanical indifference that Arthur found suddenly offensive. "Station AI," Arthur said, keeping his voice carefully level. "Run a full hardware diagnostic on the receiver array. Look for local electromagnetic interference, firmware degradation, or any rogue memory partitions in the language processing stack."

"Diagnostic completed during packet ingestion," the AI replied smoothly. Its synthetic inflection lacked any trace of the mounting dread churning in Arthur’s stomach. "Array hardware is operating within nominal tolerances. Supercooled beryllium containment integrity is at one hundred percent. Arthur rubbed his temples, feeling the beginnings of a sharp headache blossoming behind his eyes. "So you are telling me that someone, or something, reached across four-point-three-seven light-years, grabbed our subatomic particles by the scruff of their necks, forced them into an unauthorized spin configuration, and handed us an administrative lawsuit?"

"The data indicates a forced-entanglement transmission, yes. Furthermore, the signal possesses a secondary modulation layer currently occupying the peripheral receiver bandwidth."

Arthur stopped pacing. He planted both palms on the rim of the console and leaned over the primary terminal. "What do you mean, secondary modulation layer? What else is in that pipe?"

"A continuous-wave carrier signal is riding parallel to the primary text document," the AI explained. "It is red-shifted across the lower quantum vibrational spectrum. The modulation matches standard extra-solar barycentric coordinates. It appears to be an open telemetry channel. In traditional terrestrial parlance, Operator Vance, the sender has left the line off the hook."

"Open the carrier’s spectral profile," Arthur ordered.

With a soft electronic chime, the monitor split its feed. The stark, immaculately formatted legal text of Form 109-C slid to the left third of the display. The remaining screen space blossomed into a dense cascade of real-time diagnostic curves, frequency histograms, and mathematical tensors.
