"There is another matter," Kleon said, setting down his stylus. "The Romans."
Eudoros didn't look up from his wax tablet. "I met one of their agents yesterday. A man named Marcus Licinius. He offered me silver for my papers."
"They are buying more than papers," Kleon said quietly, his voice dropping as he glanced toward the path that led down to the harbor. "I was down at the custom house yesterday evening. Two ships arrived from Ephesus. They say the Roman tax collectors are stripping the temples of Greece. Not just the gold and silver, Eudoros. They are taking the statues, the old sundials, the astronomical spheres of Eudoxus... everything that can be crated and shipped to the villas of their senators."
"They are collectors of trophies," Eudoros said, his voice tightening. "They want the prestige of our learning, but they do not want to learn. They want the machine so they can boast to their neighbors that they own the universe, not because they care to understand how it turns."
"Be careful, my friend," Kleon warned, placing a hand on Eudoros’s arm. "They do not understand 'no.' If they cannot buy your machine, they will wait until the next fleet arrives and simply take it. General Sulla showed us thirty years ago what happens to cities that do not open their gates wide enough when Rome knocks."
"Sulla is dead," Eudoros said.
"But his nephews are not," Kleon replied. "And their hunger for Greek gold is greater than his ever was."
Eudoros stood up and gathered his instruments, placing them carefully back into their cedar compartments. The bright enthusiasm of the morning had been replaced by a cold, familiar weight in his chest. He looked out over the harbor, where the Roman merchantmen lay alongside the Rhodian triremes. They looked heavier, broader, and more predatory than the sleek Greek vessels. They did not have the elegant lines of the ships that had ruled the Aegean for centuries, but they had thick timbers and high sides that could withstand any storm.
"Let them come," Eudoros said, his jaw tightening. "They can buy my copper, and they can steal my bronze. But they cannot steal the mind that designed them. If they take the machine without the calculations, it will be nothing more than a box of useless teeth to them. A toy that tells them nothing."
"You underestimate them," Kleon said softly. "They do not need to understand the machine to own it. A conqueror does not need to know how to sing to appreciate the beauty of a captured lyre."
Eudoros did not reply. He bid the young scholar farewell and began the long descent back to the city.
The streets of Rhodes were crowded now. Macedonian merchants argued with Jewish traders over the price of dried figs; Syrian spice sellers called out from their small, shaded stalls; and Roman soldiers, identifiable by their short red cloaks and iron-studded sandals, strolled through the market squares with the easy, arrogant stride of men who knew they owned the cobblestones beneath their feet.
Eudoros kept his head down, clutching his cedar box tight against his ribs. He felt as though he were carrying a secret that was too heavy for one man to bear. The machine he was building was not merely an instrument; it was a testament. It was proof that the universe was orderly, rational, and beautiful—a direct contradiction to the chaos, violence, and greed that seemed to be swallowing the world around him.
When he reached his workshop, he found Philon sitting on the threshold, a copper-plate in his lap, working a long iron file with rhythmic, scraping strokes. The boy looked up, his face covered in a fine layer of copper dust that made his skin look green in the morning light.
"The Roman returned while you were gone, Master," Philon said, stopping his work.
Eudoros felt his breath catch. "Licinius? What did he want?"
"He didn't speak to me," Philon said, pointing with his file toward the interior of the shop. "But he left another man. A Greek from Alexandria. He is waiting for you inside."
Eudoros stepped into the cool, dark interior of the foundry. Sitting on a stool near the cold hearth was a thin man in a clean white chiton, his hair neatly oiled and trimmed in the Alexandrian style. He was looking at Eudoros’s drafting table, his fingers tracing the edge of one of the parchment plans with an air of professional curiosity.
"The geometry is correct," the stranger said without looking up. "But your ratios for the planet Venus are thirty years out of date. You are still using the calculations of Apollonius. He did not account for the retrogradation correctly."
Eudoros walked over to the table and took the parchment out of the man's hands, rolling it up with a deliberate, sharp snap. "And who are you to lecture me on the movements of Aphrodite?"
The man stood up, bowing with a smooth, theatrical grace that smelled of courtly intrigue and library dust. "My name is Andronicus of Cyrrhus. I am a builder of water-clocks and towers. Perhaps you have heard of my work in Athens? The Octagonal Tower of the Winds?"
Eudoros paused. He had indeed heard of the Tower of the Winds—a magnificent structure of white marble that featured eight sundials, a grand water-clock in its interior, and a bronze triton on its roof that turned with the wind. It was one of the wonders of the modern age, a brilliant marriage of art and engineering.
"I know your tower," Eudoros said, his tone softening slightly but remaining guarded. "It is a fine piece of work. But what does the master of Athens want with a simple bronze caster in Rhodes?"
Andronicus smiled, his eyes glinting in the shadow of the shop. "I am no longer in Athens, Eudoros. The Romans have... acquired my services. I am now the chief architect to Marcus Terentius Varro. It is my job to design the great library he is building in Rome."
He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "The Roman who came here yesterday—Licinius—is a brute. He knows only how to count coins and threaten with iron. But I know what you are doing here. I have seen the plans. I know what you are trying to build."
"Then you know it cannot be rushed," Eudoros said.
"It should not be built here at all," Andronicus said, leaning in. "Rhodes is a sinking ship, my friend. The Republic will tolerate your independence for a few more years, perhaps, but the moment they need your fleet or your harbor, they will take them. And your workshop will be burned to the ground to make charcoal for their sieges."
He reached out and touched the rolled parchment in Eudoros's hand. "Come to Rome with me. I can offer you a workshop three times the size of this one, with twenty apprentices and all the copper from Spain you could ever desire. You will have the protection of the Senate, and your name will be carved in marble alongside the great builders of Greece."
Eudoros looked at the elegant Alexandrian, then around his own small, dark foundry. He saw the soot-blackened walls, the simple tools he had inherited from his father, and the pile of scrap bronze in the corner. It was a poor place compared to the grand libraries of Alexandria or the marble palaces of Rome. But it was his.
"In Rome, I would be a client," Eudoros said flatly. "I would have to bow to some senator every morning and ask his permission before I cut a wheel. Here, I answer only to the geometry."
"Geometry does not have legions, Eudoros," Andronicus said, his smile fading. "The world is changing. The age of the independent city-state is over. If you want your machine to survive, you must put it in the hands of those who have the power to protect it."
"If I put it in their hands, they will use it to predict the propitious day for their next massacre," Eudoros said. "They will turn my stars into omens for their generals. I am building this to show the order of the cosmos, not to help some consul decide when to cross the Rubicon."
Andronicus sighed, shaking his head with a look of genuine pity. "You are an artist, Eudoros. A brilliant one. But you are a fool. You think you can lock the universe in a cedar box and keep the key for yourself. But the box is already being claimed."
He turned and walked toward the door, stopping on the threshold beside Philon. "Think on my offer. I will be at the harbor for another three days. After that, the winter storms will begin, and the shipping lanes to Italy will close. If you stay here, you will be nothing more than a footnote in the inventory of some Roman legionary's loot."
With that, Andronicus stepped out into the bright sunlight, leaving the workshop once more to the quiet scraping of Philon's file.
Eudoros stood alone in the center of his shop, the rolled parchment heavy in his hand. He looked down at the wax tablet containing the new lunar ratios he had gotten from Kleon. The numbers seemed smaller now, more fragile, like dry leaves that could be blown away by the first cold wind of autumn.
He walked over to his anvil, where the cast bronze plate lay waiting. He picked up his hammer and his steel punch.
"Philon," he called out, his voice cracking slightly with emotion.
"Yes, Master?" the boy asked, looking up from his file.
"Stop filing the edge. We need to mark the center."
Eudoros placed the point of his steel punch exactly in the middle of the bronze plate. He did not think of Rome, or of the legions, or of the Alexandrian architect who had sold his soul for marble workshops. He thought only of the moon, sliding through her epicycle on a pin and a slot, chasing her own shadow across the dark blue vault of the night.
He struck the punch with a single, sharp blow of his hammer. The metallic ring of the impact echoed through the small foundry, clear and bright, drowning out the distant, threatening murmur of the Roman ships in the harbor below.
