He didn't wait for Silas’s reply. He turned east and set off along the edge of the yawning trench, his heavy boots pounding against the hard-packed loam, while behind him, the green fire roared down from the canopy like a living thing, riding the cosmic gale into the heart of Orion's Grove.
The approach to Sub-Station Four-Alpha was shrouded in a dense, sulfurous smog that clung low to the ground. The sun—what little of its light penetrated the thick cosmic dust of the nebula—was reduced to a dim, angry red smudge near the western horizon.
The sub-station itself was a reinforced concrete bunker, built during the tail end of the Border Wars when the reserve had been used as a forward staging area by the Conservation Accord’s orbital fleet. Its thick, weather-beaten walls were half-covered in glowing blue moss, but the heavy blast doors at the front were freshly scorched.
Arlo slowed his pace, staying within the shadow of a row of dead Ironwood stumps that marked the perimeter of the bunker’s staging yard.
The main entrance door was standing ajar, its heavy pneumatic seals breached by a high-thermal cutting torch. Bright orange sparks were still flickering along the slagged edges of the titanium frame.
Arlo approached the doorway cautiously, his plasma cutter raised. The air inside the entrance vestibule was thick with the sharp, acrid smell of burnt copper and vaporized insulation—the distinct signature of fried control relays.
"Hello?" Arlo called out, his voice sounding small and muffled inside his helmet.
No answer. Only the rhythmic, hollow thump-thump-thump of a compromised air handling unit struggling to clear the smoke from the inner corridor.
He stepped over the threshold, his boots crunching on shattered glass and fragments of broken ceramic plating. The interior corridor was lit only by emergency red strip-lights that flickered erratically along the floorboards.
The main control room lay at the end of the hall. Through the reinforced viewport, Arlo could see the large, circular wheel of the manual hydraulic bypass valve.
It was chained shut.
A heavy, industrial-grade alloy lock had been wrapped three times around the iron spokes of the handwheel, binding it tightly to the structural steel I-beam behind it. The digital interface console beside the wheel was smashed beyond recognition, its glass screen shattered and its internal processing boards melted into a slag of fused silicon.
Arlo stepped up to the wheel, gripping the chain with his gloved hand. The alloy was freezing cold—cryo-welded. Whoever had locked this wheel didn't just want to turn off the water; they wanted to make sure it couldn't be turned back on without a plasma torch and an hour of heavy cutting.
"They really thought of everything," Arlo muttered, examining the lock.
He raised his plasma cutter, tuning the beam to its narrowest, highest-temperature setting. The tip of the cutter burst into a needle-thin arc of blinding white plasma. He brought the flame down onto the main link of the cryo-chain.
Sparks showered across his suit as the superheated beam hit the reinforced alloy. The metal groaned, turning dull red, then bright yellow, but the heat-dissipating properties of the cryo-treated chain were formidable. The cutter’s internal battery readout began to count down rapidly: thirty-eight percent... thirty-five... thirty-two...
"Come on," Arlo hissed, leaning his weight into the tool.
With a final, sharp crack, the link gave way, spraying liquid slag across the concrete floor. The heavy chain slackened and fell away, clattering against the deck.
Arlo slammed his hand onto the spokes of the iron wheel, throwing his full body weight against it to break the rusted seal of the internal valve stem. The iron wheel creaked, held for a terrifying second, then began to turn.
Squeeeeeak.
Deep within the bowels of the sub-station, heavy mechanical pumps groaned as ancient high-pressure lines filled with fluid. Through the floorboards, Arlo felt the sudden, massive vibration of thousands of gallons of water rushing through the main feeds toward the Great Trench.
Outside, the distant, muffled sound of high-pressure water cannon turrets firing to life echoed through the forest—a series of deep, rhythmic booms that rattled the bunker’s ceiling tiles.
Arlo let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding, stepping back from the wheel as his cutter’s battery indicator blinked red: twelve percent remaining.
"Silas," Arlo said, tapping his comm-bead. "The trench line water supply is restored. The sprayers are running."
The comm line did not answer with Silas’s voice. Instead, a harsh, flat tone filled his ear—a scrambled, military-grade encrypted signal.
"Firebreak Technician Arlo Finch," a cold, synthesized voice spoke through the static. "You have interfered with a restricted Accord tactical directive under Emergency Protocol Seven."
Arlo froze, his hand dropping slowly toward his belt. "Who is this? What tactical directive? You're burning down a protected ecological reserve!"
"The Aethelgard Reserve is no longer classified as an ecological asset," the voice replied, devoid of any emotion. "As of zero-six-hundred hours, the sector has been reclassified as an uncontained biological hazard under the authority of the High Command. Your interference has been logged. Stand down and prepare for asset neutralization."
Before Arlo could respond, a deafening explosion rocked the sub-station.
The reinforced roof of the control room collapsed inward in a shower of pulverized concrete and twisting rebar, throwing Arlo off his feet as a blinding sheet of white light tore through the gloom of Orion's Grove.
