"A Hegemony hunter-killer drone," Maren spat, her knuckles turning white on the yoke. "The interdictor didn't jump—it launched a stealth probe swarm into the shear boundary right as we entered."
"The drone has established a visual contact vector," Astraea warned. "It is deploying secondary target-tracking thrusters. Time to active lock: forty-five seconds."
"Can we outrun it through the debris?"
"In this density field? Unlikely," Astraea calculated calmly. "The drone possesses a higher power-to-weight ratio and four-axis vectoring nozzles. It will intercept us before we can clear the outer perimeter of the wrecks."
"Then we don't outrun it," Maren said, her mind racing as she locked her eyes on the massive, black bulk of the abandoned naval station at the center of the gyre. "We take cover."
"The interior space of the station's main docking bay appears structurally intact," Astraea offered, instantly catching her pilot's train of thought. "However, the bay doors are locked in a semi-closed position. Clearance width is approximately eleven meters."
"What’s the Meridian’s beam width with the sensor booms retracted?"
"Ten point two meters."
"Eight hundred millimeters of clearance," Maren grinned, though there was no humor in her eyes. "Plenty of room. Astraea, retract sensor booms, kill external running lights, and dump all remaining main-drive heat into the heat sinks. We’re going dark."
"Sensors retracting," the AI responded. "Switching to battery power. Primary heat sinks engaged. Temperature inside the cockpit will rise rapidly."
The ship went almost entirely dark. The bright tactical displays died, replaced by the faint, low-power green glow of the backup emergency flight instruments. The hum of the main fusion reactor faded into a quiet, dying whine as the magnetic containment throttled down to absolute idle. Outside, the bright blue engine plumes died, leaving the Meridian drifting on pure inertia, a cold black stone sliding through a graveyard of forgotten iron.
Maren grabbed the manual flight handles, her palms cold and slick with sweat. With the main sensor suite retracted, she had no automated collision avoidance, no terrain-following radar, and no flight path prediction lines. She was flying on manual control, using only her eyes, the dim green glow of her orientation gyro, and the faint, pale light of the sub-spatial lightning outside the viewport.
The Meridian glided past the crushed hull of the industrial lugger, missing its torn cargo boom by less than six meters. Maren kept her breathing shallow and rhythmic, feeling the gentle, heavy momentum of her ship as it slipped deeper into the ring of wrecks.
Behind them, the hunter-killer drone darted over the lugger’s stern, its red active-scanning eye sweeping across the metal plates like a bloodthirsty lantern. It paused for a fraction of a second, its long sensor vanes twitching as it probed the cold engine housing of the dead cargo ship, searching for a trace of fresh thermal waste.
Finding nothing, it pivoted with violent speed, its thrusters firing in short, sharp bursts as it locked onto the central station and began a broad, sweeping search pattern toward the core.
"It's searching by mass contrast," Maren whispered, her voice barely audible over the loud, heavy thrum of her own pulse pounding in her ears. "It knows we're in the field, but it can't distinguish our cold hull from the surrounding junk."
"It will, however, use active pinging once it reaches the central cluster," Astraea cautioned via the low-voltage internal comms. "At a range of five hundred meters, its active sonar will easily resolve our hull geometry, regardless of heat emissions."
"Not if we're inside the station's shadow," Maren said.
She lined up the Meridian’s bow with the narrow, jagged gap in the station’s primary docking bay. The bay doors were two massive slabs of reinforced blast-armor, frozen in place fifty years ago when the station lost power. The gap between them was a dark, toothy maw of torn steel and twisted hydraulic lines, barely wide enough to fit a light freighter, let alone a survey cutter with auxiliary gear strapped to her flanks.
"Speed is twelve knots," Maren muttered to herself, her thumb resting on the RCS thruster toggle. "Vector zero-four-five. Steady... steady..."
The station loomed massive through the forward glass, a towering mountain of dead iron that blotted out the pale silver light of the null-current. The dark opening of the docking bay rushed up to meet them.
Maren held her breath and gave the port RCS thruster a micro-burst to align the wings.
Meridian slipped into the gap.
For a terrifying split second, the universe shrank to the sound of metal scraping against metal. A jagged tooth of rusted steel along the starboard bay door caught the outer housing of the cutter's secondary heat sink, dragging across the alloy casing with a loud, screeching SCREEECH that echoed through the entire ship like a dying animal.
Maren winced, her muscles locked tight, but she kept her hands steady on the yoke, refusing to over-correct and slam the port wing into the opposite wall.
Then, the scraping stopped. The cutter slid smoothly through the narrow throat and broke out into the vast, cavernous interior of the station’s main flight deck.
It was a cavern of utter dark. Fifty years of stillness hung heavy in the airless bay. Suspended from the ceiling girders were the rusted skeletons of old atmospheric tenders and broken transport racks. Floating freely in the center of the bay were long-dead cargo containers, tool crates, and frozen fuel drums, hanging in zero-gravity like forgotten dust motes in a closed room.
Maren immediately fired the forward RCS thrusters, bringing the Meridian to a dead halt behind a massive, floating crane assembly near the far wall of the bay.
"We are inside," Astraea reported softly. "Structural shield density of the station's outer hull is blocking seventy-eight percent of ambient electromagnetic radiation. Passive concealment is optimal."
"Where's the drone?" Maren asked, switching the optical feed to the rear-facing hull camera.
On the small, grainy monitor, she watched the narrow slit of the docking bay entrance. A few seconds passed in agonizing silence.
Then, the sleek, black nose of the hunter-killer drone drifted into view outside the gap. Its long sensor vanes twitched nervously, light flickering across its dark carbon casing as its active radar array washed over the station's exterior. It hovered right outside the entrance, its red tracking lens staring directly into the narrow gap where the Meridian had slipped through.
Maren held her breath, her fingers frozen over the cold switches of her console.
The drone lingered for ten long seconds, its internal logic circuits weighing the risk of entering the tight, signal-jamming steel clutter of the station's interior against continuing its broad sweep of the open graveyard outside.
Ping.
The station's mechanical emergency knocker fired again, right above the docking bay roof. The sound slammed through the station's structural frame with a massive, deafening iron boom.
BOOM... boom... boom...
The massive vibration hit the drone’s sensitive acoustic sensors at point-blank range. The tiny machine twitched violently, its navigation system momentarily overwhelmed by the massive, low-frequency kinetic shockwave bouncing off the heavy armor plates. Its RCS thrusters fired wildly in a defensive reaction, backing the probe twenty meters away from the bay door as its threat-assessment subroutines processed the harmless, mechanical noise.
Re-evaluating the area as a dead structural hazard, the drone pivoted away, its bright red sensor eye swinging back toward the outer ring of wrecks. With a sudden, silent burst of blue ion fire, it accelerated away into the silver fog, continuing its search pattern along the far perimeter of the debris field.
Maren slowly let her breath out, a long, shaky exhale that fogged the lower edge of her visor. She slumped back into her seat, resting her forehead against her hand as the tension drained out of her legs.
"The drone has cleared our immediate radius," Astraea reported. "It is currently three kilometers away and moving on a outward search vector. Estimated time before it completes its sweep and exits the system: forty-eight minutes."
"Good," Maren breathed, her voice raspy. "Let it search the dead iron."
She sat up, pushing her visor back onto her head, and looked around the vast, silent cavern of the docking bay. The green emergency lights of the Meridian cast long, ghostly shadows across the dead tenders and floating cargo crates.
"System status, Astraea?"
"Heat sink saturation is at seventy-two percent," the computer answered. "We will need to vent heat before we can re-engage the primary fusion reactor. Starboard heat sink casing suffered minor cosmetic scoring during entry, but internal coolant lines remain intact."
"And the nav-core?"
"Data buffers are stable. However, Captain, we remain unanchored in an unmapped null-current. Our jump trajectory was entirely blind. We have no active spatial vectors back to Relay 884-Delta, and no established exit corridor ahead of us."
Maren nodded slowly, her eyes drifting to the main viewport. She reached out and touched the glass, feeling the faint, rhythmically decaying vibration of the station's mechanical knocker passing through the hull into her fingertips.
Ping.
"We're not lost, Astraea," Maren said quietly, staring out into the dark bay. "We're just where nobody else thought to look. This station didn't drop here by accident fifty years ago. It was an Imperial jump-anchor platform."
"Correct," Astraea said. "Designed to act as a localized spatial lighthouse for military fleets operating beyond the primary grid."
"Which means," Maren said, a small, resolute smile touching her lips, "somewhere inside the command core of this dead hunk of iron, there's an old Imperial navigational vault. And if that vault survived the crash... it has the old war charts."
She unlatched her safety harness, swung herself out of the pilot's chair, and reached for her suit helmet hanging on the bulkhead bracket behind her.
"Keep the ship dark and watch that drone," Maren commanded, pulling the heavy helmet over her head and locking the neck collar with a crisp, airtight clack. "I'm going aboard."
