CHAPTER ONE: Dust and Diesel

The wind in Cochise County did not blow; it scraped. It came off the southern playa carrying thirty-four percent silica and the greasy scent of long-dead salt lakes, scouring the yellow paint off the Kenworth’s hood until the fiberglass showed through like gray bone.

Cole Vance kept his thumb hooked over the spoke of the steering wheel, riding the ruts of the access road with the loose, practiced posture of a man who had spent thirty years letting heavy machinery do the vibrating for him. In the passenger seat, his toolbox—a battered steel chest bound in grease-darkened webbing—rattled a rhythmic, metallic syncopation against the cabin’s back wall. Every three miles, the chassis took a deep hit from a dry wash, and the suspension bottomed out with a dry, metal-on-metal clank that Cole felt directly in his lower lumbar.

He didn’t slow down. The sun was five degrees above the jagged, black teeth of the Chiricahua Mountains, and when it went behind them, the temperature in the high desert would drop thirty degrees in the span of a dozen breaths.

Up ahead, rising out of the heat shimmer like a needle dropped from heaven, was Tower Seven.

From forty miles off, it looked like a pencil line drawn by a shaky hand. From ten miles, it looked like a monument. Here, at three miles out, it was an impossibility. It rose six thousand feet into the thin, purple sky before its lattice began to blur into the permanent haze of the upper atmosphere, a web of gray-painted high-tensile steel that seemed to pull the very horizon upward toward its crown. At its base, the desert was littered with the detritus of a small, dirty city: triple-wide trailers, diesel tanks painted in reflective silver, mountains of slag, and the yellow crane arms that looked from this distance like grasshoppers frozen in amber.

Cole pulled the rig up to the gatehouse, the engine coughing a wet, oily breath as he killed the ignition. The silence that followed was sudden and heavy, broken only by the tick-tick-tick of the cooling manifold and the distant, rhythmic thump-shriek of a hydraulic tensioner working somewhere up on the third tier.

He climbed down, his boots sinking two inches into the fine alkali dust. His knees made a sound remarkably similar to the dry wash he’d just driven over.

"You're late," the gate guard said, not looking up from a screen that was coated in a thin layer of grit. The guard was young, wearing the clean, blue Nomex of a corporate contractor who still believed the brochures. He had a badge that read Sola-Step Industries pinned to a chest that hadn't yet been hollowed out by bad food and eighteen-hour shifts.

"The road through Wilcox has a crater in it the size of an ore wagon," Cole said. His voice sounded like it had been cleaned with a wire brush. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a laminated card, its edges frayed and grayed by sweat. "Vance. Structural weld lead. I’ve got a work order signed by the superintendent."

The guard took the card by the corner, as if Cole’s dust might be contagious, and swiped it through a reader that clicked twice before showing a green light. "You’re in Section Four, Vance. They’re setting the main gantry on the three-thousand-foot level. Superintendent’s in the double-wide behind the rigging yard. And they’re already behind."

"They're always behind," Cole said, taking his card back. "If they were on time, they wouldn't have called me."

He drove the Kenworth through the chain-link gates, past the rows of parked crew trucks and the massive, low-slung flatbeds carrying the pre-fabricated box girders. Each girder was forty feet of high-alloy titanium-steel, painted with red primer and marked with white stencil letters that read PROPERTY OF TRANS-ELEVATOR JOINT VENTURE. They looked like the ribs of some ancient, metal beast waiting to be assembled in the dirt.

The air here smelled different than the open desert. It smelled of ozone, burnt shielding gas, and the sour, cabbage-like odor of sulfur from the battery banks. It was the smell of every high-rise job Cole had ever worked, from the offshore rigs in the Gulf to the sky-platforms in Seattle, but magnified by a factor of ten. This wasn't just a building; it was the anchor. If Tower Seven didn't hold, the three thousand miles of carbon-fiber ribbon currently coiled in a warehouse in San Diego would never be unreeled. The elevator would remain a multi-billion-dollar dream, and the satellites would continue to look down on a world that couldn't reach them.

Cole parked near the rigging yard, grabbed his canvas kit bag, and swung his leg out of the cab. His hip gave a sharp, familiar bite. He ignored it, adjusting the heavy leather tool belt that hung low on his hips, its brass buckles green with oxidation.

The superintendent's trailer was pressurized against the dust, its air conditioner hummed a high, desperate whine that sounded like a turbine on its last legs. Inside, the air was cold enough to raise goosebumps and smelled of stale coffee and ammonia.

A man was standing over a digital blueprint table, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing arms covered in pale freckles and graying hair. This was Miller, an old iron boss who had survived three corporate mergers and two bankruptcies by knowing exactly when to lie and when to tell the truth.

"Vance," Miller said, not looking up from the blue-lit glass. "I thought you died in Salt Lake."

"I did," Cole said, dropping his kit bag onto a vinyl chair. "But the funeral was too expensive, so I came back to work."

Miller let out a short, dry bark that might have been a laugh. He tapped the screen, zooming in on a junction point where four massive box-girders converged like the spokes of a wagon wheel. "We’ve got a problem on the three-thousand-foot deck. The automatic crawlers can’t hold the seam. The wind is coming through the pass at forty knots, and it’s flexing the steel just enough to throw the laser guides off by three millimeters. Every time the robotic heads try to lay down a bead, the sensor aborts."

"So bypass the sensors," Cole said.

"We can't. The QA inspectors in Chicago are watching the feed in real-time. If the weld profile isn't perfect, they reject the joint. If we get another rejection, the holding company pulls our insurance, and we all go home to plant onions." Miller looked up, his eyes bloodshot and watery from too many hours under fluorescent lights. "I need hand-welds. Old-fashioned, dirty, multi-pass stick welding. We need to tie the gusset plates in before the night shift starts the tensioning sequence on the stay-cables."

Cole looked at the blueprint. The metal was four-inch plate, double-bevel joint. It would take twelve passes minimum, each one laid down with the precision of a surgeon, but under conditions that were more like a coal mine in a hurricane. "Who’s my partner?"

Miller’s face went slightly stiff. He picked up a plastic coffee cup, found it empty, and set it down again. "We’ve got a new crew from the Western Division. They brought their own gear."

"I don't care where they're from, Miller. Can they run a vertical-up bead without leaving slag pockets?"

"He doesn't run stick, Cole," Miller said, looking out the window toward the base of the tower. "He doesn't have to. He’s running the new rig."

Before Cole could ask what that meant, the trailer door whistled open, letting in a swirl of hot, dusty air and a tall, slender figure who looked like he’d lost his way on the road to a sci-fi convention.

The kid couldn't have been more than twenty-four. He wore a white, form-fitting flight suit made of some synthetic material that didn't have a single spot of grease on it. Under his arm, he carried a helmet with a gold-mirrored visor that reflected Cole’s dusty flannel shirt and grease-stained jeans back at him like a funhouse mirror.

"Vance," the kid said, extending a gloved hand that looked entirely too clean. "I'm Luke Vance—no relation, I checked the registry. I'm the pilot for the Mark IV Exo-Assembly unit."

Cole didn't take the hand. He looked at the glove, then up at the kid’s face. Luke had a jawline that looked like it had been designed by a marketing department and a sweep of blonde hair that was miraculously untouched by the desert wind.

"A pilot," Cole said, his voice dropping an octave. "We’re building a tower, kid. Not flying to the moon."

"The Mark IV is a precision construction platform," Luke said, his voice carrying the smooth, rehearsed confidence of a company representative at an trade show. He set the helmet on the blueprints, right over the junction Cole had been studying. "It’s got twenty-two thousand foot-pounds of torque in each hydraulic shoulder and an integrated multi-phase arc-torch that can lay down thirty inches of weld per minute with zero porosity. It does the work of four ironworkers in half the time, and I don't need a scaffold to do it."

Cole looked at Miller. "Tell me this is a joke."

"It's not a joke," Miller said, his eyes fixed on his desk. "The company bought three of the rigs last month. They want a field-test on the high steel. If the pilot project works, they’re phasing out the manual berths on the next five towers."

"The next five towers can go to hell," Cole said. He turned to Luke, his boots clicking hard on the linoleum. "Listen to me, junior. I don't care if that suit of yours can make toast and sing the national anthem. At three thousand feet, when the wind comes off the canyon, the steel doesn't care about your torque. It moves. It breathes. If you don't know how to feel the heat through your soles, you’re going to tear the bolt-holes out of the web."

Luke smiled, a quick, flashing thing that didn't reach his eyes. "The suit has thirty-two haptic sensors in each sole, Mr. Vance. I can feel a vibration of less than five microns. And I don't get tired. I don't get cramps. And I don't have to take a blowtorch to my joints in the morning to get them moving."

He looked down at Cole’s right leg, which was currently locked straight to keep the hip from popping.

The silence in the trailer became very loud.

Cole took a step closer, his broad shoulders blocking out the light from the window. He was three inches shorter than the kid, but he had the thick, square build of a man who had spent thirty years lifting things that didn't want to be lifted. "We start at five. You put your fancy tin suit on, and you stay on your side of the web. If you drop so much as a washer, I’m going to throw your gold-plated helmet off the side and you after it. You understand?"

Luke didn't flinch. He picked up his helmet, tucked it back under his arm, and gave Cole a nod that was just short of respectful. "See you on the iron, old man."

When the door clicked shut behind him, Cole turned to Miller. "Where did you find him?"

"Sola-Step recruiting office in Phoenix," Miller said, sighing. "He’s top of his class on the simulator. He’s got eighteen hundred hours of high-altitude virtual rigging."

"Virtual," Cole spat. He grabbed his kit bag. "A simulator doesn't have a three-hundred-foot drop if you slip on the grease. It doesn't have bird-shat on the girders. It doesn't have real wind."

"He’s what the board wants, Cole," Miller said softly. "The board thinks you guys are too slow. Too expensive. Too many pensions."

"We're still here," Cole said.

"For now," Miller said. "Just go up there and make sure the joint holds. The crane is picking up the first girder in twenty minutes."

Cole walked out of the trailer into the late afternoon heat. The dust had settled slightly, but the sky had turned a deep, bruised purple. He walked over to the hoist—the massive, skeleton-like elevator that ran up the outside of the tower’s south face.

It was a simple cage of steel mesh, suspended by three thick cables that went up into the darkness. A dozen ironworkers were already inside, their faces gray with dust, their eyes red-rimmed and tired. They looked like soldiers returning from a front line that didn't move.

Cole stepped in, his boots clanging on the steel floor.

A moment later, Luke Vance walked up the ramp. He was wearing the lower half of his exosuit now—a pair of massive, motorized leg-braces that bolted around his hips and shins, ending in wide, hydraulic feet that looked like the claws of some mechanical bird. The hydraulic pump on his lower back let out a high-pitched, metallic whine every time he took a step, a sound that made every ironworker in the cage turn and look.

Nobody said a word. They just shifted their weight, moving away from him until there was a clear, three-foot circle of empty space around the white suit.

The operator pulled the lever. The cage gate slammed shut with a sound like a rifle shot, and then, with a wet, grease-scented groan of the cables, the lift began to climb.

Below them, the desert began to flatten out. The trucks became beetles; the trailers became matchboxes; the vast, empty expanse of the Arizona desert opened up like a yellow map under the setting sun. The wind started immediately, whistling through the mesh of the cage, cold and sharp, smelling of pine trees from the high mountains forty miles away.

Cole kept his eyes on the steel of the tower as it slid past. Every bolt-head, every gusset, every diagonal brace was something he knew. He’d built forty of these towers before the elevator project even had a name. He knew the way the metal creaked when it got cold, the way it expanded in the noon sun until the holes didn't line up by half an inch, the way it shook when the crane released a load.

He looked over at Luke. The kid was looking at a small screen mounted inside his wrist-guard, his thumb tapping the glass with a light, rapid rhythm. He wasn't looking at the steel. He was looking at the data.

"First time?" Cole asked, his voice carrying over the wind.

Luke didn't look up from his screen. "I’ve done this lift three hundred times."

"In a box in Phoenix," Cole said.

"The physics engine is ninety-nine percent accurate, Mr. Vance."

Cole reached into his pocket, pulled out a small, gray piece of gravel he’d picked up from the yard, and tossed it through the mesh of the cage. It vanished instantly into the three-thousand-foot drop.

"The wind doesn't read the physics engine," Cole said.

The lift slowed down, its cables groaning as the brakes caught. The cage bounced twice, then settled against the landing platform of the three-thousand-foot level.

The door slid open. The wind here was different. It didn't just blow; it had a voice, a high, thin whistle that sounded like someone blowing across the top of a giant, empty bottle. It pushed against Cole’s chest like a flat hand, trying to nudge him back into the cage.

He stepped out onto the open platform, his safety lanyard clicking onto the static line with a sound that was the most important thing he’d hear all day.

Behind him, the hydraulic legs of Luke’s suit let out a loud, mechanical hiss as they stepped onto the steel, the wide pads clicking into place with a heavy, magnetic thrum.

The sun was gone now. The desert below was a sea of black ink, and above them, the stars were starting to come out—sharp, cold, and entirely too close.

"All right, junior," Cole said, pulling his welding hood down over his eyes. "Let's see what your tin can can do."


CHAPTER TWO: The Spire in the Sun

The three-thousand-foot deck did not feel like solid ground; it felt like a raft anchored in the middle of a cold, rushing river. The river was the air itself, pouring out of the high passes of the Chiricahuas and rushing toward the low-pressure sinks of the Mexican desert to the south. It hummed through the open lattice of Tower Seven, a vibration that started in the soles of Cole’s boots, traveled up his shins, and rattled his teeth together if he kept his jaw clenched too tight.

Cole stood on the outer flange of a primary load-bearing horizontal, his safety lanyard snapped to a two-inch steel cable that ran the length of the bay. He didn't look down. Looking down was for tourists and people who wanted to find a quick way to the bottom without using the lift. Instead, he looked at the steel.

The girder they were preparing to tie in was suspended forty feet above them, hanging from the dual hooks of the derrick crane that sat on the utility platform another five hundred feet up. The forty-ton piece of high-tensile titanium-steel swayed in the wind like a pendulum, its red-painted flanks catching the last, bloody light of the sunset. It looked less like a building component and more like a massive, blunt spearhead waiting to be plunged into the heart of the tower.

"Easy on the swing, boys," Cole muttered into his throat-mic. The radio in his ear crackled with static, a dry, frying-pan sound that was the constant soundtrack to life on the high iron.

"We got a gust coming over the ridge, Cole," the voice of the derrick operator came back, sounding tiny and far away. "She’s sailing on me. I’ve got the brakes locked, but the cable’s got twenty feet of whip in it."

"Keep her steady," Cole said, his eyes tracking the sway. "If she hits the column, she’ll shear the alignment pins right off."

To his left, a loud, pneumatic thump signaled the arrival of the Mark IV. Luke Vance had stepped out onto the horizontal flange, the massive, white-painted limbs of his exosuit gleaming in the yellow work-lights that were bolted to the tower’s uprights. The suit’s leg-braces were thick as telephone poles, powered by heavy hydraulic cylinders that hissed and groaned with every adjustment of Luke’s weight. On his back, a lithium-ion battery pack hummed a high-pitched, clean note that sounded entirely out of place among the dirty diesel-shudder of the tower’s generators.

The kid looked like a white beetle clinging to a spiderweb. Through the gold-mirrored visor of his helmet, Cole couldn't see his face, but the posture of the suit was cocky—hip cocked slightly to one side, the heavy, three-fingered mechanical hands resting on the hydraulic gantry-mounts of his thighs.

"Hey, Vance," Luke’s voice came through the local channel. It was clear, free of the static that plagued Cole’s older analog radio, bypassed by some high-band corporate frequency Sola-Step had installed for their pilots. "The derrick’s off by four inches on the east hoist. I’m going to grab the guide line and haul her in."

"You do that and you'll pull yourself off the iron, kid," Cole said, not turning his head. "That’s forty tons of steel moving at three knots. You don't muscle a load like that. You wait for the lull."

"My suit’s rated for five tons of static pull, old-timer," Luke said. "And the anchors on these boots are magnetic. I’m not going anywhere."

Before Cole could tell him exactly what forty tons of kinetic energy did to five tons of static rating, the suit’s hydraulic pumps screeched. Luke took two wide, heavy steps toward the edge of the flange, his magnetic boots releasing from the steel with a wet, sucking clack-clack before locking down again with the force of small pile-drivers. He reached out with his right arm—a thick, articulated assembly of carbon-fiber and chrome-plated steel—and caught the dangling steel tag-line that trailed from the end of the suspended girder.

The moment the line went taut, the wind caught the girder.

It wasn't a gust; it was a steady, heavy push that came out of the darkness like a wall. The forty-ton steel box-girder didn't just sway; it surged. The tag-line snapped straight with a sound like a pistol shot, the three-inch nylon rope stretching until it was thin as a pencil.

The exosuit’s warning klaxons began to wail, a high, rhythmic chirping that Cole could hear even through his heavy leather welding hood. Luke’s right leg buckled as the hydraulics tried to compensate for the sudden, massive lateral pull. The magnetic lock on his left boot gave way with a screech of sliding steel, leaving a bright, silver scar across the red primer of the horizontal beam.

"Release the line!" Cole shouted, his voice cracking with the strain. "Dump it, kid!"

But the glove on the Mark IV was designed for high-pressure gripping; the solenoids in the fingers had locked under the sudden load, a safety feature meant to prevent dropped tools that had now become a tether to a forty-ton pendulum. Luke was dragged three feet toward the edge, his right foot hanging over three thousand feet of empty air, the metal frame of the suit twisting under a torque it was never designed to handle.

Cole didn't think about his hip. He didn't think about the twenty-nine hundred feet of nothingness beneath the flange. He lunged forward, his heavy, grease-darkened leather boots sliding along the steel flange with a practiced, shuffling gait that kept his center of gravity low. He reached into his tool belt, his fingers finding the hickory handle of his two-pound spud wrench in a fraction of a second.

He didn't try to pull the kid back. Instead, he drove the tapered, pointed handle of the wrench into the emergency release lever on the back of the suit’s forearm assembly—a small, recessed brass valve that Miller had pointed out during the morning safety brief as the only manual bypass on the new-generation rigs.

Cole slammed his weight down on the wrench.

The hydraulic pressure in the suit’s arm vented with a deafening hiss-shriek, spraying a fine mist of warm, red mineral oil across Cole’s chest and face. The mechanical fingers of the glove lost their grip instantly, the tag-line whipping away into the darkness like a startled snake.

The suit collapsed backward, its heavy steel torso slamming into the horizontal flange with a hollow, metallic boom that shook the entire deck. Luke lay there for a moment, the white paint on his shoulder scarred by gray grease, his gold visor splattered with hydraulic fluid.

The wind whistled through the lattice, cold and indifferent, carrying the smell of ozone and wet oil away into the night.

Cole stood over him, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps that tasted of dust and sulfur. He wiped a streak of red oil from his cheek with the back of his gloved hand, then looked down at his spud wrench, which was now slightly bent at the tip.

"That's forty dollars' worth of tool," Cole said, his voice flat. "And you owe me a clean shirt."

Through the visor, Cole could hear Luke’s breathing—fast, shallow, and loud. The cockiness was gone, replaced by the raw, rattling gasp of a kid who had just looked into the dark and realized there wasn't a reset button on the simulator.

"The... the solenoid jammed," Luke whispered, his voice shaking through the local comms. "The haptic feedback... it didn't register the slip on the left heel. It should have compensated."

"The suit doesn't know when it's about to die, kid," Cole said. He reached down, grabbed the shoulder of the white flight suit, and hauled the kid up until the mechanical legs clicked into a self-supporting lock. "But you should. Now get your rig back on the alignment line. The crane’s bringing the girder back in, and if we aren't ready to pin it this time, Miller’s going to hire two guys from the union hall who actually know how to use their hands."

Luke didn't say anything. He slowly raised his left arm, looking at the dead hydraulic cylinder that hung limp from his elbow. The clean, white synthetic fabric of his suit was ruined, stained with the greasy red oil that was still dripping from the bypassed valve.

"I can't run the left arm," Luke said. "The pressure's gone."

"Then you use your right," Cole said, pulling his welding hood back down over his face. "And you watch my lead. I’m going to set the drift-pins. When I give you the sign, you use that right arm to drive them home. If you miss, I’m going to use your head as a wedge."

The derrick crane was already swinging the massive girder back into the bay, the red steel silhouette blocking out the stars as it descended. Below them, the lights of the construction yard had shrunk to a tiny, yellow grid, a reminder of how high they had climbed, and how far they had to fall.

Cole took his position at the junction point, his boots locked against the flange, his safety lanyard taut against his spine. He held his drift-pin—a eight-inch cylinder of hardened steel—over the first alignment hole, his heavy ball-peen hammer raised and ready.

"Now," Cole muttered. "Let's see if that one-armed tin can of yours can still hit a nail."
