Vance adjusted his cuffs. He was a man who looked like he had been manufactured by an institutional supplier for regional museums—gray hair, gray tweed, and an expression of perpetual, mildly disappointed compromise.

"Because 026 was found at the top of the stratum," Vance said. It was a tiny speck of red wax. Not modern paraffin, but medieval sealing wax—vermilion mixed with beeswax and rosin. It was brittle, almost black around the edges, but at its heart, protected from the water by the seal of the lead cut, the crimson pigment was as bright as fresh arterial blood.

I stared at it for a long time.

A pilgrim badge wasn't supposed to have wax on it. "Stephen?"

The voice was thin, marred by static and the hollow resonance of a cheap mobile line. It wasn't Vance, and it wasn't anyone from the museum administration.

"Who is this?" I asked.

"Don't log the alloy ratio on 026," the voice said. It was a woman’s voice, raspy, strained, as though she were speaking from a cold room or trying not to wake someone sleeping in the next bed. "If Vance sees the antimony content, he'll know where the scrap metal came from."

My throat tightened. "Sarah?"

A burst of static flooded the line—a high, whining squeal like radio interference over water.

"Contested," Vance read aloud. His voice was flat, carrying the dry, papery timbre of a civil servant reading an eviction notice. "That is not a standard provenance classification for an in-house find, Stephen."

"It's an accurate classification," I said, without looking up from my tray of solvent swabs. "The stratigraphy is compromised. The surface corrosion shows evidence of recent mechanical disturbance before Miller brought it in, and the maker's mark on the reverse doesn't exist in the Guildhall register. If the Port Authority asks for our legal title, 'contested' is the only term that keeps us out of court."

Vance closed the ledger with a heavy, muted thud. He set his palm flat on the blue cloth cover, as if holding down a loose sheet of paper in a high wind.

"The Port Authority is not going to ask," he said quietly. "The Port Authority has already signed off on the development rights for the embankment site. The excavation was a salvage operation conducted under emergency heritage provisions. The board requires clean, unambiguous records. They do not require speculative commentary regarding trade guilds."

"The mark is a split anvil, Arthur. Sarah logged the same mark in the Tower Wharf report twenty-six years ago."

Vance’s hand stiffened on the ledger cover. The knuckles turned a pale, bloodless yellow. For three seconds, the only sound in the room was the low, rhythmic hum of the solvent extraction hood in the corner.

"Sarah was an exceptional field worker," Vance said, his tone dropping into that carefully modulated register he used when addressing donor committees, "but her interpretations toward the end of her tenure were... overly narrative. She was looking for patterns where there were only irregularities in local casting technique. Cheap lead alloy behaves unpredictably in mud. You know this."

"She was looking at the antimony," I said.

Vance stood very still. The gray morning light from the pavement grate hit the side of his cheek, casting deep, purple shadows in the hollows under his eyes.

Vance looked at the grey lump in the tray for a moment, then turned back to the desk. He took a gold fountain pen from his breast pocket, unscrewed the cap with two deliberate turns, and drew a neat, thin line through my word—Contested—at the bottom of page 140. Above it, in his small, cramped, nineteenth-century hand, he wrote: Thames Embankment Gravels (Context Unstratified).

"Catalog 025 by noon," he said, replacing the cap on his pen. "And Stephen—do not leave the building for lunch. The Chairman of the Accessions Committee wants to see the preliminary register before the afternoon session."

He turned and walked out, his rubber-soled shoes clicking with a sharp, dry cadence against the threshold before fading down the long, tiled corridor toward the administrative wing.


Left alone, I pulled Accession 025 under the ring-light of the microscope.

It was in far worse shape than the Becket badge. Where 026 had retained its general outline despite the corrosion, 025 looked like an object that had been caught in a iron press or run over by the wheel of a heavy timber wagon. The lead had folded back on itself, twisting the central figure into a tight, metallic knot.

I picked up a fine camel-hair brush, dipped it in a lukewarm solution of deionized water and non-ionic detergent, and began brushing away the thick, greasy silt that filled the folds of the casting.

The mud of the Thames is an effective preservative, but it is also a relentless thief. St. Jude Thaddeus. The apostle of lost causes; the saint invoked when all human hope had failed and only a miracle could reverse an outcome.

It was an unusual choice for a cheap lead souvenir in late fourteenth-century London. While Becket, St. Erkenwald, and Our Lady of Walsingham had thousands of badges poured daily in the foundries along Bishopsgate, St. Jude was rarely depicted on mass-produced lead tokens. It was small—no larger than three millimeters across—and deeply impressed into the metal. It had not been stamped after casting; it had been cut directly into the face of the mold itself, appearing in raised, positive relief on the back of the finished badge.

It was not the split anvil of Accession 026.

It was a pair of shears, open at a sixty-degree angle, with a tiny, five-pointed star positioned between the blades.


I sat back, rubbing my eyes with the back of my hand.

The open shears were the mark of the Tailors' and Armorers' Guild of London, but the five-pointed star—the mullet—was an addition not recognized in any published roll of medieval pewterers' marks. In her unpublished field notes, Sarah had drawn that exact symbol on the margins of a page dated October 14, 1998. Beside the drawing, she had written three words in blue ballpoint ink: The Tailor's Mold.

I reached under the bench and pulled out the metal stationery cabinet where I kept my private files—the papers Vance didn't audit during his quarterly inspections.

At the back of the bottom drawer, tucked inside a faded yellow folder labeled Thames Survey - Comparative Data, was a photocopied sheet of paper. The copy was faint, the lines blurred by an old matrix printer, but the text was legible:

The year Henry VIII’s commissioners descended upon the London monasteries with heavy hammers, iron bars, and melting pots. The lead roofs of the Charterhouse, St. Bartholomew’s, and the Priory of the Holy Trinity had been stripped, melted down into heavy pigs on the church floors, and branded with the royal stamp.

If Accession 025 was cast from monastic roof lead in 1538, then it was not a medieval pilgrim badge at all. It was an illegal token—a piece of black-market scrap turned into a pseudo-relic during the greatest confiscation of church property in English history. And if it was cast in 1538, it meant the entire "Thames Trench Deposit" was not a medieval devotional deposit, but an illicit stash hidden in the silt by someone who was melting down holy goods for private gain—or systematically faking medieval provenance for modern trade.

I looked back through the microscope optics.

Inside the fold of St. Jude's cloak, where the metal had been compressed, I noticed something else. A thin, dark line that wasn't lead, pewter, or river mud.

It was a fiber.

I picked up my finest micro-tweezers—titanium-tipped, with teeth so small they could hold an individual pollen grain—and squeezed the jaws tight around the dark thread protruding from the lead seam.

I pulled gently.

The fiber yielded with a tiny, barely perceptible tug, coming free from the cold metal where it had been trapped when the molten alloy was poured into the stone mold six centuries ago—or six decades ago.

It was a single strand of wool, roughly twelve millimeters long. It wasn't grey or brown like raw medieval sheep's fleece. Under the white light of the lamp, it shone with a deep, brilliant, unfaded cobalt blue.

I placed the fiber onto a glass slide, applied a drop of mounting medium, and pressed a cover slip down over it. Then I swung the secondary high-power microscope into position and focused the lens at four-hundred-times magnification.

The structure of the fiber was distinct. The overlapping cuticular scales of sheep wool were clearly visible along the shaft, but the pigment wasn't vegetable woad or indigo, which typically settled into uneven, blotchy deposits within the cortex of medieval textiles. The blue color was completely uniform, penetrating every cell of the fiber from core to scale.

It was a synthetic dye.

My hands didn't shake, but a cold, hard stillness settled over my fingers.

The lead was medieval—or at least contained the antimony signature of six-hundred-year-old furnace slag. The iconography was late fourteenth century. The river silt on the surface was genuine Thames mud, complete with crushed Corbicula shell fragments and anaerobic iron sulfides.

But the wool trapped inside the central fold of the metal—trapped during the casting process while the lead was still liquid enough to grip the thread without burning it to ash—was modern.

Accession 025 had not been lost in the river during the reign of Richard II. It had not even been melted down during the Dissolution in 1538.

It had been cast in the twentieth century.

Someone had taken high-antimony medieval lead, poured it into an authentic limestone mold—or a high-precision electrotype replica—and buried the cold castings in the anaerobic silt of the riverbank to age. They had used modern woolen rags to wipe the hot mold between pours.

And Vance knew.

He didn't just know; he was rushing the cataloging through the reverse ledger to establish a legal paper trail before the object reached an external laboratory for isotopic testing or textile analysis. If the highest numbers—the items allegedly pulled from the top of the mud—were logged as genuine, the lower numbers would inherit that authenticity by institutional authority.

I pulled the blue ledger back toward me.

Page 141 was completely blank, its cream-colored surface smooth and clean under the yellow lamp light.

I uncapped my fountain pen. The black ink pooled slightly at the tip of the nib, dark and shiny as a beetle's wing.

My phone on the desk vibrated twice. A short, sharp double pulse.

I didn't answer it. I didn't even look at the screen.

I leaned over page 141 and wrote:

I thought of Sarah's notebook—the shadow across the folded paper, the blue ballpoint ink, the long silence that had followed her departure from the department. I thought of the voice on the phone telling me not to log the alloy ratio.

I lowered the nib to the paper and wrote in clean, block letters:

I took Accession 025 from the tray, placed it inside a small glass specimen jar, and sealed the screw-cap tightly with a strip of white Parafilm. I took the glass slide containing the blue woolen thread, slipped it into my pocket, and sat down to wait for Vance to return.
