In the early twentieth century, the Aral Sea fishery produced tens of thousands of tons of high-quality fish annually, accounting for nearly ten percent of the Soviet Union's entire freshwater catch. The fish were processed on-site, packed in ice harvested from the sea during the winter, and shipped in refrigerated rail cars to Moscow, Leningrad, and beyond. The iconic tins of Aral herring and sturgeon were a staple of the Soviet pantry, prized for their flavor and quality. For the residents of Aralsk and Muynak, the sea was a generous provider, offering secure employment, high wages, and a sense of pride. The harbors were forest of masts, alive with the shouts of fishermen, the gulls crying overhead, and the constant, reassuring aroma of smoked fish and saltwater.

Beyond the commercial fisheries, the sea supported a unique way of life. The inhabitants of the coast, a diverse mix of Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, and Uzbeks, developed a deep cultural connection to the water. They were people of both the steppe and the sea, combining pastoral traditions of livestock herding with the maritime skills of navigation and fishing.
