They reached the end of the corridor, where it opened up into a wide, circular chamber with a vaulted ceiling. This was the heart of Apex Outpost Nine. "The alternative is freezing to death in the dark," Silas said, his voice hard. "We need to know what we're dealing with. Throw the switch."
Jax nodded. He gripped the heavy handle, braced himself, and slammed it upward into the "ON" position.
For a long, tense second, nothing happened. The silence in the dome was absolute, broken only by the distant, muffled scream of the wind outside.
Then, deep beneath their feet, a massive machine groaned. The concrete floor vibrated as the auxiliary generator hummed to life. High above them, the emergency lighting strips along the ceiling flickered once, twice, and then settled into a low, dim red glow. The air vents hissed as the dormant circulation fans began to spin, drawing in the cold, stale air and pushing it through the heating elements.
On the main command console, the monitor screen blinked, displaying a series of rapid, scrolling lines of green system code.
Silas stood back as the system booted, his eyes darting to the corpse of Dr. Evelyn Thorne. In the dim red emergency light, her serene smile looked even more pronounced, casting long, eerie shadows across her pale cheeks.
"System is up," Fisher announced, stepping up to the console. His fingers flew across the keyboard, his motions precise and rapid. "I'm bypassing the user login. The primary database is corrupted, but the local sector cache is still readable. Let's see what the last entry was."
The screen flickered, and a single, low-resolution video file began to play.
The image was shaky, filmed from a stationary security camera mounted in the corner of the command dome. The room was brightly lit in the recording, the standard white fluorescent lights casting a clean, sterile glow over the desks.
In the center of the frame stood a young man, his orange uniform torn and stained with dark, greasy patches of oil. His face was wild with terror, his eyes wide and bloodshot as he yelled at someone off-camera.
"We can't let it out!" the man screamed, his voice distorted by the low-quality audio of the recording. "You don't understand what it does! It's in the water, it's in the air vents! It's already in us!"
"Calm down, Ronald," a voice spoke from off-camera. It was Dr. Evelyn Thorne, her tone cool and measured, completely devoid of the panic that had gripped the young man. "The containment was successful. We’ve isolated the strain. There is no danger to the surface."
"You're lying!" Ronald shrieked. He lunged toward the console, brandishing a heavy metal wrench. "I saw what happened to the others! I saw what they did to themselves! I'm shutting it down. I'm shutting the whole damn mountain down!"
In the video, Ronald turned and slammed the wrench into the primary communication terminal, sending a shower of sparks into the air. The screen on the recording flickered, the image distorting with static.
Then, the camera angle shifted as if the room had taken a violent impact. Dr. Thorne stepped into the frame, her hand holding a small, silver pneumatic injector. She approached Ronald from behind, her movements fluid and calm, almost mechanical. Before he could turn, she pressed the device against his neck.
The young man stiffened, his eyes rolling back in his head. The wrench slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the metal floor. Within seconds, his legs gave out, and he collapsed into a heap at her feet.
Dr. Thorne stood over him for a long moment, her expression unchanging. She didn't look down at his body. Instead, she turned her head directly toward the security camera, staring straight into the lens with that same, serene smile Silas had seen on her corpse.
"The summit is silent now," she whispered, her voice clear and chillingly soft. "There is no way down."
The video cut to static.
The command dome was silent once more, the low red emergency lights casting a bloody hue over the faces of the rescue team.
"Well," Jax said slowly, his voice heavy in the quiet room. "That explains the arm in the door."
"That was Ronald," Maeve said, her voice shaking slightly as she looked from the dark screen to the frozen body of the chief scientist. "She sedated him, and then she... she must have dragged him to the airlock. Or he tried to crawl out before the sedation took full effect."
"And then she sat down here, cut the power, and took the same drug herself," Fisher added, his eyes wide as he stared at the console. "But why? What did he mean when he said 'it's in us'?"
Silas didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the terminal, his boots clicking softly on the floor. He looked at the static on the monitor, then down at the encrypted silver drive Fisher had found.
"We need to find out what they were digging up on this mountain," Silas said, his voice flat and cold as the ice outside. "And we need to find it fast. Because if whatever they found is still in this facility..."
He paused, his attention caught by a faint, rhythmic scratching sound coming from the ceiling vents directly above their heads.
It sounded like fingernails dragging across cold steel.
