Julian paused, his hand on the brass door handle. He stood silent for three long seconds, pretending to weigh the offer. In reality, this was exactly the arrangement he had planned for. A guard behind a glass window was infinitely easier to manage than a guard standing three feet behind him.

"The partition is double-paned glass?" Julian asked, turning back slowly.

"Yes, reinforced, acoustic-grade glass," Sterling nodded eagerly. "No sound or dust can pass between the anteroom and the vault."

"And the camera feed?"

"We can angle the internal camera to focus solely on the primary entry portal, rather than the working surface of the sarcophagus," Sterling said, desperate to appease the temperamental genius. "I will personally authorize a temporary security variance. Your work must not be compromised."

Julian let his expression soften into a reluctant, grudging acceptance. He walked back to the desk and set his briefcase down once more.

"Very well," Julian said. "But I must insist on a preliminary physical inspection of the site tonight. I need to calibrate my equipment to the vault’s specific temperature and humidity levels before I begin the actual treatment tomorrow evening."

"Of course, of course," Sterling said, reaching for his desk phone. "I will call the security desk now and have them prepare the access log for Sub-Level Four. We can descend immediately."

As Sterling dialed the internal extension, Julian turned away to adjust his glasses. Underneath the desk, out of the curator’s line of sight, his fingers reached into his pocket and touched the small, silver pocket watch. He pressed a tiny button on the side of the casing, activating a silent, low-frequency digital scanner that began to map the local wireless frequencies in the room.

The heist was not just about stealing the sarcophagus; it was about understanding the nervous system of the building that housed it. As Sterling spoke to the night watch commander, Julian’s device was already intercepting the encrypted Bluetooth handshakes from the curator’s desk terminal, collecting the first pieces of the digital puzzle that would eventually grant him total control over the vault’s environment.

"It is all arranged," Sterling said, hanging up the phone with a smile that was more like a grimace of relief. "The guards are expecting us. Let us go down into the dark, Dr. Vance."

"Indeed," Julian murmured, picking up his leather briefcase, the amber bottle of Vance-Formula 4 clinking softly against the metal tools inside. "Let us see what the sands of time have left for us."
