Jax didn't answer. He dried off, threw on a faded Navy EOD t-shirt and a pair of uniform trousers, and headed toward the superstructure. The ship’s briefing room was located deep within the steel labyrinth of the vessel, smelling of stale coffee, damp carpets, and ozone from the electronics.

Jax leaned his hip against the heavy steel workbench, studying her. "I am not just a civilian, Commander," Daniela said, her hazel eyes flashing with fire. Jax stepped closer, his imposing frame towering over her, but Daniela didn't back down. She stood her ground, her chin tilted upward, her gaze locked onto his with an unyielding determination.

He walked over to a heavy wooden crate marked TRAINING AIDS and pulled out a inert, cutaway model of a Type 93 naval mine. It was a rusted, spiked iron sphere, about three feet in diameter, with several lead horns protruding from its top half. He set it on the workbench between them with a heavy, hollow metallic thud.
"This is what’s waiting for us down there," Jax said, pointing to the lead horns. "Inside each of these horns is a glass vial filled with sulfuric acid. When a ship’s hull hits one of these horns, the lead bends, the glass breaks, and the acid pours into a chemical cell, generating an electrical current that triggers the detonator. Eighty years in saltwater does funny things to lead, Dr. Mercer. It makes it soft. It makes it brittle. Sometimes, the lead gets so thin that the pressure of the water itself is almost enough to crush it."
He tapped the side of the cutaway mine. "Inside the main casing is over two hundred pounds of Type 98 explosive—a nasty mix of trinitrotoluene and hexanitrodiphenylamine. When it decays, it forms metallic picrates. These salts are so sensitive that a drop of water, a speck of rust, or a vibration from an underwater thruster can detonate them. If one goes, they all go. And if they go, the shockwave will travel through the water at five thousand feet per second. It will hit us before we can even blink."
Daniela looked at the model, her expression serious but entirely devoid of the panic Jax had hoped to elicit. She reached out and touched one of the inert lead horns, her fingers tracing the curve of the metal.

"Commander Vance," Grif said quietly, pointing to his tablet. "Weather report just updated. We’ve got a low-pressure system building to the south. It’s going to push a heavy ground swell into the channel by Thursday. If we’re going to do this, we have to start tomorrow. Once the surge starts moving those mines, we won't be able to get within fifty yards of the wreck."
Jax looked from Grif to Daniela, then down at the yellowing documents spread across the workbench. He hated variables. He hated politics. But most of all, he hated the realization that the stubborn woman standing in front of him was absolutely right.
"Fine," Jax said, his voice tight. "We dive tomorrow at zero-six-hundred. But we do this my way. Dr. Mercer, you will wear a full-face mask with integrated comms. You will stay behind me at all times. You do not touch anything, you do not move any debris, and you do not take your eyes off my swim fins. She paused at the hatch, looking back over her shoulder. "That’s why I like it, Commander. It’s the only place where the rules are absolute."
With a soft metallic clang, the hatch closed behind her, leaving Jax alone on the hot, salt-encrusted deck.
