CHAPTER ONE: The Final Shift

The atmosphere inside a saturation chamber smells like warm rubber, wet neoprene, and stale, re-breathed bacon. After twenty-six days locked inside a steel tube the size of a delivery van, those smells didn't just linger; they soaked into the enamel of your teeth.

John "Mac" MacIntyre sat on the lower bunk, carefully threading an oily lace through the eyelet of his work boot. The air in the living chamber was squeezed to thirteen atmospheres—roughly four hundred feet of seawater pressing against the hull from the outside—which meant the air density was so thick you could feel it when you waved your hand. It was like living inside a bowl of cold gravy.

Across the cramped aisle, Julian Vance was staring intently at a plastic playing card, trying to balance it on the lip of a stainless steel mug.

"Don't breathe on it," Jules muttered, his voice sounding like Donald Duck on helium. High-pressure heliox—the mix of helium and oxygen required to keep divers alive at depth—stripped every ounce of timber from the human vocal cords. No matter how tough, weathered, or battle-hardened a North Sea diver was, the gas turned him into a children’s cartoon character the second he opened his mouth.

"I’m not breathing on it," Mac replied, his own squeaky tenor contrasting absurdly with his thick gray beard and broad shoulders. "I’m lacing my boot. If your card falls, it’s because the life support system is pushing gas through the scrubber at sixty liters a minute."

"It's the vibration from the moonpool winches," Sully called out from the wet pot, the tiny transition chamber where the dive suits hung to dry. Sullivan was the third member of the dive team, a hulking Scotsman who looked like he’d been carved out of granite and fed exclusively on haggis. "And they're still dipping us?" Jules asked, finally abandoning the card trick as the ship rolled slightly, sending the deck playing cards fluttering to the floor. "We’re four hours away from starting our final decompression. In thirty-six hours we could be sipping lukewarm lager in Aberdeen."

"Key word being 'could,'" Mac said, tightening the lace and double-knotting it. "The rig on the wellhead is behind schedule. The operator wants the hot-tap valve torqued down before the swell gets too big for the vessel to maintain station over the hole. One last dip. Six hours on the bottom, then we lock back in, turn off the work lights, and let the techs bleed the pressure off us for the next three days."

"The last bell run," Jules sighed, rubbing his face. "I hate that phrase. It’s bad luck."

"Everything is bad luck to you, Vance," Sully snorted, squeezing his bulk into the narrow space between the bunks to grab his harness. "Passing under a ladder, black cats, whistle on the dive deck, turning the bell hatch counter-clockwise on a Tuesday. You’re worse than my grandmother."

"My grandmother wasn't sitting four hundred feet under the North Sea in November," Jules retorted. "She was in Dundee, watching game shows."

The squawk of the chamber intercom interrupted them. The speaker produced a sharp crackle before the squeaky, electronically pitch-corrected voice of Dave "Gonzo" Miller, the Diving Supervisor on duty, echoed through the habitat. Topside used a unscrambler to turn the divers' helium squeaks into human speech, but the playback inside the habitat was raw helium audio, making the supervisor sound like an irritated Chipmunk.

"Chamber Three, this is Dive Control. How are we doing in there, gentlemen?"

Mac leaned toward the wall-mounted microphone, pressing the push-to-talk button. "We’re alive, Gonzo. Smells like Sully’s socks, but otherwise standard operational parameters. What’s the surface story?"

"It’s getting a bit lively up top," Gonzo’s unscrambled voice came back over the speaker, lowered into a artificial baritone. "Green water coming over the bow occasionally. We’ve got a window, though. Sea State six, wind holding at twenty-eight knots from the northwest. The swell is four meters, but the DP system is keeping us right over the target within half a meter. Company man wants that spool piece bolted down tonight so we can secure the seabed before the gale properly hits."

"How long's the window?" Mac asked.

"Six hours, maybe seven," Gonzo replied. "If the sea state goes above five meters, or the wind hits forty sustained, we have to pull the plug and abort. So let’s make this quick and tidy. Bell Nine is mated to Chamber Three. Gas checks are clear. Hot water plant is online and running at forty-two degrees. Lock-out is scheduled for eighteen-hundred hours."

"Copy that, Control," Mac said. "We’re suiting up now."

He released the switch and looked at the other two. The familiar routine took over, cutting through the low-grade claustrophobia that always built up toward the end of a four-week stint. Saturation diving was ninety percent boredom, nine percent manual labor in pitch darkness, and one percent raw, unadulterated cold.

Mac pulled on his thermal under-suit—a thick, quilted garment known affectionately as a "woolly bear." It felt like wearing a sleeping bag with legs. Over that went the heavy-duty neoprene hot-water suit. "Jules, you’re on the bell today," Mac said, pulling his rubber wrist seals over his sleeves. "Sully and I are going outside."

"Thank God," Jules muttered, though there was a twitch of tension in his neck. Being the bellman meant staying inside the diving bell while the other two went out on the seabed. The bellman tended the divers' individual umbilical lines, managed the gas flow, monitored the radio communications, and acted as the rescue diver if someone got into trouble outside. It was warm, dry, and immensely boring—until something went wrong, at which point it became the most stress-filled job on the planet.

Sully was already strapping his diving harness over his chest, tightening the heavy stainless steel buckles. Attached to the back of the harness was a pair of emergency bail-out cylinders—twin fifty-liter tanks filled with high-pressure gas. It was the diver's absolute safety net: if the main gas supply from the surface was cut off, a turn of a valve gave them roughly five to eight minutes of breathing gas to get back inside the bell.

"Check your quick-releases," Mac reminded them, slipping into his own harness. He checked Sully’s valves, ensuring the secondary manifold was locked tight and the pressure gauges read full. Sully turned around and did the same for Mac, his thick fingers double-checking the emergency regulators with practiced efficiency. They had done this hundreds of times together. Confidence in saturation didn't come from bravado; it came from repetition so absolute that it replaced fear with muscle memory.

"Chamber Three to Control," Mac spoke into the mic again. "Divers suited and checked. Commencing trunking equalization."

"Copy, Mac. Equalizing trunking between Chamber Three and Bell Nine now."

A sharp, deafening hiss filled the narrow space between the chamber and the bell as high-pressure gas flooded the short connecting tunnel. The pressure inside the living module and the spherical diving bell was being balanced so the hatch could be opened. The steel around them groaned, a deep, metallic clunk echoing through the frame as the pressure equalization valve seated.

Outside the porthole, the small indicator dial swung into the green.

"Trunking equalized," Gonzo announced. "You are clear to open the hatch."

Sully grabbed the heavy bronze ratchet handle on the interior hatch wheel and hauled it back. With a dull suction sound, the heavy seal broke. He swung the door downward, revealing the dark, narrow circular passage leading up into the belly of Diving Bell Nine.

Bell Nine was a three-meter-wide sphere of steel, three inches thick, lined with a maze of brass valves, copper pipes, emergency oxygen scrubbers, depth gauges, and coiled umbilical hoses. It was designed to withstand immense pressure, both from the inside out and from the outside in. To the uninitiated, it looked like a Victorian boiler room crammed inside an astronaut's capsule.

One by one, the three men crawled through the hatch into the bell.

Mac went first, pulling himself up into the cramped interior and taking his seat on the narrow metal bench that ran around the perimeter. He reached down and helped haul up the heavy gear bags containing their torque wrenches, video cameras, and hydraulic lines. Sully followed, his bulk filling half the sphere, followed by Jules, who immediately began setting up the bellman’s console.

The space was tight. With three grown men in full diving suits, heavy harness rigs, and helmets resting on their laps, there wasn't enough room to extend an arm fully in any direction.

Mac reached down and pulled the lower bell hatch shut, spinning the locking wheel until the seal was compressed tight against the seat. This was the bottom door—the boundary between the gas inside the bell and the ocean outside. Once they reached the seabed, they would pressurize the bell slightly higher than the surrounding water pressure, pop this door open, and step directly into the Atlantic.

"Lower hatch closed and locked," Mac reported over the bell comms.

"Copy, Bell Nine," came Gonzo's voice from top. "Mating clamp releasing now."

A heavy mechanical clatter reverberated through the steel hull as the hydraulic clamp holding the bell to the vessel’s saturation system disengaged. For a brief second, the bell swung slightly on its top guide wires, suspended inside the moonpool—the vertical shaft cutting straight through the center of the support ship's hull, open to the sea below.

Through the tiny bottom viewports, Mac could see the churn of white water in the moonpool. The ship was rolling. Even deep inside the ship's belly, the ocean’s surface energy was obvious. The water level in the trunking sloshed rhythmically, rising and falling three feet with every wave that passed under the hull.

"Bridge reports dynamic positioning is stable," Gonzo’s voice crackled through their helmet earpieces. "Launch winch operational. Commencing descent of Bell Nine. Good luck down there, boys."

"Copy that, top," Mac said, pulling his Kirby Morgan 37 helmet onto his shoulders. He reached down to lock the neck dam into place, feeling the familiar latch click securely against the neck ring. "Let's go buy some lager."

The main winch whined, a high-pitched electric scream that cut through the thick air.

With a soft, heavy drop, Bell Nine plunged through the surface layer of the moonpool. The churn of daylight and foam outside the viewports vanished in an instant, replaced by a deep, chaotic green that darkened rapidly as the winch cable paid out, lowering them foot by foot down into the freezing black waters of the North Sea.


CHAPTER TWO: Four Hundred Feet Below

The descent into the North Sea was not a smooth glide; it was a rhythmic, jarring drop punctuated by the clatter of the guide wire winches and the groaning of three-inch steel shell under changing thermal loads. Outside the small acrylic viewports of Bell Nine, the bright green water of the surface moonpool rapidly deepened into murky teal, then cobalt blue, and finally into absolute, liquid pitch.

Mac kept his eyes on the analog depth gauge mounted beside the gas manifold. The thick black needle swept past fifty feet, one hundred, two hundred. With every hundred feet of descent, the ocean added another three atmospheres of hydrostatic force against the bell’s hull, but inside, the internal pressure was already matched to the target depth. The air was dry, thick, and metallic, carrying the faint warmth generated by the scrubber fans pushing gas through the soda-lime canisters.

"Passing three hundred," Mac reported into his helmet microphone. His voice, unscrambled in his own earpiece, sounded thin and absurd, like a child trying to speak through a pipe. "Outer temperature is dropping. Sitting at six degrees Celsius."

"Copy, Bell Nine," Gonzo’s voice returned from Dive Control, echoing through the small sphere with the flat, synthesized clarity of the topside unscrambler. "You’re looking good on the line. Cable tension is stable. We’ve got you on the subsea sonar. You’re about fifty feet off the guide frame."

Beside Mac, Sully adjusted his weight, the heavy brass components of his dive harness clinking against the steel frame of the bench. Space was so confined that every movement required a coordinated dance between the three men. If Sully wanted to reach his side-block valve, Jules had to lean his shoulder back toward the emergency oxygen rack; if Mac needed to check his depth recorder, Sully had to tuck his knees inward. It was an environment designed by engineers who viewed human comfort as an unnecessary luxury in oilfield logistics.

"Hot water coming down," Jules said, tapping the dial on the water distribution manifold above his head. He adjusted the brass gate valve, sending forty-two-degree water flowing down the secondary line into Mac’s and Sully’s suits.

A wave of intense, glorious heat flooded through the internal rubber channels of Mac’s suit, flushing over his chest, shoulders, and legs before trickling out through the wrist and ankle exhaust ports. It was the absolute lifeline of saturation diving. Without that continuous flow of heated water, the helium gas trapped in their tissues would strip the thermal energy from their core within minutes, inducing violent shivering, disorientation, and fatal hypothermia.

"Ah, lovely," Sully grunted into his chin-mic. "Like sitting in a warm bath while someone throws gravel at your head."

"Keep an eye on the pressure gauge, Jules," Mac said, watching the needle settle on four hundred feet. "We don't want the hot water line air-locking when we open the bottom hatch."

"Pressure’s locked at thirteen bar," Jules replied, his fingers tracing the stainless steel supply lines with automatic precision. He was thirty-two, eight years younger than Mac, but he had spent enough time in saturation to possess the slow, deliberate movements of a veteran. Panicked movements in a bell cost energy, consumed oxygen, and created mistakes. In four hundred feet of seawater, a mistake usually took five seconds to happen and three hours to fix—if you were lucky enough to survive it.

Outside the porthole, the darkness was suddenly sliced by a beam of high-intensity light. Mac leaned forward, pressing his forehead against the heavy frame.

The bell’s exterior LED lamps had cut through the void, illuminating the ghostly, silent world of the seabed. At four hundred feet below the surface, the ocean was devoid of natural sunlight. What revealed itself in the bright white floodlight was a barren expanse of gray silt and fine sediment, scoured flat by centuries of deep currents. Swirling through the water like dust motes in an abandoned attic were tiny orange amphipods and floating flecks of organic debris known as marine snow.

Directly ahead lay the subsea template—a massive, sixty-ton structure of painted yellow steel pipes, valves, and guide posts anchored into the continental shelf. It looked like the skeletal foundation of a sunken skyscraper, overgrown with barnacles, tubeworms, and delicate soft corals that swayed rhythmically in the tide.

"Target in sight," Mac announced to Dive Control. "Bell Nine is hovering approximately fifteen feet off the seabed, right over the work frame."

"Roger that, Bell Nine," Gonzo replied from four hundred feet above. "Dynamic positioning is holding ship’s head into the swell. We are maintaining station within a point-five meter offset. You are cleared to equalize trunking and drop the bottom door."

Mac turned to Sully. "Ready, big man?"

"Born ready, Mac. Let’s go get cold."

Mac reached down to the equalization valve at the base of the lower hatch. "Equalizing bell to ambient sea pressure."

He opened the valve slightly. A sharp, roaring hiss filled the sphere as high-pressure heliox was vented into the short collar between the inner and outer doors, balancing the gas pressure inside the bell perfectly with the pressure of the ocean outside. The needle on the differential gauge dropped to zero.

Mac grabbed the heavy bronze locking ring on the inner hatch, turned it counter-clockwise until the steel dogs disengaged, and lifted the door upward. He swung it on its heavy arm, securing it into the overhead locking catch.

Below them lay the bottom door—the final barrier between their dry steel world and the Atlantic.

Sully leaned over, unlatched the heavy outer hatch, and pushed it down. It swung out into the open sea, hanging suspended beneath the bell.

The ocean did not rush in.

Because the gas pressure inside Bell Nine was calibrated to match the ambient water pressure at four hundred feet, the water met the open hatch and simply stopped. It sat inside the bottom trunking ring like a slab of dark, shimmering black glass, rising and falling no more than an inch with the slight pressure fluctuations of the bell’s suspension cable. The ambient smell inside the sphere shifted instantly; the dry, recycled smell of rubber and soda-lime was cut through by the sharp, metallic tang of cold salt water, iodine, and raw, iron seabed silt.

"Bottom hatch open," Mac reported, staring down at the dark water floating inches beneath his boots. "Water level stable."

"Copy that, diver one," Gonzo said. "Check your umbilicals and prepare for lockout."

Mac sat on the edge of the open hatch, his boots hovering just above the water line. He adjusted his helmet, twisting the air supply valve on his side-block to increase the free-flow oxygen mixture, then checked the brass lock on his waist harness. Behind him, Jules was already feeding the thick yellow rubber umbilical cord off the storage rack. The umbilical was Mac’s lifeline—a three-inch bundle wrapping together his breathing gas line, hot water hose, communications wire, video feed, and depth transducer line.

"Tending line one," Jules said, locking his hand around the heavy sheath. "You’re clear, Mac."

Mac lowered his heavy, lead-weighted boots into the water.

The transition was instant. The dry warmth of the bell vanished as his lower legs entered the freezing North Sea. Even through the thick layer of neoprene and the circulating stream of heated water, the bitter cold pressed against his skin like iron clamps. He let his body slide down through the open hatch, dropping into the dark water beneath the bell.

For a second, Mac suspended himself on the bell’s lower frame, letting his buoyancy settle. The weight of his Kirby Morgan helmet, heavy boots, and back-mounted emergency gas cylinders evaporated into the dark water. Around him, the universe shrank to the brilliant white cone of his helmet light and the dark frame of the bell suspended above him like a metallic moon.

"Diver one on the deck," Mac said, his voice echoing in his helmet. He planted his boots into the soft ocean floor. Fine gray silt bloomed outward in silent clouds around his ankles.

"Copy, Mac," Jules’s squeaky voice came through the comms. "Umbilical paying out nicely. Sully, you're up."

Above Mac, the large, rounded shape of Sullivan dropped through the hatch, splashing softly into the water column. Sully descended slowly, his heavy boots settling into the mud three feet from Mac. He carried a heavy nylon gear bag stuffed with hydraulic torque wrenches, brass shackles, and guide lines.

"Bloody hell, it's pitch," Sully muttered, adjusting his helmet lamp until the bright light cut through the suspended silt. "Visibility’s maybe three meters. Tide’s pushing from the east."

"Let's move to the spool," Mac said, taking his first slow, lumbering step across the seabed.

Walking on the North Sea floor at four hundred feet was like walking on the moon in a lead suit. The water density created immense drag, requiring deliberate, heavy pushes from the legs, while the heavy weight of the thermal suit made rapid movement impossible. Every step was a calculated effort, every breath inside the helmet a loud, rhythmic hiss of gas valve and exhaust seal.

Behind them, Jules stood in the bell hatch, tending the two heavy yellow umbilical lines with expert, rhythmic hands, feeding out line foot by foot so the divers didn't get tangled in the sharp steel superstructure of the wellhead.

Mac reached the base of the subsea template. The structure towered over them—a maze of five-inch thick steel pipes painted high-visibility yellow, though years of marine growth and deep-sea grime had turned much of it into a matted, dark gray surface.

The job tonight was straightforward on paper, but exhausting in reality. A new production line had been tied into the seabed manifold, and Mac and Sully needed to secure a three-hundred-pound spool piece valve onto the flange, torque the sixteen heavy grade-eight steel bolts to specification, and connect the hydraulic control lines before the surface storm made holding position impossible for the ship above.

"There's the flange," Sully said, pointing his helmet light toward a heavy circular pipe protruding from the manifold structure. "Looks clean enough, but the blind flange is still bolted down."

"Right," Mac said, pulling a heavy pneumatic impact wrench from the gear bag Sully held out. "Let's get these cover bolts off. Topside, diver one is at the work site, commencing bolt removal on the blind flange."

"Copy, diver one," Gonzo replied. "Work clock is running. You’ve got three hours on the bottom before we need to pull you back in for the storm ceiling."

Mac leaned his shoulder against the guide frame, wedged his boots securely into the lower steel rung, and fitted the massive socket over the first bolt head. He squeezed the trigger.

A deep, drumming vibration echoed through the water—thug-thug-thug-thug—as the hydraulic tool hammered against the sea-crusted steel. Cloud after cloud of fine rust and marine growth burst into the water, obscuring Mac’s vision until the bottom current swept it away. The bolt loosened with a sharp metallic crack that traveled straight through the bones of Mac’s hands and arms.

"One down," Mac grunted, moving the heavy tool to the next bolt. "Fifteen to go."

Beside him, Sully was setting up the secondary rigging line, hooking a high-capacity air winch to the overhead guide frame to support the weight of the massive valve spool when it was lowered from the surface vessel.

"How’s the sea looking up top, Jules?" Sully asked over the local bell line, taking a moment to wipe silt off his faceplate with his thick, gloved thumb.

In the bell, Jules leaned over the upper rim of the bottom hatch, looking at the telemetry readouts on his control screen. "Vessel’s pitching a bit more now. The DP system is working hard. Thruster output is up to sixty percent. You can feel the heave coming down the main wire."

Mac paused his wrench, feeling it too.

Through the thick rubber soles of his boots and the steel structure he was leaning against, he could feel a faint, rhythmic tug. Four hundred feet above, the DSV Deep Endeavour was pitching in rising four-meter swells. That motion traveled all the way down the thousands of feet of steel cable, lift wires, and hose bundles that connected the ship to the bottom world. The heavy steel weight hanging above them moved in a slow, hypnotic vertical dance—rising two feet, falling two feet, over and over again in rhythm with the North Sea surface.

"It's getting noisy up there," Mac observed, placing his socket on the fourth bolt and squeezing the trigger again. The hydraulic hammer chittered in the gloom.

"Wind’s holding at thirty-two knots," Gonzo’s voice interjected, calm and clinical. "We’re monitoring the pitch and roll angles closely. No swell limits breached yet. Keep pushing, boys. The sooner that valve is sealed, the sooner we can haul Bell Nine back into the garage."

"Roger," Mac said, leaning into the tool.

He worked with rhythmic, tireless efficiency. One bolt, two bolts, three bolts. The cold water surrounding his hands made his fingers feel thick and numb despite the hot water circulating through his gloves. In saturation, fatigue was a stealthy enemy. The sheer density of the heliox gas meant that every breath took twice as much respiratory work as breathing normal air at sea level. A diver’s lungs worked constantly, pumping heavy gas in and out, building up trace amounts of carbon dioxide if he pushed his exertion too hard.

Mac pulled his hands back for a second, taking three deep, measured breaths through his helmet regulator. The gas whistled loudly in his ears.

"Take it easy, Mac," Sully said, placing a heavy hand on Mac’s shoulder harness. "We’re ahead of the clock. Let me take the bottom four bolts."

"I've got it," Mac said, shaking his head inside the helmet. "Just hold the flange puller steady so the face doesn't drop into the mud when the last stud comes free."

"Stubborn old bastard," Sully muttered under his breath, though his squeaky helium voice stripped all the venom from the words. He unclipped a heavy steel clamp from his harness and attached it to the face plate, holding the three-hundred-pound blind cover in place.

Mac reset the socket and drove the impact wrench against the final bolt. The nut spun off the threaded stud and dropped softly into the gray silt below.

"Blind flange free," Mac reported, letting the heavy hydraulic wrench hang from its lanyard.

Together, Mac and Sully gripped the steel plate, hauling it back from the pipe opening. A small plume of dark oil-water emulsion bled out of the unsealed pipe, curling upward into the clear seawater like black ink before dissolving into the current.

Behind the dark cloud, the smooth, silver face of the flange gasket seat gleamed in the white glare of their helmet lights.

"Seat looks clean," Mac said, inspecting the machined groove with his gloved index finger. "No scoring, no pitting. Ready for the spool piece."

"Control, this is Bell Nine," Jules called out from the bell dry chamber. "Divers are ready for the spool lower. Send down the guide line."
