The farm country around his town of Oak Creek was quiet. The only major power loop in the county belonged to the Public Service Company of Indiana, carrying hundred-kilovolt lines south toward Indianapolis. But those lines didn't carry voice signals. The town of Oak Creek consisted of four blocks of red-brick storefronts arranged along Route 28, anchored by a feed store at one end and the county courthouse at the other. In 1946, the war felt both far away and everywhere at once. Gold star banners still hung in the parlor windows of white frame houses, and the curb outside the farm supply store was lined with men in patched overalls talking about the price of corn, the lack of rain, and the slow return of boys from the Pacific.

Arthur parked his truck in front of Vance Electronics & Repair, a narrow shop tucked between a butcher’s shop and an auto body garage. The display window featured a cardboard cutout of a smiling woman holding a RCA Victor tabletop radio, surrounded by a assortment of batteries, aerial kits, and dry-cell lanterns.

A bell chimed above the door as Arthur stepped inside. The air was rich with the smell of wood stain, pipe tobacco, and heated transformer varnish.

"If it’s another burnt-out toaster, Arthur, tell 'em to throw it in the river," a voice called out from behind a counter piled high with schematic sheets and wooden cabinets.

Doc Vance stepped out, wiping his wire-rimmed spectacles with a yellowed handkerchief. Doc was sixty, thin as a lath, with a ring of white hair around a scalp freckled by decades of working under unshaded desk lamps. He had run the local telegraph office before the Great War, spent ten years installing theater sound systems in Chicago, and finally retired to Oak Creek to fix whatever broke.

"No toasters today, Doc," Arthur said, placing a canvas bag on the counter. "Just Mrs. Gable’s Zenith. She needs a new volume pot and a 6SQ7 tube. Plays fine now, but the original tube was microphonic as a tin can."

Doc peered into the bag, nodding approval. "You always were too neat with your solder joints, Pendelton. Army spoiled you. A farmer just wants the box to make noise so he knows the world hasn't ended."

Arthur pulled the ruined 6J5 tube from his coat pocket and set it gently on the wooden glass counter between them. "I came to see if you had any of these in stock. RCA or Sylvania, doesn't matter, as long as the glass is clean."

Doc picked up the damaged tube, holding it close to his eyes before lifting his glasses to get a better look. He squinted at the purple discoloration on the interior wall.

"Well, now," Doc said slowly. "What did you feed this poor thing? Lightning?"

"I had it on the shortwave rig last night," Arthur said, keeping his voice casual. "Hooked to the high wire. Around five in the evening."

Doc turned the tube in his fingers, his expression shifting from amusement to professional curiosity. He took a small jeweler’s loupe from his vest pocket and pressed it to his eye. Doc dropped the tube back onto the counter with a dull clink. He reached under the counter, pulled out an old stoneware mug, took a sip of cold coffee, and set it down hard. "Carrier-current? Out here? The power company doesn't use high-frequency carrier systems south of Kokomo. They rely on standard telegraph relays along the railroad right-of-way."

"What about the new relay tower they built out by the creek last spring?" Arthur asked. "The one with the concrete footings and the chain-link fence?"

Doc paused, his fingers tapping an irregular rhythm against the glass counter. "That’s high-tension control, Arthur. Rural Electrification Administration stuff. Federal money. They don't report to the local county board, and they certainly don't ask my advice about interference."

"They were running testing last night," Arthur said, testing the water. " picked up a pulse signal. Heavy modulation. Then a voice reading off coordinates."

Doc leaned forward, his friendly manner hardening slightly. He looked past Arthur toward the shop window, where a black Ford sedan was rolling slowly down Route 28, its tires crunching on the loose gravel. The car didn't stop; it continued past the feed store toward the open highway.

"Arthur," Doc said softly, dropping his voice an octave. "You're a good technician. You were a good sergeant. But the war’s over, and the country’s full of things that were built while you were in Europe that aren't on any civilian map. Some of those things belong to the Army. Some belong to the phone company. And some belong to outfits that don't put their names on the door."

"I’m just trying to keep my receiver from blowing up every time somebody turns on a transmitter," Arthur said.

"Then build yourself a trap," Doc snapped, reaching under the counter and pulling down a blue cardboard box containing a fresh RCA 6J5 tube. He pushed it across the counter. "Put a low-pass filter on your antenna line. Cut off everything below three megacycles. If you don't listen to it, it won't fry your set."

"How much for the tube?"

"Fifty cents," Doc said, turning his back to sort through a rack of carbon resistors. "And take Mrs. Gable's radio back to her. She’s been complaining to her nephew that she’s missing her evening stories."

Arthur placed two quarter-dollar coins on the glass. "Doc? What’s 7-0-9?"

Doc’s back remained turned. The old man froze for a fraction of a second, his hand hovering over a drawer marked 1/2 Watt Capacitors, before he resumed his sorting.

"It’s a number, Arthur," Doc said without turning around. "Just a number. Go home and fix your tractor."


The ride back to the farm was long and hot. The dust from the road coated Arthur’s face and throat, sticking to the sweat on his neck. The Allis-Chalmers chugged along at twelve miles an hour, its engine a steady, mechanical thrum that did nothing to clear his thoughts.

Doc Vance knew something. Or at least, he recognized the symptoms. Doc had been in the business long enough to know when the federal government was stepping into local airwaves. During the war, the Office of Censorship and the War Production Board had locked down the radio spectrum with an iron fist, but now, in the summer of ’46, things were supposed to be returning to normal. Hams were back on the air, commercial stations were expanding, and the airwaves belonged to the public again.

Except for whatever was pulsing through the dry Indiana air at five o'clock.

When Arthur reached the farm, he didn't head for the house or the fields. He parked the tractor near the wellhead, carried his bag into the barn, and pulled the wooden door almost shut, leaving only a sliver of sunlight to illuminate the interior.

He set the new RCA tube on the bench, but he didn't install it. Instead, he pulled out a drawer beneath the workbench where he kept his military manuals—fat, heavy volumes bound in olive-drab cloth, stamped with RESTRICTED across their covers.

He flipped through TM 11-486, Electrical Communication systems Technical Manual, stopping at the section covering low-frequency carrier systems. He ran his finger down the columns of technical specifications. Standard power-line carrier equipment operated between thirty and two hundred kilocycles. They used small vacuum tubes, modest power outputs, and were designed to stay confined within the physical copper of the power lines.

What he had heard yesterday was different. It had bridged the gap between the power line and his aerial wire through raw induction—radiating out into the atmosphere like a standard transmitter, but carrying the signature of a line-bound system.

"Grid point seven-zero-nine," he muttered, opening his notebook to the fresh page.

He grabbed a county map from the wall—a faded blue line print showing property boundaries, creek beds, and section lines. He laid it flat on the workbench, weighing down the corners with a burnt transformer and a heavy iron horseshoe.

The town of Oak Creek was in Section 14. His farm sat in Section 22. To the east, running through Section 9, was the newly cleared right-of-way for the high-voltage transmission lines installed the previous year.

He took a red grease pencil and drew a line along the course of the power grid. Section 7 lay five miles north, where the limestone ridges began to rise out of the flat farmland. Section 7, sub-point 09.

That was the old limestone quarry. It had been abandoned since the mid-thirties when the water table broke through the lower pit, flooding the machinery and leaving a lake of deep, stagnant blue water surrounded by thirty-foot stone walls.

Arthur stared at the red mark on the map. The quarry was surrounded by thick scrub oak and hickory, miles from the main highway, connected to the county road only by a rutted logging path that had been blocked by a wooden gate for as long as he could remember.

A bluebottle fly buzzed against the dirty glass of the barn window, its wings making a dry, frantic vibration.

Arthur looked at his homebuilt receiver. The empty tube socket stared back at him like a black eye.

He picked up the new 6J5 tube, aligned the keyway on the central Bakelite post with the notch in the socket, and pressed it firmly into place until it seated with a clean, rubbery snap. He didn't connect the main antenna wire. Instead, he took a twenty-foot spool of insulated copper hookup wire, stripped the end with his pocketknife, and wrapped it around the primary coil of an inductive pickup loop—a small, hand-wound coil designed to sense electromagnetic fields without making direct physical contact with the circuit.

He plugged the receiver’s power cord into the outlet wall, reached for the heavy toggle switch, and flipped it.

The transformer hummed to life. The tubes began their slow, orange warm-up.

Arthur put on his headphones—a pair of heavy, leather-padded Baldwin headsets he had worn through two years of European operations. He slowly turned the main tuning dial, bypassing the commercial stations, steering the receiver down into the muddy, low-frequency region below the broadcast band.

The static was different today. It wasn't the dry crackle of heat. It was a low, rhythmic thrumming—a steady hum-click, hum-click that matched the seventy-two-cycle pulse of heavy electrical machinery.

He turned the gain knob up. The sound filled his ears, so sharp and heavy it felt like someone tapping a wooden mallet against the side of his skull.

Through the rhythm of the pulse, he heard it again. Not a voice this time, but a series of rapid, automated signal bursts—a high-speed machine code, far faster than any human operator could key by hand. It sounded like a mechanical loom weaving threads of high-frequency noise into the air.

Suddenly, the signal stopped.

The silence in the headphones was absolute—no static, no atmospheric hiss, no hum. It was the dead, artificial quiet of a transmitter that had been shunted into a dummy load.

Then came a sharp, clear tone—a single 1000-cycle beep that lasted precisely one second.

Arthur sat frozen at the bench, his hand resting on the metal frame of the receiver.

Outside, the sound of a heavy motor broke the silence of the farm.

Arthur slipped the headphones down around his neck and stood up. He walked slowly to the small gap in the barn doors and looked out into the blinding sunlight of the driveway.

A dark green Dodge Power Wagon—a heavy, four-wheel-drive military truck with civilian license plates—had pulled up to his gate. The truck had no markings on the doors, no dealer decals on the tailgate, and its rear cargo bed was covered by a tight, grey canvas tarp held down by nylon ropes.

Two men sat in the cab. The driver remained behind the wheel, his face obscured by the reflection of the sun on the dusty windshield.

"Arthur Pendelton?" the man asked. His voice was flat, dry, and entirely devoid of regional accent—the same cadence Arthur had heard through the atmospheric static twenty-four hours before.

"That's me," Arthur said, stopping ten feet from the visitor. "You lost?"

"No," the man said, looking past Arthur into the dark interior of the barn, his eyes scanning the workbench, the tall long-wire lead-in, and the glowing orange tubes of the B-17 receiver visible through the door gap. "We're checking for line interference along the rural power grid. The local utility reported some frequency leakage in this section."

He reached into his inner pocket again, but this time he didn't pull out a notebook. He produced a brass card case, snapped it open, and held out a laminated silver card.

"Special Inspector Miller," the man said. "Federal Communications Commission."

Arthur looked at the card. The emblem was real enough—the eagle perched atop a microphone, encircled by thunderbolts. But the lamination was fresh, the edges sharp and unworn, and the man holding it had a faint, distinct scar running along the back of his right hand, from the knuckles to the wrist—the kind of scar left by the sharp jagged edge of a shrapnel fragment.

"Didn't know the FCC used four-wheel-drive Dodge trucks to check power lines," Arthur said quietly.

The inspector’s eyes didn't flicker. "We use whatever the War Assets Administration sells us, Sergeant Pendelton. Now, if you don't mind, I’d like to take a look at your station license and inspect your rig."
