We moved down the slope in silence, our footsteps echoing in the narrow space. The air grew progressively colder, until my thermal regulation systems triggered an internal heater cycle to prevent the synthetic fluids in my joints from thickening.

Every ten meters, the black walls were marked with faint, geometric grooves—similar to those on Artifact 44-B, but on a much larger scale. They were unlit, but as we walked past them, I could feel a low-frequency vibration buzzing in my tooth-enamel and along the neural collar at the base of my skull.

"This wasn't an excavation layer," I said, stopping to run a gloved finger along one of the grooves. "This was a structure."

"A foundation," Vance corrected him, stopping beside me. "Or a tomb. When we first found the edge of this layer, Aris thought it was a temple complex built by the early colonists. But the stratigraphy didn't make sense. The rock layer sitting on top of this structure is two million years old. There weren't any humans in this sector of the galaxy two million years ago. Hell, there weren't many humans using fire back on Earth when these stones were laid down."

"Then who built it?"

"We don't know," Vance said softly, leaning in close to the wall. "We call them the Pre-Dynastic builders, but that's just a fancy academic term for 'we don't have a damn clue.' All we know is that they built things that last longer than continents, and then they vanished without leaving a single fossilized scrap of themselves behind."

He paused, his torch beam stopping on something lying in the middle of the floor fifteen meters ahead.

"Silas," he said, his voice instantly tightening. "Look at the ground."

I moved forward, my gun raised, my eyes narrowed as I relied on basic visual processing. Lying on the smooth black floor was a piece of standard-issue field gear—a broken survey visor, its plastic casing cracked down the center and smeared with fresh blood. Beside it lay a heavy-duty portable data-rig, its screen shattered and its internal processing cores torn out with brutal force.

I stepped past the broken gear, my boots making a dry crunching sound as I stepped on shards of shattered screen glass.

The cavern ahead was immense, its ceiling lost in the high shadows above our heads. In the center of the space stood a massive, monolithic structure—a four-sided obelisk of the same matte-black alloy, reaching forty meters into the gloom. But it wasn't intact. "And someone took it," I said, noticing a fresh series of foot impressions in the fine dust surrounding the base of the pedestal. The prints were sharp, deep, and clearly defined—made by heavy, steel-toed combat boots. The exact type issued to the camp's administrative and security staff.

I leaned down to measure the tread pattern against my internal gear catalog. "Size eleven standard pattern. Heavy heel wear on the left foot. This isn't an alien relic, Dr. Vance. The person who killed Dr. Thorne and cleared this vault was one of your colleagues."

You can't leave Oakhaven-4 without taking the shuttle from the main pad, and the next drop ship isn't scheduled for another three weeks."

"Unless they have access to a short-range launch craft," I said, remembering the inventory discrepancies Vance had mentioned earlier. "Or unless they never intended to leave at all."

A sudden sound echoed through the cavern—a metallic clatter from the dark gallery behind the central obelisk, followed by the soft, distinct sound of a power-cell cycling up in a high-energy tool.

"Silas," Vance whispered, stepping behind my shoulder. "We aren't alone down here."

I raised my sidearm, aligning the mechanical sights with the dark gap between the structural pillars. "This is Officer Silas-9, Regional Constabulary," I announced into the cold, empty air of the vault. "Identify yourself immediately and drop any equipment in your possession."

The only response was a low, rising hum that made my neural collar vibrate violently. Then, from the darkness behind the pillars, a thin beam of blue light shot out, hitting the far wall of the cavern with a hiss that turned the solid black alloy into red-hot liquid slag.

"Get down!" I yelled, shoving Vance behind the base of the pedestal as a second beam tore through the air where his head had been a second before.

The hunt wasn't just taking place in the dust of the upper trenches anymore. The past had been weaponized, and whoever was holding the gun knew exactly how to use it.


We crouched behind the thick base of the black obelisk as a third high-energy bolt scorched the smooth floor two meters to our left, filling the chamber with the bitter smell of vaporized silica. My secondary systems were sputtering, overloaded by the raw static thrown off by the weapon.

"That wasn't a standard blaster," Vance hissed, pressing his back against the cool surface of the stone pedestal. "That was a cutting torch from the heavy mining rig in Bay 4. Someone stripped the safety limiters off it."

"A high-output industrial laser," I confirmed, calculating the recharge cycle based on the energy build-up hum. "The duty cycle is four seconds between discharges. The operator must be wearing heavy eye protection, which limits their lateral field of vision in this dark environment."

"So what's the plan, iron-head?" Vance asked, looking at my sidearm. "You going to shoot them with that pop-gun?"

"My service weapon is effective against unarmored targets at fifty meters," I replied plainly. "However, my targeting assistance is offline due to the local electromagnetic interference. I must rely on manual sight alignment."

"In the dark? Against a guy with a thermal cutter?" Vance reached down and unhooked a small, heavy metal canister from his utility belt—a high-density flare used for illuminating deep excavation shafts during night shifts. "When I throw this, don't look at the light. Focus on the shadow behind the pillar."

"Understood," I said, shifting my grip on the sidearm and easing my finger onto the trigger. "On your count, Doctor."

"Three," Vance said, twisting the ignition cap on the flare. "Two... One... Dig!"

He arched his arm and tossed the canister into the open space between the central obelisk and the gallery pillars. The flare ignited with an intense, blinding white burst, illuminating the massive vault in a terrifying split-second of raw clarity.

The white light reflected off a figure standing near the rear access arch—a tall person clad in a heavy grey field suit, wearing an industrial welding helmet with a dark gold visor. In their hands, they held the modified mining torch, its thick power cables running back to an external battery pack strapped to their chest.

The blinding glare caught the operator off guard. They raised a gloved arm to shield their visor, swinging the barrel of the mining laser wildly to the right.

I stepped out from behind the pedestal, leveled my sidearm with both hands, and squeezed the trigger twice.

The heavy kinetic rounds struck the operator’s chest pack with a pair of sharp metallic thuds. The external battery cracked, spraying blue sparks and super-heated chemical propellant across the floor. The operator let out a muffled yell, dropped the heavy cutter, and scrambled back into the dark gallery behind the archway before I could acquire a second line of sight.

"Hit!" Vance shouted, jumping up from the ground.

"The target is wounded or disarmed, but still mobile," I said, advancing toward the gallery arch with my weapon held at low-ready. "Stay behind me, Dr. Vance."

We reached the spot where the operator had been standing. The floor was covered with scorched plastic and chemical residue from the ruptured battery pack, along with a distinct, dark smear of fresh blood trailing off into the narrow access shaft behind the cavern.

Beside the blood trail lay a small, rectangular object that had fallen from the operator’s gear harness during the explosion.

I knelt down and picked it up. It was a high-level administrative keycard, its white plastic surface stained with grease and a streak of wet crimson. I ran my optic sensor over the printed barcode on the corner, using my hardwired offline database to read the encoded identification number.

The result popped up in my line of sight instantly, crisp and clear despite the lingering interference.

"Whose card is it?" Vance asked, leaning over my shoulder, his torch light shining on the blood-stained plastic.

"It belongs to Dr. Evelyn Reed," I said, my voice echoing off the cold black walls of the shaft. "Chief Curator of the Oakhaven Excavation Project."

Vance was quiet for a long moment. He reached out, took the card from my hand, and turned it over in his gloved fingers, staring at the name printed on the back.

"Evelyn?" he whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden, deep exhaustion that had nothing to do with his age or the heavy gravity. "She was with me when we logged Artifact 44-B into the inventory. She was the one who signed the transfer order to move it to Sector 3."

"She had full clearance to all excavation layers," I added, pointing my light down the dark access shaft where the blood trail disappeared into the deep rock. "Including the sealed vault in Sector 9."

"She was Aris's star pupil," Vance said, his eyes fixed on the dark tunnel ahead. "He brought her out here from the university board three years ago. He treated her like a daughter, Silas."

"The physical evidence does not care about personal relationships, Dr. Vance," I said softly, reholstering my weapon and picking up the burnt remains of the mining torch for forensic logging. "It only records what was done, and who was there to do it."

"Then let's go find her," Vance said, his face setting into a hard, grim mask as he stepped past me into the dark shaft. "Because if she killed Aris for that piece of junk, she's going to answer to me before your constabulary gets their hands on her."

I followed him into the narrow tunnel, my optical processors slowly recalibrating to the dim light as we pushed deeper into the subterranean core of Oakhaven-4. The air was getting colder, the shadows were growing longer, and the story buried in the dirt was turning out to be far more dangerous than anything I had been manufactured to investigate.
