"Josiah," Silas said.
"Sir?"
"Get two clean plates from the shelf. The thin ones from the German glass shipment. We have live subjects coming up."
"Aye, Mr. Thorne."
Silas walked to the side table where his chemical bottles were arranged in strict order of their density: ether, alcohol, guncotton, cadmium bromide, silver nitrate. He reached past them to the small, unlabelled amber glass jar that contained the dark coal-tar distillate he had received from the Harvard chemist.
The liquid inside was thick, dark, and viscous, catching the morning light with a strange, iridescent green sheen, like the wing of a beetle.
He touched the glass stopper, held it for a moment, then withdrew his hand without opening it.
Not for the living. The living were simple enough to capture—they squirmed, they blinked, they breathed, and their flesh reflected the daylight with a dull, familiar opacity.
He picked up the standard collodion jar, tipped the amber fluid across a polished square of glass, and watched it flow into the corners like clear honey, waiting for the chemical transformation to begin.
