This ancient waterway, often referred to as the "Canal of the Pharaohs," did not directly connect the Mediterranean and the Red Sea as the modern Suez Canal does. Instead, it linked the Nile River with the Red Sea via the Wadi Tumilat, allowing vessels to navigate from the Mediterranean, through the Nile, and then to the Red Sea via a series of lakes, including the Bitter Lakes. The primary purpose of this early canal was to facilitate trade and transport goods between East and West, effectively bypassing some of the overland routes.

These early Pharaonic canals, however, faced significant challenges. They were susceptible to silting, a perpetual problem in the delta region, and their navigability was often dependent on the annual flooding of the Nile. Over time, these waterways would fall into disuse, only to be re-dug or re-purposed by subsequent rulers. The vision, however, never truly faded. The Persian Empire, under Darius the Great, conquered Egypt in 525 BC, and with this conquest came a renewed interest in the canal project. Darius I, ruling from 550 to 486 BC, saw the strategic and economic benefits of a navigable link between the Nile and the Red Sea. He successfully completed or, at the very least, significantly re-dug and improved the canal initiated by Necho II. Darius's achievement is commemorated in the "Suez Inscriptions," a series of five monuments erected in Wadi Tumilat, which explicitly state his intention to connect the Nile to the sea that begins in Persia (the Red Sea). These inscriptions proudly proclaim his success: "ships went from Egypt through this canal to Persia, as I had intended." This version of the canal was reportedly wide enough for two triremes to pass each other with oars extended, and it took approximately four days to traverse.

Following the Persian period, the Ptolemaic dynasty, established by Ptolemy I, a general of Alexander the Great, also recognized the importance of the canal. Ptolemy II Philadelphus, who reigned from 284 to 246 BC, undertook efforts to clear and restore the canal, which had once again fallen into disrepair and become silted up. Ptolemy II is credited with a significant engineering innovation: the introduction of canal locks. These locks helped address the challenge of differing water levels, allowing vessels to pass between the canal and the Red Sea while preventing saltwater from contaminating the Nile. The city of Arsinoe was established at the mouth of the canal on the Gulf of Suez during this period, highlighting the canal's renewed importance for trade with Arabia and beyond.

The canal continued to see periods of use and neglect under subsequent Roman and Islamic rulers. The Roman Emperor Trajan, around 98 AD, undertook another re-digging project, further emphasizing the enduring value of this ancient waterway for trade purposes. However, with the decline of the Roman Empire and subsequent political shifts, the canal once again fell into disuse. By the time of the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 641 AD, it had largely become unnavigable due to silting. Amr ibn al-'As, the commander of the Muslim army, reopened the canal in 641 or 642 AD, renaming it the "Amir El-Mo'menin Canal." This reopened canal facilitated trade and military logistics for a period, connecting the Nile near what is now Cairo to the Red Sea. However, its use was eventually curtailed in 767 AD for strategic reasons, reportedly to cut off supplies to rebellious cities in the Arabian Peninsula, and it was deliberately filled with sand.

For centuries thereafter, the direct water link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea remained a distant memory. Overland routes, though cumbersome, became the primary arteries of trade across Egypt. However, the allure of a direct passage never completely faded from the minds of explorers, merchants, and military strategists. The idea of a man-made shortcut through the Isthmus of Suez continued to simmer, fueled by the ever-present desire for faster and more efficient global trade. The geographical reality of the Isthmus, a relatively narrow strip of land separating two vast bodies of water, ensured that the dream would persist.

One prominent figure who revisited the idea was Napoleon Bonaparte during his Egyptian campaign in the late 18th century. Recognizing the immense strategic and commercial implications, Napoleon tasked his engineers and scientists with surveying the ancient canal's remnants and assessing the feasibility of constructing a new, direct link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. He envisioned a canal that would give France a dominant position in trade with India and the East, effectively challenging British naval supremacy.

Napoleon's engineers, led by Jacques-Marie Le Père, meticulously surveyed the terrain. While they successfully traced the course of the ancient canal from the Red Sea to the Nile, their crucial miscalculation would temporarily derail the grand vision. They erroneously concluded that the Red Sea was significantly higher than the Mediterranean Sea, by as much as 10 meters (or 30 feet). This perceived difference in sea levels led them to believe that constructing a direct, sea-level canal without complex and prohibitively expensive locks would be impossible, and that such a project risked flooding the Nile Delta. This scientific error, though later proven incorrect, effectively put Napoleon's plans for a direct canal on hold.
