The earliest known printed book using woodblock printing, the Diamond Sutra, dates to 868 CE and was discovered in a sealed cave near Dunhuang, China. Woodblock printing facilitated the widespread dissemination of Buddhist texts and other literature, contributing to increased literacy and cultural development. The Jikji, a collection of Buddhist teachings, printed in Korea in 1377, is recognized by UNESCO as the world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type, predating the Gutenberg Bible by 78 years. This Korean innovation in metal movable type casting was more efficient and allowed for scalable publishing, having a considerable impact on government policy and the spread of knowledge.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the journey toward a similar printing revolution was proceeding at a different pace. Before Gutenberg, European monks meticulously copied and decorated manuscripts by hand in scriptoria, a laborious, expensive, and often error-prone process. Writing and reading were largely the preserve of the wealthy and the clergy. Woodblock printing was also present in Europe by the mid-14th century, used for textile patterns and religious images, with block prints appearing in southern Germany and other parts of Central Europe between 1400 and 1450. However, these European woodblocks, often carved in a single piece, were prone to breaking with repeated use, making the process labor-intensive.

The arrival of papermaking in Europe, primarily via Spain in the 12th century through Moorish influence, was another crucial development. Initially, paper coexisted with more traditional materials like parchment and wax tablets. However, the introduction of water-powered mills in the 13th century made paper more affordable and increased production. Paper's increasing availability and affordability were vital preconditions for the printing revolution that was soon to sweep across the continent.
